Electric cars used to be just a statistical error in the oil market. In 2020, they reduced global demand by about 400,000 barrels per day. In 2025, the International Energy Agency estimates this figure at 1.7 million barrels per day, more than four times as much, after more than 20 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in one year.
This is approximately every fourth new car. This shift has continued during what the agency's head, Fatih Birol, has called the biggest oil supply shock in history. At the end of March 2026, Brent crude oil crossed the $111 per barrel mark, reaching its highest level since June 2022. Energy also fueled inflation fears in 2026.
In the September Consumer Price Report, published on October 14, energy prices increased by 20.4% compared to last year. This is important for cryptocurrencies. Inflation fears are pushing interest rates up. Higher rates are sucking out the speculative funds that fuel Bitcoin and Ethereum, and the Federal Reserve raised rates in September for the first time since 2023.
Bitcoin is still about a third below its record of $126,080, and Ethereum is about half way up from its August 2025 high . Katie Wood, founder and CEO of Ark Invest, spent October laying out a very different vision of where inflation is headed next and what that will mean for the dollar, bonds, and Bitcoin.
In this video, we'll break down her arguments piece by piece. What she expects from oil, what she thinks the bond market is pointing to, why she sees the dollar strengthening, and where Bitcoin and Ethereum will end up if she's right. Along the way, we will test her claims against the data, including those aspects that contradict her.
We start in early October on Ark's " In the Know," where Katie responded to a post by hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. Now let's begin. So, let's start with Bill Ekman's tweet. I think he is very interesting. And one of the reasons is that when I first started in this business, I was in college, and it was the late 70s.
But this argument that Bill makes was common back then. And it was based more on the fact that inflation was stuck in double digits. And on this idea that interest costs will continue to rise, fueling the inflation rate. So, it's a vicious circle. We actually think that this time things will unfold very much like the 80s .
And in the 80s, we saw real growth thanks to productivity and lower inflation. And one of the reasons for the decline in inflation was that we were in the era of a certain technological revolution, started by the PC and then by software. This really contributed to some of the disinflationary effects that we saw at the time.
Today we highlight five main innovation platforms. So, it'hm sequencing. These five major technological innovation platforms will help reduce inflation to much lower levels than most people expect. In fact, we would n't be surprised to see deflation, especially if oil prices fall as we expect. Her comparison with the 1980s looks better if it is backed up by numbers.
Consumer inflation in the United States peaked at 14.8% in March 1980. That same December, the Federal Reserve raised its target rate to 19-20%. By mid-1983, inflation was around 2.5%. Very few investors were prepared for this turnaround while it was happening, because the 1970s had trained an entire generation to expect high inflation to last forever.
Now, if you have a clear understanding in the US. It's very easy to use, works on both your phone and computer. Select a coin, determine the direction of movement and set the deal profits or losses. Before opening a position, the system shows the liquidation price based on your account you're done. exchange in the US to offer perpetual crypto futures to US traders.
Perpetual contracts do not have a fixed expiration date, so you can open positions for an increase or decrease in price. Multipliers reach six times in size and amplify both potential profits and losses. You must verify your account and obtain permission for margin trading . Register using the link at the beginning of the description, make a transaction of at least $50, and you will receive $25.
Now let 's get back to the video. One way to test the argument is through productivity, that is, the amount of output produced per hour worked , which the government measures quarterly. In early September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that productivity in the United States increased by 2.2% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year.
This is significantly below market forecasts, but the indicator is moving in the direction required by her theory. The headline inflation rate also tells a narrower story than it seems. Excluding food and energy, the September report showed core prices rising 2.6% year-on-year, compared with 3.7% overall .
Most of the pressure comes from energy carriers. So the real question is whether oil can fall enough to change this picture, and Katie has a specific range. Here are her arguments from the same Arc session. Here you can see the price of oil. And we believe that the price of oil has been overvalued for the last 20-25 years.
Partly because of monetary stimulus, which is the same reason why the price of gold rose. But if we're right, the combination of a disciplined monetary policy that uses a price rule rather than a price of gold, maybe not a price of gold, but a price of gold. And the fact that innovation will indeed significantly reduce global demand for oil.
57% of oil consumption is accounted for by transportation. And we believe that transportation is moving away from gasoline cars and other engines and diesel trucks to electric. And so we believe that oil demand has been in the process of peaking since this transition began. And it has begun in earnest in China and Europe.
