hey I'm Kevin I never liked gold but my mindset has been shifted because I finally decided to start looking into gold a little bit and enlightening myself about the potential benefits of gold oh and I think I should say this is not sponsored by gold even though this first part seems like a really bad Old Spice commercial let's start with the pros of gold the first pro that I love about gold is the asset protection that it could give you for your emergency fund look a lot of people love putting their emergency fund assigned in a savings account as cash I'm not a big fan of that I prefer to have my emergency fund as investments now that's not to say I'm not gonna have some operating cash around but I don't keep a certain set of funds sitting around in cash somewhere I'd rather have them invested the thing about that is when I use stocks as my emergency fund I always like to keep around twice as much of an emergency fund so if I want an emergency fund of $10,000 I'm gonna keep 20 in stocks so that way if the market plummets 50% I've still got 10k but something that I've really been opening my eyes to is what gold can do for me as my emergency fund see here's the cool thing Gold often does the opposite not always but oftentimes does the opposite of what the stock market is doing so let's say instead of putting $20,000 into stocks you put $10,000 into gold and $10,000 into stocks well at least now you could gain on the updates but worst case scenario an emergency comes around and you've got a really red day in stocks at least there's a good chance your gold is having a green day now this isn't a perfect up-and-down but oftentimes Gold does really well in time stocks are doing poorly and that's often times when your emergency fund is most needed I mean think about it it's an emergency fund right in emergency break glass people look at gold as sort of a protector of value see there are two things that can happen in any kind of country things can become more expensive bread and milk can become more expensive and on the flip side your money can become less valuable people seem to debate this all day long all I can say is historically gold has gone up in value but the interesting thing about gold is it's really a good protector against the fear that we feel inside during rough times and I know it's easy to just cast aside and save basic things like hope just don't be fearful you should be greedy right now if you're feeling fearful just just go spend all your money on stocks and watch them go down another ten percent the next day and like I'm okay doing that like I will dollar-cost average down because I know it's the right thing to do but it's not easy owning some gold and seeing gold go green when stocks are going down and going red that makes you feel good it makes you feel like at least you have this sort of a base protection even if that's only like 5% of your portfolio it's something that can be very powerful in providing you comfort and security especially when times are rough and that value can be priceless sound like a MasterCard ad but sadly gold doesn't come without its downsides no Gold's not radioactive it's just the cool sign okay also I'm gonna be showing off some trades with you in just a moment using the Weeble platform which is your reminder to redeem your two free stocks with Weeble in the link below if you deposit 100 bucks with them you'll find that link right below the coupon for inance course and the sales course see there the big downside for gold is actually dealing with it now if you buy like gold index funds which we'll talk about in a moment this isn't as big of a deal but a lot of people that buy gold they want the actual physical asset because you can't take your index fund with you when the arrival happens like in the Netflix shell Colony so to me a big problem with actual gold becomes practical how do you deal with him where do you store it how do you make sure you don't lose it or somebody doesn't steal it well a big thing that I recommend doing is if you're gonna buy actual gold have it in a safe where you can easily inventory the gold you have and then take that inventory to your insurance and make sure you can get your collectable limits increased so that at least your gold stays protected against things like theft damage vandalism whatever things insurance usually covers but that is a downside storing it and ensuring it takes effort and don't think the safety deposit box at the bank is going to help you out much either because safety deposit boxes at banks aren't insured they're not D I see protected so if somebody happens to do a bank heist that steals all your gold from the safety deposit box well I think that's unlikely it's kind of frustrating to think it's in a bank but it's not FDIC insured like your money is in a bank also if you buy gold on a credit card you usually waive all of the purchase protection return protection and some of the other benefits of actually buying stuff with a credit card then you also have the more generic downsides that we've heard of before like gold's a non-productive asset and it's true I can't rent out my gold much like land for even half off is I can't do anything with it but something else to consider is if you're thinking about taking out debt Gold's usually not the best way to do that now I've considered all of the cons of gold but at least for a little bit I kind of like some of the benefits of maybe having some gold