01. and we do have this turmoil I'm talking about. Usually they dump everything. If you look back at other bear markets, gold and nearly everything collapses at one point. It may not happen this time, but it usually does.

03. Hey everyone, this is Elijah Johnson with SilverDoctors.com for your SD Weekly Metals and Markets wrap. Back with us today is the legendary investor Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings. He's joining us all the way from Singapore. Thank you so much, Jim, for joining us today.

04. I am delighted to be here, Elijah.

05. All right, today is March 30th, 2018. This Monday we saw a historic event: China released oil futures contracts priced in yuan. What is your perspective on this, Jim, and how do you think it could impact the petrodollar?

06. China and other countries are a little tired of being bossed around because of the US dollar. So they're looking to develop competing currencies: Russia, China, and other countries as well. It is a process, and it usually takes a long time. It took many years for the US dollar to replace the pound sterling. It won't happen this year or next year, but it's the beginning of another flaw for the US dollar.

07. Jim, I want to ask you about something you discussed recently in Asia: digital currencies, and the Chinese yuan. Given how much it has moved over the past decade, and the speed and sheer size of it, there's a big camp out there who think it will eventually be devalued at some point. But you mentioned that someday you'd be buying yuan. What factors would you need to see before you actually start buying the yuan and holding your capital in it?

08. Well, I own some now. It's probably my second largest currency holding. It's minuscule compared to my US dollar holdings, but I'm already there. Everything may go down against the dollar when the turmoil comes and the US dollar goes up a lot. Everything will go down against it. I suspect the renminbi will go down less than anything else. When those days come, when currency turmoil comes again, you're going to see a lot of strange gyrations. But I own the renminbi. I don't want to own the euro, I don't want the pound, I don't need more yen, and no Swiss franc. Most currencies are very seriously flawed compared to the renminbi, which also has flaws. But in the meantime, I own it.

09. As we're still on the topic of the US and China, I'm interested in your perspective on the trade war we're seeing right now. Where do you see this going?

10. I should ask you, Elijah. We all should ask, unfortunately. Mr. Trump has no clue. He constantly changes his own mind and his own views. I do see that he keeps gathering more and more people around him who are keen on trade wars, so when things get bad again he's going to come up with another tariff rate or whatever you want to call it. In the end, we're all going to have serious problems. Nobody has ever won a trade war. It's not good for anybody. Everybody who's tried it in the past has learned that, so let's stop this as soon as we can. But unfortunately, Mr. Trump doesn't know history, and the people around him don't either. We should all be worried.

11. Okay, Jim, you often bring up gold. Everybody would like your take on gold. You were definitely involved in the 1970s and in the 1984 market, and this 21st century one, and you've had a lot of commentary out there on the internet about it. Often you talk about how, if this oil thing comes around, you're going to see a lot of gyrations in currencies. The dollar might get stronger, like it did in 2008, for a short term, and we might see a gold sell-off. That would probably be the opportunity. Gold went to a low point in 2015 at around $1,050, almost a 50% retracement, which is what you typically talk about in bull markets: they don't go up in a straight line, they always retrace about 50 percent. $1,050 was the interim low, and late 2015 is the reference point. Do you foresee potentially reaching that again, or possibly going lower if we really get this real turmoil?

12. Elijah, you should ask me. I'm the world's worst market timer. I'm a horrible short-term trader. I expect gold to go under a thousand at which point I hope I'm smart enough to buy a lot of gold before this is over. Gold is going to go up a huge amount. Whenever people lose confidence in governments or currencies, they always buy gold and silver. Maybe they shouldn't, but who cares? They always have and they always will. So I'm looking for another chance. I've never sold any gold. I'm looking for another chance to buy more.

13. If you don't mind, it's a personal question, but what type of gold vehicle do you hold? Bullion, coins?

14. Mainly coins. I do have some futures, but I mainly buy coins because coins are internationally recognizable and easily transportable in a crisis. Let's hope we don't have a crisis, but if we do, you can't really go down to the grocery store with a block of bullion and buy a loaf of bread. God doesn't know if it's real gold, and even if he knows it's gold and wants it, he can't make change. So coins are a much better way to deal with gold.

15. What's your favorite coin? I'm sure you have a preference.

16. I have a few US dollar coins, though. I'll show you one, a sovereign. Very good, because they're a little smaller and they've been around for two or three hundred years, and many people around the world know them. Chinese pandas, gold pandas, are great because in Asia they're very recognized. I own others, but those are probably the three I own the most of.

17. Thank you. Jim, we were talking about how you see gold possibly going under a thousand dollars. What specifically makes you think it will fall further?

18. Well, if I'm right and we do have this turmoil I'm talking about, usually they dump everything. Whether we like it or not, you can sit there all day long and say, look, the fundamentals are great. The margin clerk doesn't care. The margin clerk says, "Mr. Rogers, I can't help you, I've got to sell you out." That happens to people. Whether we like it or not, if you look back at other bear markets, gold and nearly everything collapses at one point. It may not happen this time, but it usually does.

19. Now you mentioned in your talk recently that eventually the governments are all pushing toward digital currencies. How far out in the future do you expect that? For instance, you have a daughter in her adult years. Do you presume it will be mostly digital? Will cash be a novelty thing, something no one even uses?

20. I'm quite sure it's already happening. If you go to China, they don't have cash. I tried to buy an ice cream in China recently and I couldn't. All I had was money, cash, and the vendor could only take "put your card here" or "put your phone here." So I managed to get the ice cream. I wish I'd been buying a Mercedes or something. Cash has almost disappeared in China and other countries in Asia, so it's happening now. It isn't happening in Asia faster than other places, but that's because Asia's ahead of the US in many digital and internet developments. Governments love having money on the internet because cash is expensive. You've got to print it, deal with it, transport it, and so on. So they love internet money, and they have much more control. They can call you up and say, "Jim, you've been drinking too much coffee this month, cut back." They know everything about you when your money's on the internet, and they love that. I don't like it, but governments will follow that in the next crisis that could come about in the banking system.

21. Do you see the United States going that way? There are discussions about it, and negative interest rates are still out there. Right now interest rates have been going up, and the talk is they'll raise more this year. But maybe that's just to clear the room for dropping rates the next time there's a crisis. Is it possible that the US...