The US is catching up. But we believe that the oil price could fall to the $30-35 range . And the reason we say this is because during various crises it has dropped to this range. In fact, during COVID it fell well below this range. And so now it won't be a crisis, it will be a technological shift that will turn it back .
And this will certainly help inflation expectations. The $30 to $35 range sounds extreme after the 2026 oil rally. Therefore, it is useful to remember how low it fell before. On April 20, 2020, during COVID lockdowns, the main US oil contract closed at minus $37.63 per barrel because traders had nowhere to store it.
Long-term data points in the same direction as she does. The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, electric vehicles will displace about 5 million barrels of oil per day , almost three times the 2025 level. China alone accounted for about a million barrels per day of the total last year, with electric vehicles accounting for about 60% of new car sales there.
Why should a Bitcoin owner care about barrels? Because energy was the main driver of inflation figures, which changed expectations for rates in 2026. And expectations about rates have affected the crypto market. If oil stops pushing up overall inflation, one of the main reasons for containing the money supply will begin to disappear.
Oil is one signal , the bond market is sending another, and it has been much less noisy. If you want to push aside the fear and hype and understand , just signals that matter, . To see what bond investors expect in the long term, Katie turned to the gap between long-term and short-term Treasury bonds.
Many of you who have been paying attention or watching “In the Know” know that I was very interested in this graph. I know this is a bit of a geeky topic, but I'm a geek when it comes to economic statistics, particularly the yield curve. I was struck by the fact that during COVID, when the Fed and governments around the world, both fiscally and monetaryly, hit the gas pedal to the floor , all at the same time, we still couldn't get back to that 200-300 basis point steepness of the yield curve.
And I thought, okay, what does that mean? I think that means this latest downturn—we didn't even reach 150 basis points like we did during COVID when the yield curve was steepening. We got to about 75 , and now we're down to the 40s . What does this mean? I really think this means that Treasury bonds are experiencing some deflationary undercurrents.
In other words, the inflation expectations embedded in long-term Treasury bonds—we'll get to that in a moment—are quite moderate and may be getting even lower. This is not exactly what the TIPS inflation rate shows, but we think that's what it's all coming to. Look at the levels behind this gap. On October 9, 10-year Treasury bonds had a yield of 5.24% and 2- year bonds had a yield of 4.80%, according to daily monitoring by Advisor Perspectives.
Long-term yields above 5% typically mean investors are looking for inflation protection, but the additional return from locking up money for 10 years instead of two was only about 44 basis points. This curve also has a recent history of deceiving people. Short-term returns exceeded long-term returns from July 2022 to September 2024— over 2 years, the longest period in history.
Investors, who considered this a guaranteed signal of recession, waited all this time for a downturn that never became an official recession. What matters for cryptocurrencies is where long-term rates will move next . A bond market expecting calmer inflation over the next decade will eventually allow rates to fall, and easier money has helped Bitcoin before.
Its growth from 2020 to the end of 2021 occurred with the Fed's discount rate close to zero. However, there is a nuance to her forecast , and it is related to the dollar. Here's what Katie thinks about the future of the dollar. Here you can see a dollar. This is, uh , another long-term chart, although not as long as the previous one.
But we, we want to pay attention to the early 80s, which you see here in green for the dollar. Back then, we had excellent monetary policy and fiscal policy that was very business-friendly. Many tax breaks and, of course, deregulation. This is similar to the environment we are in today, and while some may argue with that , we believe we currently have a climate that is conducive to business.
And we see that the artificial intelligence revolution, by and large, began in the United States. In fact, one of the statistics I saw on Bloomberg this month is that if you look at all the data center funding in the world, 90% of it—and this is based on fixed income— is in the United States. So I really think what happened with our corporate tax rates, which are now the lowest in the world— we think about 8 % because of accelerated depreciation for new manufacturing capacity, and data centers certainly fall under that.
100% depreciation in the first year of operation. This means that these companies receive huge tax refunds that can be used to further invest in the United States. And we are seeing an investment boom. In the early 1980s, this meant that the return on invested capital in the US was rising relative to the rest of the world, and this is still true today.
And the result was a rise in the dollar. You can see how dramatically he grew then. Well, we're starting on a slightly different level. In the late 1970s, the dollar was undermined by terrible fiscal and monetary policies. So, it all started from a pretty low level and very low expectations. This time you can see the dollar on this basis, which is the DXY index against only six countries.
It is closer to the upper end of recent ranges, but we believe it will continue to rise for the same reason it did in the early 80s. Many of the existing narratives suggest that the dollar is “over” and American exceptionalism is a thing of the past. We disagree with this . I think the statistics I mentioned about data centers suggest the opposite.
