01. my Monday morning started out like any other typical Monday morning I was driving my Model X around with my face plastered on the side and all of a sudden I got hit with a notification from Redditt poverty finance subreddit where this person was lamenting that on his way to the bank to go pay rent he overcame the urge to stop at McDonald's to buy a burger because previously he had a herd of McDonald's at or whatever and thought that sounded really good so we got a burger and then he got into this bad habit of getting a burger every time you went to go pay rent and that was starting to add up because he would literally get a burger every time you went to pay rent and everybody was giving him these positive affirmations Wow great job man awesome you overcame a hard challenge you didn't get the burger and this person's story really upset my trip to whole paycheck where I was trying to clear the shelves because that's what I usually do I clear the shelves and then I leave so I don't have to come back again any time soon but while I was there and that misery inside of me from this person's lack of perspective was growing I realized wait a minute this person is missing something very important oh by the way this is sponsored by Charles F USA and Manny Kings who both got amazing wedged deal after I analyzed their deals and we helped him out use that coupon code 23% off the joint anyway now that that's over let's talk about what's missing this in my opinion is the spend spectrum and no I'm not talking about spectrum internet but I'm talking about something that also has another side to it you'll see the whiteboards bent in half because I'm trying to make the analogy here that this is what people mostly see and they forget about what's on the other side so we're gonna talk about this and we're gonna use this to help us understand why minimalism can be problematic see most of the time when we talk about money people associate themselves or categorize themselves as a being at a certain level of a spent for example you have a lean fire who are the people who are trying to be financially independent and retire early and they spend very little and they plan to retire early and continue spending little money then of course you have fat fire which is spend less now to be financially independent retired early but retire early in a way where you can spend money and enjoy life and then of course the evolution continues you've got penny pinchers everybody knows those people in life the people who don't want to spend money and when they do they pinch every freaking penny these are sometimes known as grinders that is they'll put saving money above preserving relationships then you've got the frugal type who just choose not to spend money so they don't have to worry about grinding people thank you but when they buy stuff obviously there's still couponing and trying to save money much like the thrifty people except the thrifty people they'll spend more they just make sure that every time they do spend they get the best possible deal without kind of ruining relationships then of course you have your spenders the people that they just spend when they need to the people who spend because it's fun to spend money this is where it kind of becomes a little bit of a problem and then you have the extreme spenders who have absolutely no control and they do not need to have a credit card because they will max that crap out right away okay oh and by the way most of the really frugal type I won't tell you this but they might not spend a lot of money on themselves personally but they do spend money on themselves with justifiable business expenses so this is a little bit of a blurry line there okay so be careful with what you see online so most people associate themselves with some position along this spectrum and if I were going to place myself on this spectrum I would probably go ahead and put myself right where this a thrifty option here is it's sort of in the middle I'm not professing to be an extreme saver but when I do spend money I like to make sure I'm getting the best possible deal this isn't to say that any of these extremes is bad but the other side is what's gonna give us a whole lot of clarity when it comes to money success and ultimately happiness now let me first say a lot of people argue that you should be in this sort of lower category of spend and you should save you're way to wealth because it'll actually make you less stressed the problem with this is not having a lot of money tends to create stress and I'll tell you I know stress because I grew up with stress my family grew up paycheck to paycheck and we almost lost our home in 2002 and our family divorced when I was six years old I went through feeling no money I also went through feeling that oh crap I gotta make payroll and I gotta pay my employees stress where I have that feeling of I have so many expenses that I have to work otherwise things will be worse both of these extremes are bad and I've realized that the spend area usually doesn't change your levels of stress to me there's only one thing that changes your levels of stress and this is the same solution that's gonna help that poor poverty finance person that doesn't realize wow dude have you ever heard of banking auto pay or a 49 cent stamp so you could mail your rent and not be tempted by the freaking burger while you're wasting time driving to the bank to pay rent and that's called perspective Gary Vee told me I had one and see that's where we can go ahead and flip the whiteboard and realize there is a wealth spectrum and you could be very very low on the spent spectrum but have a very high net worth let's say you're in the top 10% of people with net worth you could be thrifty and you could be in the top 10% you could be lean fire and you could be in the top 10% you could also be an extreme spender and be in the top 10% you start noticing that it really doesn't necessarily matter where you are within this it doesn't define generally where you will be here because much like a diet if you're trying to save your way to wealth you usually end up failing much like most people on diets the only way you could truly transition is by creating a lifestyle and I'm about to introduce a something that I call the minimalistic a style of investing which comes with four very important principles to help you figure out how to gain wealth which are much more important than figuring out how to get the best deal on a coupon or the best credit-card bonus offer although I do like credit card bonus offers because who doesn't like free stuff but see the real problem for our reddit user is that he might be down here below lien fire because he just has no money to spend at all his wealth might possibly always be in the bottom 5% of people's wealth because the only thing this person is focused on is their spending now obviously it goes without saying that yeah you could probably focus on increasing your income and if you don't have a lot or a decent income forget about building wealth anyway and forget about the spend spectrum but what's more important to me are the four principles of minimalistic investing let's get into those this kind of reminds me of those Samsung foldable phones oh and pause for a moment and take a look at this spent spectrum if you can see yourself moving down this