market masters so today in this video on I'll be sharing with you some of the key things that I learned from Warren Buffett and I didn't learn these Warren Buffett directly but you know starting when I was because age like I was age 14 or 15 I learned about Warren Buffett and you know he was the world's best investor and I just wanted to know everything about the guy I started reading books Warren Buffett portfolio there's there's a couple others but the best book for me and I've read it when I was 19 years old the book was called Buffett ology and Buffett ology was written by Mary Buffett she kept the name but I believe she married Warren Buffett's son but then got divorced but she was pretty close to the the family - Buffett and she just very clearly defined how Warren Buffett invests in stocks and I'll be sharing some of these top things would be now in this video so number one if you ever listened to Buffett on YouTube or read about him he says number one invest in what you know and he talks with a circle of competence so if you are a physician and you understand pharmaceutical companies you have an edge you should be investing in pharmaceutical companies okay but that's not my edge my edge I research heavily in consumers the consumer space the technology space and some diversified industries like media companies and I don't go outside of that circle of confidence because I don't want to invest in things I don't know it's it's too stressful and I believe that I can achieve a higher return if I invest in these these these companies and the sectors that I know that I have an edge and I can maybe beat other investors who don't know as much as I do so number two he also says to invest in companies with a competitive advantage and this is huge so first of all you have to start with investing what you know but then the company within that space let's say there's 100 companies in the consumer space he says invest in the companies that have a moat around them so meaning that companies uses coca-cola as an example all the time it's very hard to compete against coca-cola if Warren Buffett gave you 1 billion dollars and said ok here you go compete like with coca-cola and Stephen gets shelf space in the store it's next to impossible people will still be buying coke so that's the second thing invest in companies with a big competitive advantage a big moat it's hard for competitors to have a print penetrate their market share I'm third he always says to invest smart and invest in companies where you're not paying a very high price so you know I tend to defer from this little bit because I look at the future I look at future price to earnings multiples and future growth of companies but Warren Buffett just says don't pay too much so the easiest way to look at this is if you find you know Company A in the stock market don't just look at the stock price okay look at the market capitalization of company a so if company a is you know it's a small company they don't have much market share but hack like their market capitalization is ten billion dollars would you buy that company outright right now on the market for ten billion dollars if not move on and look for a company which is more reasonably priced and I love the users market your example in my mind Netflix where in 2008 now Netflix is is still I believe under 100 billion dollars in market cap whereas Netflix's peers in its group companies like Facebook like Apple they're trading a five hundred billion dollar plus market cap so to me you really have to think about how big is a company if you're to buy the whole thing today would you buy it out at the market cap don't just look at the stock price and then the fourth thing to do is look at companies that will stand the test of time and so it's important again going back to the other point of I can advantage today it might not survive okay so for example researcher motion blackberry it had a great competitive advantage until Apple came in and just destroyed that moat and it took market share away so think about companies that can stand the test of time and that I can be successful I can keep on innovating and and and I can release new products that cater to their current customers and they can actually cater to new customers in the future another tip is to always look at management of a company Warren Buffett jokes that you know he likes companies that any idiot can run companies like Coca Cola people still buy the product you don't really care about management but when you look at some of these smaller companies that are starting out that are growing management is so important it's so crucial you you really need you know these these these key stakeholders who are you know owners of their own shares in the company who have skin in the game and I believe Charlie Munger Buffett's partner called these great managers fanatics you know people who believe in the business so much who are just experts in the industry that can grow this company and then that's more important when you have a small business versus a big company like coca-cola which really anybody can run and another tip the Buffett gives is be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful so when when the stock market faces a crash when there's a systemic crash when sp500 goes you know from its peak and it loses 50 percent i was value we saw that in 2008 that's a time when buffett is buying great quality companies at half price and he becomes more greedy when others around him are selling their stocks and her becoming fearful and the opposite of that is warren buffett kind of puts the brakes on when the market is has gone through a big bull market and when companies are just you know so highly priced he's he's not buying as much into those companies or investing in new companies that at that time but he's very opportunistic when we see a systemic all companies even good companies go down in price I do the same my portfolio I add almost indiscriminately to all of my holdings when the whole stock market goes down and then lastly I would say that Warren Buffett always expounds on you have a long-term mindset you know for building wealth okay so when you invest in all these companies in your in your portfolio don't think that you're gonna you're gonna strike it rich tomorrow you're not gonna strike it rich in a year think like a business owner think for the next five years at least Buffett uses the example he says you know if you're going to invest in these companies in your portfolio just think that the markets gonna close tomorrow and it'll be closed for the next five years will you be happy owning these companies and so it's important when you want to build wealth how this long-term mindset don't be trading in and out of stocks so these are really the the key tips the key things that I've learned from Warren Buffett that I still use today when I invest in my own stock portfolio