And we believe that pressure will increase again due to foreign direct investment and other capital flows flowing into the US thanks to business-friendly policies. The movement in the early 1980s that she points to was huge. The Federal Reserve's dollar index against major currencies rose from 93 in September 1980 to 144 at its peak in February 1985, a gain of about 55%, according to research by Harvard economist Jeffrey Frankel.
It became so strong that the world's largest economies met at the Plaza Hotel in New York on September 22, 1985, and agreed to devalue it. This is what makes crypto investors nervous. Gold, whose price is set in dollars, fell in the first half of the 1980s , while the dollar rose. And in 2022, the dollar index rose above 114 in late September, reaching its highest level in about 20 years.
That same year, Bitcoin fell about 77% from its peak to its low. So, if Katie is right about the dollar strengthening, will Bitcoin go the way of gold in the 1980s? In an interview in Korea in mid-October, she was asked about trading on currency depreciation, one of the most popular arguments for owning Bitcoin.
If it comes to currency depreciation, they both stand to benefit. They are both stores of value. We disagree with the thesis of devaluation when it comes to the dollar. We believe the dollar will continue to rise as returns on invested capital in the U.S. increase relative to returns in the rest of the world due to our deregulation.
This is large-scale deregulation. And our effective corporate tax rate is the lowest in the world—8%. At least until the end of 2028 thanks to accelerated depreciation. So, trading on depreciation—of course, this is a fear of inflation, and in such conditions, gold and Bitcoin will serve as stores of value.
So I think he's right that if people are really worried that monetary policy, referring to Fed Chairman Warsh, is going to fail. I see both can grow. But I think from an emerging markets perspective , Bitcoin and stablecoins work together, because that's where we see the real currency turmoil. Therefore, I think that both stablecoins by volume and Bitcoin by price will be effective as long as emerging markets overcome turbulence.
Part of the answer regarding emerging markets is already reflected in the data. Chainalysis published its 2026 Crypto Geography Report on September 23, placing Brazil at the top of the world in terms of crypto asset adoption, with an estimated $252.5 billion in the 12 months to June 2026 . Stablecoin activity in Brazil increased by approximately 495% over the same period.
Arc has taken this into account in its model. In its “Big Ideas 2026” forecast review published in mid-October, the firm lowered its estimate of Bitcoin’s share of demand as a “safe haven” in emerging markets by 80% as stablecoins take over that role. It also increased the market valuation of Bitcoin as “ digital gold” by 37%, and these two changes roughly cancel each other out.
Arc still predicts that the entire digital asset market will reach around $28 trillion by 2030, with Bitcoin accounting for around 70% of that volume. That works out to almost $1 million per coin. This is where Ethereum comes into play. Stablecoins and tokenized dollars need a network to move, and America's largest bank is choosing Ethereum.
Bloomberg reported on October 19 that JP Morgan is expanding the use of its JPM Coin deposit token on Ethereum for institutional clients after launching on Coinbase’s Base network, which is built on Ethereum, in November 2025. JP Morgan's blockchain division has processed over $4 trillion in transactions and spends an average of about $7 billion per day.
If dollars are going to migrate en masse to blockchain, whether in the form of stablecoins or banking tokens, Ethereum is where the largest institutions are heading. This leaves one big question. What will the crypto market look like if Katie gets the macroeconomics right? Put her theses together , and you get a picture that contradicts the sentiment in the crypto community.
Oil prices are falling due to a technological shift, and inflation is weakening with them. The bond market is already leaning towards this, and the dollar is strengthening because investment is flowing into the US, not because the world is in a panic. In such a world, the Federal Reserve will eventually have room to ease, which is the backdrop against which Bitcoin's 2020–2021 rally took place.
None of this is guaranteed. Katie has been quick to make her loud predictions before. Oil prices remained high for most of 2026, and a strong dollar had previously pressured Bitcoin, as 2022 showed. Ark's projections are also among the most optimistic on Wall Street, so take the $1 million figure as just one scenario.
But this situation is worth understanding. Bitcoin is still about a third below its record, and Ethereum is about half off its peak. If the inflation panic of 2026 turns out to be an oil problem solved by technology, then the assets that fell due to this fear will have the greatest potential for recovery.
Katie's bet is that Bitcoin, along with stablecoins and banking tokens migrating to Ethereum, are built for the world that lies ahead. If you want to keep up with developments, from oil and bond market data to what it means for your Bitcoin and Ethereum, I cover it subscribed. .
