Market Veteran Vijay Keria Sharing His Mantra For Investing He Says Knowing The Quality Of The Management Before Investing Is Crucial Also Says Investors Must Have The Appetite For Taking Risk In Fear Of Reaping Rewards Here's A Chat With Nikunj First Memory Starts Way Back I Was 14 Years Of Age So What Was The Time I Really Fell In Love With Stock Market And But Finally That Was In Kita So When I Fell In Love With Stock Market What Do You Mean By That Means Day And Night You Are Thinking About Market I Was Telling My Grandfather That Why Don't You Get Me Admitted Into The Stock Exchange But Since I Was Under 18 So I Was Not Allowed So I Used To Go To A During Diwali And Some Other Festivals I Used To Go To Exchanges In Kolkata With My Grandfather And At Home Also I Used To Trade What You Call Mock Trading With My Grandfather That 500 Ye Liya Ek I took one lakh and sold two lakhs.
My grandfather used to think that he has gone mad. Actually, so that is what I call my first love. The stock market is the road on which we are standing on. It has got, you know, layers and layers of history. The tower of gold by the star, I guess it has seen many booms and many busts and going forward.
Also, there would be a cycle of euphoria and a cycle of depression. So what happened before will happen tomorrow too. But when did you come to Dalal Street? First one, I was 30 years of age after a lot of struggle. So, you had made your debt. One, you came to Dalal Street first. Ok, no, I had only one road, not a road, but it is said that to start your successful career, you need to have a corpus and a capital.
Because if you have to buy shares, you need money. But most of the successful investors, whether it is Rakesh Jhunjhunwala or Weather it is Radha Krishna Damani Vijay KD Just talking about some of the you know l street old street l street successful investors dev had very humble beginnings so how do you first create capital then when did you start taking large bets I just want to understand that what has influenced you what has been your journey know I do not agree to this that you need a large capital to build capital and to make big wealth into the stock market because there are two types of approach either if you are backed by money then it is not necessary that you are going to make money in the stock market you may lose your money also explain that for example suppose if you don't know the tug of the investing then what ever money you have in one burst like in October and September in one such kind of euphoria and the crash all your money can go so which is the First talk to you but the first thing I talked about in investing was Punjab tractor okay and when was that that was back in 1990 1990 and then what happened after nothing I held all the money I had that time ₹ 5000 what ever money I had collected over 10 years I put that money into Punjab tractor and luckily that stock went up by four five times so that was the starting point of my you can call investing career no investors tell me that they got lucky with stock market investing I love tell them that opportunity meets hardwork and then any by say a pry what is the process or for a business's no formula in place of me initially when I started Punjab tractor that time I did not have that much that kind of convey I just I just I was like, the tractor industry is turning around and that was the only reason I talked about Punjab tractors and that time hardly three to four tractor companies were listed in the market so Punjab tractors was one of them so that you can call it luck or by fluke and what ever it happened but after that I started reading about the investing things and unfortunately I did not read any books so far in my life because I am a little impatient and I could read 300 pages books and but I used to watch investors and I used to read their interviews and watch a read magazine and if you like every buddy believe me I am telling you I am every buddy has influenced me so I am the mixture of every buddy including you give me example give me apple of a thought which in a sense is not original thought but thought with you Implemented and it has helped you I tell you I met one of my friend reted to me S P Modi he is in Kolkata so my first lesson actually started with him because I was only inclined to invest in the company with triple A kind of rating you can call it the management so that was the first thing actually I learnt from him and I am following till today in between I definitely have made many mistakes and I invested here and there in bhangar cap I call it but finally immediately when I realise my mistake I come back to the centre point that no the management is the first thing the quality the management the quality of the business the first thing and I still believe that is the only thing that can really help you make wealth into stock market or money can not make wealth for you you have seen in this last crisis company like Manpasand and PC Jalris and there a list of Companies that once there term as good corporate good company but went bust so that is the one thing I think very important is some Punjab factor then what was next then I but ACC so that was my first you can call it moon shot you can call it so wever so called cement a joy during that or that cement thing started but now markets fail how are you able to protect your capital because people lost their shirt I think your cost of purchase is playing a bigger role into this like who ever had entered the market in 2007 and 18 I am sure they must have lost their interest they must have lost right but suppose if you are invested in the market from 2014 and 15 then even after this fall of 30 40 but your capital is still protected so I think that is that is very important now Vijay and I would like to I'm putting this on record just for the benefit of viewers so that they can draw inspiration that you don't often think that the stock market is a place for sharks you need to be extremely qualified you need to understand the essence of finance you need to understand the balance sheet there are two things that are critical but it's not been your experience I mean you got humble beginnings you never went to a little Ivy League college and yet you've made money in the world of finance which is a very complicated place so how do you feel about it that you know here a local lad from Kolkata with very humble beginnings with not a large backing of a business school and yet you made money in capital markets I feel like a courage plays a very important role in creating what ever wealth wealth has no definition right it could be no crore is could be a good Big sum for you and 1000 crore and 10000 crore is also small sum for you it's subjective and comparative but I think courage certainly plays a very important role so since my childhood I would say it could also be gambling or could be gambling but it could be it it could be termed as gambling and it could be high risk and high gain so like usually people term stock market as a gambling no but I think market reverts you as per your perception ok so I think it's a high risk and high gain business so by taking risk into this business you can not create wealth for you one you started in 1980 what was the social acceptance I mean I remember you telling me that when you entered into stock markets your mother told you son share bazaar me mat ja shaadi nahi hogi share bazaar satta walon ka hota hai yaar Massi told you or now I think there is a reasonable amount of respect for stock market and in fact they have a cult following now so from there to now getting invited at you I am in Ahmedabad and various forums it must be a great satisfying feeling right for me it is a good feeling but I don't think that situation has really changed a lot even now new investors they do not have that kind of knowledge about investing they still feel that stock market is a platform to make just money but as I say and I have put it on my stock market is not no you know that good and it's been an interesting journey and it's a free flowing conversation with Vijay Kedia talking about how he creates in the exciting days that he has
