Why not start with one of the most colourful personalities in the market? Yes, I am talking about legendary investor Vijay Kidiya ji, who is not only a legendary investor but also a legendary singer. So today we will have a very special conversation with him. Vijay Bhai, thank you so much for being the first guest in my first podcast today.
First of all, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you Anuj. This is an opportunity for me too, to be the first guest in your first podcast. So, okay, so see, we are calling this my investment journey. So Vijay Bhai, first of all, tell us when did you start your investment journey and how did your investment journey begin?
My investment journey, actually, if you look at it, my journey started when I was 19 years old. I was 19 years old, so before that, I used to do mock trading with my grandfather for three-four years, but if you explain it officially, then my journey started from the age of 19. We should understand how the journey of stock market started, if not then explain a little, how much money did you invest at the age of 19, were you earning it or did you invest that pocket money, how did you invest and did you get this shock, how did you invest in the stock market at that time, I mean 19 years is a very young age, yes, so what it was that I started with trading, with future trading, which we call speculation, so I started accordingly, because I did not have money to invest in something like that, so the atmosphere at home was a bit delicate for this, my father also died early, so the situation was such, so there was something for investment, otherwise only speculation is such a thing, future is such a thing that at that time, which you could do comfortably without any money, even the clearing transaction used to be a transaction of 13-14-15 days, so in between you had time to play and your education was also not very special, so this talk I felt that this is such a job that even a fool, illiterate, illiterate person can do something, can speculate, what is there to buy and sell in it, if he comes then it is fine, and if he goes then it will be seen, so at that time futures trading means badla trading, yes badla trading, but that was a 15 day badla, so there was no M/s etc.
in 15 days that you buy it today and tomorrow you incur a loss, then you have to pay M/s, so did you make money in it or did your money go inside it, in the beginning it is like beginner's luck, so whatever you do, you get money, later I realized that the initial money comes for this, which we call beginner's luck because you have intuitive, your pure feelings, the feelings of your intuition are like this, later I realized like this, so in the beginning when I entered, what about money, even if I got 200, 500, even if I got 50 then There was a lot of such things, there was not much of that either, so in the beginning I came as a beginner, so I started feeling like a king and later I started going, it was a very good journey, I mean there was a time when you are saying that you were struggling financially and today you are counted among the biggest investors in India and your portfolio is so big, so as of today's date, it is a very amazing investment journey, you must be really proud of it, what are you proud of about your investment journey, look, this is work in progress, Anuj Bhai, it is going on, right now there is still a long way to go, so it is okay, we are learning by falling, studying, then getting up, then what do we learn from it, trial and error, from which we learn, the journey caravan is on, it has started, absolutely, so tell me about the journey between speculation and long term investment, when did you feel that no friend, I do not want to speculate, I have to invest and not sit idle, what about that, you faced so many setbacks There were so many situations in my life that it was like there was a time when I had invested money in gambling and it was time to sell my mother's jewellery and think that I have to make the payment.
There was time for the payment but it must have been around 30-35 Hajj. So, yes, it was done and it felt like I had to sell the jewellery. So, okay, my mother said, what will we do now, we will make the payment. There was a time in between that, as I told you, there used to be a 15-day clearing and we would pay it later.
So, I tried to convince God and said, brother, please save me, there will be a lifelong stigma on me because my father got it done and my son got it readied. So, please save me. God, all that was done in two-three days. So, I told God, please save me, I will leave the stock market and go away. I told him this, so coincidentally, the money came within two-three days and I left the market once again.
I must have left for 10-5 days, five days, seven days, but the one who has a calling where If fate pulls you then what is life without you, then I came back to the market, I apologized to God that I will not be able to live without her, then I must have got jewellery made for mother many times more than that, then after that you said, yes that is fine, I have understood that there was a time when I did not have rupees for baby's milk, I did not have money to buy a milk packet, such was the situation during that, I am talking about my period, so I saw such a situation, then after all this then I understood that maybe I should not make it for this, okay at that time I was not firm that 90 % people lose money or 99%, at that time I thought that there is nothing bigger than this, you go to the market at 12:00, do something here and there, come back home at 2 o'clock, it is colorful, so from all these things I understood that maybe this is not made for me, then there I changed my mind a little, that now maybe I should Attention should be paid to investment.
Do you remember your first investment? How did you invest? Research reports and such were scarce at that time. What made you invest? What was the name of the company? What was your thinking when you invested? The investment environment at that time was very fragile. There were n't many investors; there were mostly speculators.
So, no one would even talk about investment. Even if you talked about investment, it felt like you were speaking Greek or Sanskrit. People wouldn't understand what you were saying, and there wasn't anything like a TV interview, or you were learning from someone, or learning on the internet, or a TV channel, or anything else.
Even newspapers did n't have broker reports or anything like that. I remember when magazines used to come out, like Business India Magazine, which is an old magazine, and there were business magazines like this, there used to be advertisements in the back of them saying, " We need a CEO." Or CFO, there was no CEO/CFO in this, there were MD/MD/ Executive Director/Rector, all these terms seemed to have come later, so understand them, they needed people, so they would write that our company has a turnover of 200 crores, we need this person, we will grow by 20% or this will happen for us, then they used to catch hold of it that hey there is growth in this company, or some small thing used to come in the paper, so once in a paper it came about Punjab Tractor, that was my first investment of my life, it got merged later, that company was probably taken over by Mahendra, but it was like Punjab Tractor and in that, there was a small news of seven-eight lines, a small news of seven-eight lines, that tractor industry is getting revived and we are going to do very well, and something like this came, so he thought that whatever money I had, whatever little savings I had, whatever investment of Rs.
