As we welcome in Steven Orr, CEO and founder of Quasar Markets. So glad you are with us. I know we're going to talk a lot about tech and AI, but Steven Orr, this is your chance for a victory lap pertaining to silver. You told me, I think it was a Friday that you said I'm short silver. You were a little early, but then it sold off.
It went up and then it sold off. And then you said, "Now I'm buying silver." And and here's a look at this incredible chart. And you were a little early and then it took off. Tell us a little bit about this silver story and how you made I mean you made at least what 15% on each one of those calls, right?
So I don't know what Thanks for having me Thanks for having me Nicole, absolutely. You know, one of the cool things about this is I've been saying this for a while. The thing that's missing in the markets right now has been common sense. When I was buying silver at $19-20 an ounce, that's when we should be buying it because we had that narrative.
The narrative was that major companies need silver in their products. They need it in their phones. They need it in their as Elon Musk told us, we need it in their batteries, in their products. So silver was definitely underweighted. So when we looked at silver, we looked at the charts, we're like I okay, I love this.
But when it got to about 50-60, I was like, "Wow, it's starting to really pick up. The FOMO's picking up." And that's what happened. When the FOMO picked up, then it ran to over a hundred. And I'm like, "This is absolutely asinine." And when I looked at the downside of it, you're right, I did a little bit early, but I was short the market and I wasn't scared because the one thing that was missing in the market was common sense.
And so when we started to short the market and the leverage that was in the market that we're seeing absolutely came out of it, deflated the market. And right back down it went to about $65 an ounce and I said, "Okay, there's going to be a bounce on this." So we went back and we bought back on silver, jumped up, took that money off, and now I'm sitting on the sidelines because I think silver's about fairly valued now where it should be.
So, thanks. Appreciate that, Nicole. Yeah, a lot of fun to sort of take the ride with you as you were messaging me. Um, you know, it's fun to see how a trader's mind works. Let's talk about AI. How's your mind working on that these days? Again, the same situation. We use Singularity for these major companies like Amazon and Palantir and Apple.
They're all tying the same thing. They're spending CapEx on AI. And when I look at the markets, I look at the future. I don't look at the past. I want to know what they're spending it on. If they're going to spend this kind of cash, where are they going to spend it? And they're spending it on AI. And there's a reason for it.
And I don't want to just understand how much they're spending on it. I want to know where they're spending it on it. And they're saying, "Okay, look, we know that developers, we won't need that many." Dario Amodei of Anthropic CEO said, "Look, we are spending a godly amounts of money on on CapEx onto AI.
Why? And where?" And they're saying, "Look, we want to make developers more efficient." So, you're seeing that now in Amazon and Palantir and of course Nvidia. And all these companies right now are saying, "Look, we're going to spend money right along with you with data centers. We're going to need it in energy." So, energy companies are growing very fast here.
And they're telling you that they're not telling you we're slowing down our spend. They're speeding it up. This morning you saw Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, saying, "Well, guess what? We're going to spend even more on AI." So, I want to buy the pick axes and shovels. And these are the companies that are doing it.
So, I'm very excited about that. And so, I just you know, over the weekend, I thought about that. Over the week, I thought about it. And again, we made a bigger play. And when you saw liquidity come out of these companies yesterday, the big capitulation happened and I bought into those companies, Nvidia, Amazon, Palantir, CoreWeave.
These are companies that are part of the next generation AI. And I want to be part of it. And they took a little bit off and we made a position. And you know, as we go on, and I want to go through some of these names specifically. Um so, tech for the long term. When there is big selling, I mean, for example, um this morning I was talking about how the Nasdaq was down about 4% and we've come up off those lows.
I mean, it's still to the downside for the week, but what an improvement. When you see these kinds of dips, um you know, are you buying? I mean, let's start with a name like Palantir, for example, that came out with some very good earnings, but then the stock sold off. What do you do with a name like Palantir?
Palantir is a very good example of that one. When people ask me about AI, what companies should I be buying? I tell them, what companies are actually being used? And they've got major contracts with the government. I like that and I like I but I didn't like it over, you know, the highs. I liked it when it dipped, and yesterday was a dip.
And for me, it's not just about the government contracts they have, but it's how they're expanding, and they're expanding into healthcare. And we're seeing that now with Pfizer telling you that. Uh Ginkgo Bioworks, I saw that the other day. I was like, wow, that Bioworks company, that's exciting. That are the kind of things that I'm looking at.
And when I'm looking at those companies, where is the spend? They're spending in biotech. So, is Palantir going to be the forefront of that? Yes, because they understand how data works. Massive data sets. Amazon understands that. I love that. So, I love that. And you know what? When I also look at that, I have to look at two things.
The first thing is, how much should I be investing? And why should I invest be investing in that? And the reason I say those two things is, they're saying, we are putting big money into it. And why? Because we see a better production down the road, not just right now. So, I'm not looking for this for the next week or two.
I'm looking at this for the next 3 months, and I expect this to be a nice payoff, as it did the silver. And then, when we think about Nvidia and Amazon, I mean, Amazon, we talked about some of the CapEx spend. Amazon 200 billion, Meta 115 billion, 175 to 85 for Google, Microsoft over 100 billion. When you saw Amazon 200 billion, I mean the CEO Andy Jassy is talking about they're very comfortable with this.
They're aggressively investing in AI. They're confident with their plan. And you see Amazon sell off. Do you buy it? Nvidia's higher after 5 days of selling. Do you like both those names? Yes, right this morning. I like the sell off in Amazon. I thought it was overcooked. I WAS LIKE, "WOW, thanks for the cheap price." Uh yes, I'm long a long about 200 bucks.
I said, "Okay, let's go." Why? Because they're building the enterprise. Major companies don't really know how to handle their AI. They know they got to put it in there. What do I do with it? Well, AWS is right there behind them. The the Google Cloud. I'm like, you know, I love all these companies and they're doing the right thing.
And so when companies don't really understand AI, they have to turn to companies that are building it. And I love that side of it. So AI is definitely in the in the genome of Amazon. And when you look at it from the pickax and shovels, the cloud is right there. So Amazon was a nice pick. And guess what?
On top of that, they're selling the products back to them and they know what their retailers are buying. They have the data on people. So they're winning in both ways. I love this. Well done, Andy Jassy. And I'm got you back. You look at Nvidia. You when you see these companies, they're also going to be the pickax and shovels because it's the computing power.
And Jensen Huang says, "Look, we're right there." And every instruction you see right now, those enterprise companies is still going through Nvidia. So yeah, I'm on that their side, too. So those three companies I love, Palantir, Nvidia, and Amazon. All right. Well, keep them coming. Keep all your hot trades in our news box so we can keep paying attention. Stephen Orr, CEO founder of Quasar Markets. Thank you.
