Warren Buffett, perhaps the best investor in the world . Amazingly, he bought his first share at the age of 11 and became famous for being able to grow his portfolio by 20% per year. And this is much higher compared to the stock market's average return of 10% . Welcome back friends, I'm Nathan, I have a question for you .
Would it be useful for you to see the exact breakdown of Warren Buffett's investment portfolio, one of the world's best investors, and know where he invests ? Well, that's exactly what we're going to do in this video . And for those of you who watch the video until the end, I have a special surprise .
I did some additional analysis and compared Warren Buffett's portfolio to the S&P 500, which represents the entire American stock market, and the results were shocking . I will reveal those results at the end of this video . As always, if you found anything useful in this video , don't forget to click that like button.
It really helps and every like counts . Okay, sit back and relax . It is a division of Warren Buffett's investment firm, Berkshire Hathaway. Look what we're going to see here . Let's compare your money compounding at 20% (which Warren Buffett has managed to do), and the stock market's average return of 10% .
Next, let's analyze the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio . And let's try to find insights that we can learn from . Then let 's end with a comparison between Warren Buffett and an index fund. I did this with three time frames so that we can see how they performed in 2020, over a 5- year period, and over a 10-year period .
And the results were shocking . So let's look at the $50,000 growth . If you put 50,000 in the stock market, and it grew by 10% for 30 years , see what that would look like. So here are a few things to note . After 30 years , you will have about 900,000 . That's a little less than a million. And it will take you 32 years to reach a million .
Now let's compare this to Warren Buffett, who is famous for growing his money by 20% . So if $50,000 grows at 20% for 30 years . There are some key differences. The first is that it only takes 17 years to reach a million . That means he does it twice as fast . And one more thing, you will notice that after 30 years it reaches almost 12 million.
So even though he grows at twice the speed , he ends up with 10 times more money . Maybe that's why he's one of the richest people in the world . So let's take a look at the Oracle of Omaha's portfolio . Here it is, friends, this is the entire portfolio . Warren Buffett 's Berkshire Hathaway portfolio .
You can see that there are some very large investments here and some very small ones, as well as some investments in the form of fractions . In fact, he has 47 different investments here . If we look down, there are some big companies like Apple, Coca-Cola, American Express, but also Amazon, MasterCard, Costco, Barrett Gold .
So you may have seen in some news recently that he has invested in gold. So let's take a look at that too . There are some other energy companies, and if you look further down, there are Johnson and Johnson, Procter and Gamble . Oh, we have some index funds here , Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. But looking at the portfolio like this makes it a little harder to analyze.
So, I think it would be much easier to analyze if we removed all these small investments and kept only the major investments . Okay. What I did was, I removed all the shares that were less than 1% . So, everything below 1% was removed , leaving only his core investments . This is the majority of his portfolio and all small investments have been eliminated .
This makes it much easier to analyze . So what do we have? You can see that the biggest investment of all is in Apple. The next largest investment is a very large one in cash and cash equivalents . Cash equivalents are basically things that can be converted into cash very quickly. Then there's Bank of America and Coca-Cola, and then American Express.
Then there are smaller investments like Kraft Heinz, ratings companies Moody's, and Wells Fargo , then there are U.S. Bancorp, healthcare sector DeVita, Bank of New York, communications company Charter Communications, tech company VeriSign, and JPMorgan Chase. What can we understand from this portfolio ?
This huge investment in Apple seems key to me. When it comes to business , this is called single source dependency. It is very risky to keep such a large portion of your portfolio in one place . Since Apple is doing so well right now, it's a good fit for Warren Buffett . In fact, it has crossed the two trillion mark.
So, this investment is really bringing in a lot of profit for Warren . However, if something happens to Apple , he will face a huge loss . The next important thing is his huge cash reserves. He kept a very large amount of cash in his portfolio . His famous saying is, " Be greedy when others are fearful, and be fearful when others are greedy.
" I think he's probably preparing for a major economic crisis. He has a large amount of money ready to invest during times of major market corrections or crashes , because that is the best way to grow wealth. The next thing is that most of his investments are in the financial services or banking sectors.
Look, he owns Bank of America, American Express, Moody's, US Bank Corp, Bank of New York, JPMorgan Chase, etc. So, it is completely dependent on the financial and banking sectors. Finally, did you notice the news last week that Warren Buffett is buying gold? At that time, he strongly opposed buying gold .
But now they are in favor of it. Can you believe it? However, the name gold does not even appear in that portfolio because it is only a tiny fraction of 1 percent . That's only 0.3 of 1 percent . Since it was a very small investment , it didn't have much of an impact on his portfolio . So, I think Warren Buffett has a lot of physical gold .
If you have physical gold, you do n't need to declare it anywhere. That's why we never know if he has gold or not. But, if he took a stake in a gold mining company , I think he probably has more physical gold than that . Warren Buffett vs. Index Fund. Okay, I'll draw a chart ; In this, we will compare Berkshire Hathaway to the S&P 500, or index fund, which represents the American stock market.
On the left we can see the percentage increase or decrease , and below that we can see the difference from 2020 to date, over a 5-year period, and over a 10-year period. Okay, what is the similarity between them? Berkshire Hathaway is down a little less than 0 percent in 2020. That means it has been in loss so far this year .
The S&P 500 index has just started to gain . So, if you invest in an index fund , it's like having a 1-0 lead . Over a five-year period, Berkshire Hathaway has returned 52% . And what about the S&P 500 ? This provided a return of 71% . So if you had kept your money in an index fund for five years, you would have outperformed Warren Buffett .
With 10 years left, Warren Buffett will definitely excel in the long run, right? Over a 10-year period, Berkshire Hathaway has returned 166% . Very good. If you had put money in an index fund , it would be 215%. Once again, the index fund outperformed Warren Buffett. Did any of these results surprise you ?
That's it, this is the thing. Now you know the full details of the investments of one of the world's top investors. Surprisingly, Warren Buffett is no longer able to outperform an index fund . So, if you invest in an index fund , you are growing your portfolio faster than Warren Buffett . Congratulations to you for that.
You may wonder what the reason for this is. Has Warren Buffett lost his grip? Is he getting old ? I don't think so. I think this is because the size of his portfolio is too large . When managing hundreds of billions of dollars , a 10% loss is a huge amount. Losing 10 billion in a single week is not good.
But if you only have a portfolio of 1,00,000, a 10% loss won't seem like much . Warren is investing so much that only the world's largest companies and banks are safe now .