35000, I invested all that money in Punjab Tractor, I used to do all the work, I was also into betting. I would like to tell your viewers that I kept failing in betting as well, that all my trades were correct, if I had done 10 trades then maybe seven to eight out of 10 trades, nine or 10 trades would have been correct, but I wanted to make money quickly and that 100, 200, 500 was not going to fill my stomach, so I used to earn money by doing two, four or five trades and invest all that money in one big trade because I wanted to become a millionaire quickly, my money would get exhausted in that, yes, for this I later took a course, I realized and introspected, then a few days ago I took a course that your mental capacity is more important than your financial capacity, your mental state, your capacity is more important, so I learned this by falling, earlier there was no one to teach me, I understood it after reading, so that is my, now now coming to your point, then after studying Punjab Tractor, I invested all the 35000 that I had, okay, so how much did I make then that From your 35000, that 35000 of mine invested in it, it took a year and a half, two years, something in it, but then it increased five to seven times, that was a multi-billionaire, it happened, it gave me a lot of confidence in my life that even if the amount in it was only two to three lakhs, but it told me that yes it works, it can happen, it is possible, money can be made from the stock market, money can be made, that you are like this, yes, so this was the time of my life, then after that you again left betting and after that focused on investment, after that I focused on investment but I could not leave betting, well yes, because this addiction of betting is such that as I have said many times in my words that it is like a drug, it is such a big addiction to betting that even if you leave betting, betting does not leave you, so after that, but what happened, then my focus shifted to investment and then by chance, by destiny, something or the other made me a multi-billionaire I kept getting opportunities in life, but still my pace would slow down a lot.
Because earlier, I would move four steps forward and I would come back four steps, I would reach zero. Now, I would move four steps forward but would come back two steps. That gambling would take me two steps back. That habit of mine remained with me. Of course, the quantity reduced and I reached a comfortable position.
It was such a situation that I had to sell my jewellery. I did not have money for milk. It did not reach such a climax, but it became a comfortable position and I learned stop loss. These two biggest episodes of my life, if this milkman or the person selling my mother's jewellery had not been there in my life, then I probably would not be standing next to you today.
I mean, no matter how big a crisis you face in life, it teaches you something. Vijay Bhai, it is very interesting that you are remembering these instances with a smile. I mean, obviously, when it happened, you must have suffered a lot at that time, but these two things gave you some life lessons. I must have also learned a lesson and now you remember it with a laugh, I mean I find it quite interesting, I feel that I was living in that condition, even in that condition, of course I used to suffer, in the condition I was in, I did not feel that I have to live like this in life, but if it is there then it is there, then I cannot change it, so now when I look back, the lesson that I got from it, as I said, those lessons were so valuable that it was my structure, that is my pillar, today, look at these two episodes, I believe that a child who falls easily, understand that he falls in his childhood, if he falls at the age of six, eight months or one year, then he learns two things, one is the law of gravity, he learns how to stand in his life, if he does not learn it at that time and learns it when he grows up, then his bones and ribs are going to break, he understands this in his childhood and secondly, he learns to stand.
Now how do I want to grow up? You see, even a small child will not lift both his legs together, if he has to get up from the ground, he will place one hand on this table and the other here, then he will lift himself. A six-month-old child will tell you this because he is learning this thing by falling.
So, in my life, as I said, these were the pillars of my life. Even today, there are Gita verses for me. So, when I look back today, it seems that it was a leela, perhaps God was performing a leela, to teach me a lesson. Such a big ordeal happened in my life, so perhaps because of that, I learned and I am standing here.
So, what about that first investment for you? As you said, there was no one to teach you at that time, you learned everything yourself. What were your investment lessons, which are with you till now and which you want retail investors to follow, saying all that, Anuj Bhai, whatever I learned in my life, I have woven all of that in my courts, I have woven it in all my interviews, I have moulded them in all my songs and whatever songs I have written.
All that is my experience, I have shaped it in that, firstly, I understood that money is made in investment, secondly, money is made in the stock market and thirdly, if you hold shares, it is not that even if I hold them for two years, it is not that there would have been ups and downs in two years, brother, there would have been a lot of ups and downs in it, it is not like that, I remember there was a share of 35 or 0, then maybe it would have gone up to 200, 300, 400, whatever, I might have exited early, but in between, there was a big increase, then 10 minus 20, like the movement of shares like Bajaj, so you are not going to be disturbed by all this, if you understand your M, look, one thing I learned, Anuj Bhai, if you are running a 100 meter race, then after going to 90 meters, your focus will be on the next 10 meters, yes, I have to cover that, but if you understand, if you are running a marathon of 32-34 kilometers, then your strength will not be on 100 meters.
It will remain there, then you will break it, then you will run at the same speed, then your target has become bigger that you have to run 32-34 kilometers, so after walking two-four kilometers nothing is going to happen in your mind, but you started with is good as zero, I have understood that this is long term, you have to keep the shares for years, you have to invest in a good company, you have to catch the leader, you have to invest in a significant company in whichever line, so this is for the beginning to learn this
