This week both Nifty and Sussex broke all-time highs. There is celebration in the market with Sussex crossing 85,000 and Nifty also at a new peak. The screen went green everywhere and amidst the glow of the bull market, one thing is missing. This is the same market where a young man started his journey with just ₹5,000 and went on to create a legacy of ₹1,000 crore.
The crowd was panicking. He used to buy it. People used to ignore it. He recognized the opportunity and then an unknown stock of Sata Tea changed the man's fortune forever. Today, amidst the record-breaking market, we have brought for you the entire story of that Big Bull in BISTAK's Success Stories.
Hello, you are watching Bistak. I am with you Anima Dwivedi. It was the day of 27 November 2025 when the names of Nifty and Sussex were once again recorded in golden letters in the history of Indian stock market as both made all-time high records. Sussex crossed ₹85,000 and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who once started with ₹000 in this market, built an empire worth ₹1,000 crore.
This thing came to my mind once again. Today, we are presenting before you the entire journey of India's Big Ball along with every case study in this video. See, RJ i.e. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born on 5 July 1960 in a middle class family of Mumbai. His father was an Income Tax Officer. There were discussions about money and market every day at home.
Rakesh used to track stock prices in newspapers since childhood. Commerce from Sydney M College and then CA, everything was set. In 1985, during his CA finals, he borrowed just ₹5,000 and jumped straight into the stock market. Small step but big dream. The first life-changing story came with Tata Tea.
This is about 1985-86. The market was small. There were fewer investors and most people invested in stocks considered safe. Tata T was a virtually undiscovered stock at that time. No discussion, no high. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's vision was different from others. He listened to the pulse of the business, not just the price.
He saw three big things in Tata Tea. The company's profits were continuously increasing. Cash flow was strong but the share price was stuck. Secondly, the company was expanding its tea business across the country. Growth in the consumption driven sector was assured. Thirdly, the market was not understanding the real value of the FMCG sector.
For Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, this was a truly undervalued opportunity. He bought ₹43,000 shares at ₹1,000 each. The total investment was ₹15,000. In those days, it took courage to bid ₹ lakh on a single stock. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwale had full faith in the analysis and that is what happened. A few months later, Tata's quarterly results came better than expected.
The market woke up and the stock rose sharply from ₹43 to ₹143. 233% return in just 3 months. RJ made ₹7,15,000 by selling the shares. Straight ₹ lakh profit. This was Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's first big break. This is where his confidence was built. This is where his next big claim began. Tata T proved that right research plus undervalued stock plus timing equals to a game changer.
This money later became the engine of powerful companies like Tata Power and SSA Goa. This was the first practical test of his investing philosophy and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala passed it in a top-class manner. After Tata T, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala also placed huge contrarian prices on Tata Power and SSA Goa.
By the late 1980s, his capital base had strengthened. The entire market collapsed in the Harshad Mehta scam of 1992. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala remained absolutely calm. His portfolio fell by 30% during the 2008 global crisis, but he did not panic sell but picked quality stocks and recovered completely by 2012.
He has a famous statement. Bad times are good times for those who keep there up. That means even bad times can become good times if a person sits quietly. His greatest master stroke, Titan. The company struggled in 2002 to 2003. The stock was at ₹30 to ₹40. People were selling. RJ was buying. They made a 5.1% stake at an average of ₹30.
The vision was clear. Indian middle class's jewellery craze and the future of branded gold. Held for 20 years and the magic of compounding was at its peak. Rekha Jhunjhunwala holding Titan worth 16,000 crores in 2024 Returns over 10,000% Today Titan 3 lakh crore down is the crown jewel of the legendary RJ.
His Month By When Others Are Selling. Apart from Titan, Lupan also caught the pharma boom. Cashed in on a full decade of credit ratings by taking early entry into CRISIL. Domino's India Growth Story at Jubilate Food Week. Esk Metro Brands Star Health RJ has an edge in every sector. Portfolio value of Rs 61000 crore by 2024 through Rare Enterprises.
RJ's Strategy Focus on Earnings Growth Ignore the Noise. There were also failures in the journey of RJ i.e. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's Raita. There was a loss of 30% in 2008, people were running away but he survived. Returns doubled in 2012. In 2021, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Rekha and some others settled with SEBI for ₹37 crore in the Aptic insider trading case.
He said he did not accept the crime but just bought peace. RJ believed that money is not made every year. Returns are made in spurts. His last big bet during the period 1989 to 92 and 2003 to 2007 was Akash Air. 40% stake by investing ₹35 million i.e. ₹60 crore in 2021. Vision: Riding on India's aviation boom, a fleet of 72 aircraft in 5 years.
RJ himself arrived on the first flight of 2022 and made his last public appearance there. Today Akasa is the fastest growing airline in the world. RJ's dream is taking flight. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has five golden rules. Please listen to it. Focus on earnings growth. Not on daily price movements. Price after considering the risk reward.
Not gambling, but wisdom. Be patient. Think in decades, not quarters. Be a contrarian. Walk against the crowd. Smart diversification, powerful conviction bets, plus broad safety. In his last interview he said that my worst investment was my health. Invest the most in that. Anand Mahendra also said for him that this advice alone is worth billions that the RJ gave.
RJ passed away on 8 August 2022 due to a heart attack. But his thoughts, his teachings and his world are still alive today. Received Padma Shri in 2023. Today, the Purab portfolio is handled by Rekha Jhunjhunwala. This portfolio is worth more than Rs 61,000 crore. RJ donated 25% of his wealth to philanthropy.
Ashoka University, RJ Shankara Eye Hospital, Rare Foundation lakhs of people are benefiting from this money. He showed the way to crores of retail investors. How to stand out from the crowd [in music] through research, patience and thinking three steps ahead. Starting from ₹5000 to Titan's Peak to Crisis to Aakash's Flight, every story repeats the same formula.