spent spectrum that is saving money and still being happy you should do that because you will then be able to invest more and yes retire earlier however that moved down the spectrum should stop as soon as a misery happens in your life because as soon as you start feeling miserable about saving you will resent investing and you'll actually end up doing it less step number one for living the lifestyle of the minimalistic investor you must invest where you have a competitive advantage ask yourself this why was Warren Buffett so successful he was so successful because he stayed focused on one thing finding companies that a he believed in and B he believed were under market value and then he kept buying and buying and buying those companies he would set a price target and anytime the value of those companies was below that target by he would apply similar principles to what were known as cigar butt stocks as he was taught by Benjamin Graham to find companies that had more value in them than the way the market currently valued them that is investing with a competitive advantage you can find these competitive advantages in anything in my opinion you decide to put the research into whether that's day trading whether that's investing in real estate whether that's buying stocks if you pick one thing and become an expert at one thing the odds are you'll slowly get a slight competitive edge and surprisingly you don't need much of a competitive edge but unfortunately how do most people invest most people invest by saying you know what today I'm gonna day trade tomorrow I'm gonna wholesale real estate the day after that I'm gonna go buy Bitcoin then I'm gonna go trade some free trades on Robin Hood at war Charles Schwab because the trades are free now and people are all over the place and they're like oh yeah yeah I got stock so yeah I know real estate I've done some wholesaling oh yeah yeah I know Bitcoin they're all over the place and what happens is they're good and nothing they don't have no clue what is going on they're good at nothing and they have zero competitive advantage instead it's the people who sit down and realize okay I see potential in this one thing be it real estate be it stocks I'm going to pursue this and learn as much as possible and that I'm really going to get engaged in my style of investing that is step number one because the minimalist doesn't focus on everything the minimalist doesn't get distracted the minimalist narrows down on the one thing that's gonna make the most money for them that's the type of minimalism I like the type of minimalism of old financially minimalist they just just you know what whatever you can do go to chase when you make that check deposit go get yourself that free coffee because you should never pay for coffee over at Starbucks right next door and look I don't blame that I mean I'll go get the free coffee as a well but to live a life only off free coffee is one that isn't very fun when you could be focused on for minimalistic principles of investing instead let's get to the second one step number two you must be able to replicate or repeat what it is you are investing in Warren Buffett didn't get rich buying a one company and then hanging out no you consistently have to be able to repeat the actions that you make and when you focus only on your competitive advantage and you focus solely on repeating what has worked for you yes your diversification might be lower but you know what at least you're making money in my opinion people are so worried about diversification that they take very small amounts of money and try to diversify it and then they end up with very small amounts of money I would rather with small amounts of money have almost no diversification but invest where I have a competitive advantage to keep repeating what I believe in now look for some of you this might be index funds I'm not the biggest fan of a solely investing in index funds because there's also the element of if you're not engaged and it's too boring you might actually forget to invest and forget to be a minimalistic investor see for you to live the lifestyle of an investor you should constantly be thinking to yourself okay if I end up spending less this month I can go through my steps I can go analyze another stock I can go analyze another property I can get to go be an investor again I get to reinvest it's oftentimes the fully automated index fund method that ends up so boring for people that they don't end up regularly investing which in my opinion is worse than choosing your own investments because I know there's a lot of thought and a lot of argumentation a lot of research that'll say oh well if you just give your money to an index fund it'll always do better than you can on your own I personally disagree with that because a like I said I invest more when I invest myself and be I know I can get better deals in real estate because I'm investing we'll have that competitive advantage and you could do that in stocks as well but now let's introduce the third item and the third item is that yes there has to be some degree of automation to what you're doing that is even though I just said be careful having too much automation where every single week you're just depositing money into your index fund and just set it and forget it that's good I do that as well but the type of automation that I prefer is when I take advantage of my competitive advantage when I repeat the process I have automation in the form of principle pay down on my good debt the extreme financial minimalist automates putting money into a high-yield savings account I have my tenants automate my principal pay down and growth over time because I buy in areas with increasing populations it's pretty much also automatic so for the automatic I'm going to put a little asterisk here because you don't want it to be so automatic that it's boring you do want this to be somewhat of a side hustle because just in the effect of having it be a side hustle you will end up investing more you will end up saving more and you will end up spending less because you're engaged only when you are not engaged do you become bored and you generally spend more and then you start cheating on your diet it's kind of like this real irony you become too minimalistic you get bored and then you revert back and your diet fails this is why you need that lifestyle fourth principle whatever it is that you choose to invest in the minimalistic investor says you must choose in something that you have a long-run belief in if you have a long-run belief in Bitcoin invest in Bitcoin if you'll have a long-run belief in gold do it but I probably wouldn't recommend that you invest in things like Libra right now because the long-run trajectory is unknown it's a new it's a gamble and anything that you gamble on is very difficult to repeat now obviously you can stress yourself out by spending like crazy but generally the goal of minimalism is to be in a place of comfort the more wealth you have the more comfort you have therefore it's my strong belief that financial minimalism is big mistake instead you should be a minimalistic investor and forget the little my new Shah the Starbucks the hot dog in the baseball stadium and treat yourself to go into the movies to occasionally going to dinner obviously everything within balance and folks ]
