01. did you know that if you invested $1,000 into General Motors 14 years ago you'd have a whopping $1,083 today but if you invested $1,000 into Tesla at that time you'd have $222,700 today

03. so what we're going to do is watch a video of Mary Barra finally praising Tesla and weirdly yet again flip-flopping on their goals for electric vehicles. Today we've got Jeff Lutz with us. He's got a lot to say about GM. Thank you, Jeff, for joining us. Great to be with you.

05. So let's take a look. It's kind of confusing because Mary says things, they make a lot of announcements, and then they backtrack, and then they say different things again. Here's what we're going to show you. This was in July 2022, which is very recent. She says, "GM will sell more EVs than Tesla by mid-decade." Very boastful. She didn't say which decade, that's right, but it's true. She comes back and says, "I do have to give Tesla a lot of credit, because I think they've stayed committed and worked through the years on getting to scale and growing. They've really helped the EV market. There's a lot of OEM competition to Tesla now."

07. The largest seller of electric vehicles in the US is Tesla. How did Tesla get to be such a big manufacturer of these kinds of cars when it started from scratch, and General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler were around for such a long time? Did Elon Musk know something the others didn't, or did the big companies just not take electric vehicles seriously enough?

09. Well, I think General Motors has always taken electric vehicles very seriously. 20-plus years ago we had the EV1, so in a certain sense we were a little ahead of our time from a technology perspective. But we never stopped working on EVs. We had the Volt, the extended-range electric vehicle, and then the Bolt came out in 2015. But I do have to give Tesla a lot of credit, because they stayed committed, worked through the years to get to scale and grow, and I think they've really helped the EV market. Now there's a lot of OEMs, I think, competing with Tesla, so I think it's going to change the dynamics.

11. What are your thoughts on what she just said there? She said they shipped the EV1, it was a compliance car, and then they crushed it, and they didn't want to build any of it. That's kind of symbolic of what they're doing today. They announced a number of different vehicles, and they don't want to build them. They don't want to build a lot of Hummers. The more Hummers they build, the more money they lose. They don't want to build a lot of Cadillac Lyriqs, by the way. A $68,000 Cadillac Lyriq that doesn't have the specs and performance of a $45,000 Model Y. You wonder why it's got 200-plus days of inventory. So they've essentially had a bad strategy for over 10 years.

13. You have to start thinking about the investments that were needed in EVs. The way to think about it is, Tesla did their first joint venture with Panasonic over a decade ago, then built the Nevada factory, which was going in 2015–2016. Here you have GM and Ford. They still don't have their first joint venture factories ramped up, and we're going into 2024. They're not ramped up, they're nowhere near their peak capacity, while Tesla's Nevada factory is running and expanding nonstop. They're decades behind, or at least over a decade behind on investment.

15. Obviously, the interviewer is trying to get a response like "what's going on?" I think Mary's response didn't really get to the heart of what's happened, which is that they've been working on it but haven't been able to produce a solution that's profitable at $40,000 to $50,000 MSRP. Basically, everything they've really designed, put in the lab, developed, and quote-unquote launched or announced for 2023 or 2024 is really debt on arrival. It's not anything they can put on the road. It's one of those things where the more they build, the more money they lose. So they don't have a path, with their current launched products, to even get to a break-even business. That's why they're putting a lid on it right now, trying to contain it, and saying the consumer doesn't really want this as much as they thought. But what the consumer didn't want is EVs that are literally 30 to 50% more expensive than the same or lesser, or better-performing, Teslas they could buy today.

17. So there's a lot wrapped up there. But I think she could be a little more forthcoming. The GM that comes out of this is going to be interesting, because you put a lid on capex, you're not growing, and meanwhile everything else around you is growing, EV adoption included. So what do they come back with? When you come back, you have to re-enter an environment that could be at 15 or 20% adoption. Where are your factories ramped to? Where's your supply base? You've disappointed your suppliers. You told them you wanted this, then you built this, and you stuck them with all their capex and labor and pushed it all back on them. So what are suppliers going to believe about your next demand signal? They're in real trouble right now, and they've really got to get a good product out there, something they can scale and something that will turn into a break-even product at peak scale. I don't think they know how to do it yet. I don't think it's any of the current products they've launched. It's very confusing. The only way to understand why their actions are so different from their words is that the words she uses are really just to prop up the stock, what she thinks investors need to hear.

19. So this is what she said, and this is the news. They're still planning on moving to all-EV sales by 2035. They can't deny this is the future, even though they've recently delayed some EV production. So they're still planning to end gasoline-powered vehicle sales by 2035. "Our plan is to only be selling EVs, light-duty EVs, at that time, but of course we're going to be responsive to where the customer is." Oh, is that the new disclaimer? Yeah, that's the new disclaimer. They haven't done that before. Before, it was "we're switching to EVs, it's happening, EVs are great, invest in GM." Now it's "well, we're going to invest, but we're going to listen to consumers, and if consumers don't want them, we're not going to make as many." That's what they got. And consumers don't want this $68,000 unspecified Lyriq. They want you to figure out how to build something at the cost level of a Model Y that performs better. That's what's happening. They've put this disclaimer in now, and they've made it open-ended. They've introduced hybrids to drive compliance with some of these standards and to get some of these rebates.

21. So in October, they stated they're going to abandon the goal of building 400,000 EVs from 2022 through mid-2024. That delayed production of a pickup truck plant by a year. Then in October, they also scrapped a $5 billion plan to jointly develop affordable EVs with Honda. Now they're lobbying the government. The Biden administration is pursuing aggressive vehicle emissions rules, and Barra said they must be achievable. "I think we're in a good position with the number of EVs we have. We're launching. We just need to make sure the regulations stay aligned with where customers are, and the charging has to be there." So she's already lobbying: "Hey, I don't want the government to push too hard on these regulations." The American Automotive Policy Council, which represents GM, Ford, and Stellantis, in October urged regulators not to raise proposed fuel economy standards so steeply, from 4% to 2% annually for trucks, because it would hurt the truck fleet. They warned these fuel economy fines would cost GM $6.5 billion, Stellantis billions, and Ford $1 billion. This is a big deal. They need to slow down what the government is doing to promote EVs.

23. And you said here, if you listen to the analysts and anchors over the decade, they would have told you Tesla was overvalued and GM was the buy the whole time. Again, this references stock value. Sawyer was the one who pointed out that if you invested $1,000 in GM in 2010, it'd be $1,083, but if you invested $1,000 in Tesla, it'd be $222,000. What I'd want to know is, some of these stats are out there, some are a little opaque, but I've been able to pull it for a couple of years. GM spends about $100 to $200 million a year on ad spend with NBC Universal and CNBC. Basically, every week you're watching CNBC, they're getting a check from General Motors for $2 million. And GM probably spends somewhere between $2.8 and $4 billion a year globally on advertising. And what if they took that money, which Tesla basically spends zero on, and invested it in research for batteries, battery production, lithium refining, or all the other things needed to build an EV future and meet the new standards the government has proposed? Instead, they have these massive lobbying arms. The American Automotive Policy Council is basically a lobbying arm representing the ICE manufacturers. It goes and argues these things and says, "Look, you're going to put these guys out of business if you do these standards." And the government says, "We need a sustainable future, we want a greener future," and you end up with this push and pull. In the end, the automakers are probably going to win. They have tremendous lobbying power and carry a tremendous number of votes with the unions and these lobbying arms, and they'll probably end up pulling the standards down. Meanwhile, you've got a company like Tesla that can meet and exceed all these standards that the government is essentially ignoring.

25. So I think there are a couple of takeaways for me. They could have taken more of that ad spend and converted it into proper R&D to make EVs work, and make them work earlier. And the amount of influence these lobbying arms have on policy is tremendous. That's how hybrids leaked in. That's how you get a 7.5-kilowatt-hour battery on the Jeep, for example, that still qualifies for the full $7,500 IRA credit. These kinds of things have to stop, but they're going to happen at some level or some rate. These are the kinds of things that really influence our lives, all these negotiations in back rooms that influence us as consumers. In the end, GM could have invested differently, performed differently, and gotten different results. Instead, it's basically an influence campaign with policy experts, consultants, and ad spend across the networks. They could have reinvested in R&D. So it's a very different path between a Tesla and a GM or some of these other companies. That's the only path they have available to them now.

27. Sawyer had a nice summary of what happened. Here in July 2022, which is literally last year, just so early: "We will sell more EVs than Tesla by mid-decade." Now, in November, we didn't execute well this year as it relates to demonstrating our EV capabilities. So, year-to-date, Q3 2023 EV sales in the US: Tesla 488,000, GM 56,000. So it's like a tenth. Okay, well, as you said, when she made that claim, she had Nikola on the hook, she had Lordstown Motors on the hook. GM and its board, GM's CEO, its senior staff, Mary Barra, her staff, and the board reviewed those companies and invested in Lordstown and Nikola. Those companies gave them pretty wide-eyed production numbers over the decade. I'm sure Mary and her team said, "Oh, Nikola said this, Lordstown said this, we're going to do this with our own domestic production. We add those together, we're going to pass Tesla." That's the kind of thinking. It's not first principles. I don't know what principles it is, but they didn't do proper due diligence on these companies. Look at how many failures there are: you have Lordstown, you have Nikola, you have Cruise on the autonomy side, which is basically being destroyed as we record this video over the last several weeks. That shows you their decision-making capability. Investors shouldn't have much confidence in this leadership team and board at this point. Right now they're trading near-term profits and stock buybacks, really propping up the stock at the expense of the company's long-term health. All of this fits together with them rejecting the CAFE standards, putting the consultants out, getting all the spin into the media, and continuing that while under the hood, the execution isn't happening.

29. Thank you, Jeff. I love it when you comment on GM because it teaches us a little more about what's happening. Thank you so much, Jeff. Follow him on X, @JeffLutz. Thank you, guys. Bye-bye. Thank you.