coins around that I didn't have to go mining or maybe some shares of gold index funds so that way at least when most of the portfolio is having a red day and I can convince myself to go shopping for some cheap stocks at least I have a little bit a green showing up in the portfolio so what about actually buying gold well let's just start with what I think is the absolute easiest which is just buying into an index fund for gold you really have two main choices here though I'm sure there are plenty others you have GLD or I a you you could kind of buy these much like you buy into a Vanguard fund I'll show you how we buy some of this because we're gonna put some money into this but the cool thing about ia you over the really popular and long-standing GLD his I use fees are slightly less and when I mean slightly less I mean like a tiny little chip at a rock less then you could actually buy bullion you can buy gold ingots if you like real rich or you can do what most people do and buy like a half ounce or one ounce gold coin remember one ounce of gold is somewhere around $1700 so one one ounce gold coin is 1700 bucks so I'm saying like you got a gold coin and you're safe it's like well there's one month of rent or there's a one month with a mortgage or obviously you could buy in half ounce increments now don't do this and do not sue me bro for even mentioning this but some people have told me that the reason they like to buy gold is because if for whatever reason they happen to get paid in cash in theory they could just go buy gold bullion like buy gold coins throw those gold coins in a safe and pretend they never got the cash aka in case you ain't picking up what I'm putting down people are getting paid in cash they're not paying the IRS their 30 or 40 percent of taxes and they're going buying gold now note that I did not put this in the pros section of gold you should pay your taxes now another thing that you could do is you could put money into actual mining companies like gold mining companies you buy shares of stock in their company the downside of these companies is they don't usually offer very high yield dividends they're like 0.5 percent or 0.8 percent which doesn't surprise me because I mean it's gold mining it's explorative it's expensive and again gold doesn't produce cashflow so I get it the big ones are companies like Newmont Barrick and SS RM and despite being gold mining companies all of these companies lost about 7 to 8% on the crash that happened on march 9th that Monday whereas the gold index funds were slightly up so it's possible that the mining companies operate a bit more like stocks now let's talk about actually buying gold but before we do that I want to hit the different market cycles quickly here in one of the prior videos i made i talked about how stocks have their sort of ups and downs in the market cycle and the cool thing is that real estate tends to have a slightly different bottom gold has to have a little bit more of a cycle that looks like this which is just another cool reason to be into gold as well at least a little bit so that way if you're really at that point where you just went from one bottom to another at least hopefully Gould is doing well you don't be kind of funny is if I somehow attached this danger radiation thing to the pickaxe I don't know that looks good this looks like art I can put this somewhere but anyway now we're actually gonna trade and anytime I trade I always want to just clarify you know don't sue me bro but I want to start with we Bowl here so we've got $2,000 here and I'm gonna hop on over to quick trade on weeble and I'm gonna go for ia you first this is the iShares gold to trust this is that inexpensive one and we're gonna go hit by so what does 70 shares look like that's eleven hundred twenty dollars order confirmation 70 shares I you confirm all right there we go I a you in as an open order I have to say I feel like that was a little anticlimactic that was too easy I just bought into a gold index fund by pushing a few buttons on my phone like that's that's cool but it's also kind of scary because it makes sense how quickly you can also sell at bottom prices alright so I was analyzing some deals this morning and my daily private livestream link below if you want to join those but let's just go ahead and type into Google buy gold there we go the 1 ounce American Eagle oh look you can buy a tenth of an ounce - that's actually kind of cool they let you do that that you could buy a tenth of an ounce for 188 bucks so I guess this is like fractional shares investing for gold so you actually get penalized buying the actual gold coin because you got to pay for them to make the gold coin which makes actual gold less of a deal than buying into the gold index fund but on top of that you also get hammered on capital Dane's because if you have long-term capital gains on gold you usually pay a higher capital gains rate than you would on like dividends or stocks or so that's a little frustrating I have to say the reviews online for these companies are kind of shady so of my top three J and bullion shows us closed at least that location I guess but nothing else ranks and searched for it 8p max shows as kind of bad reviews the other one that I heard was decent was SD bullion but they don't have any Yelp then I go to Trustpilot and on Trustpilot JM bullion has a bad review ap Mex is good like substantially good with a ton of reviews a 4.7 with over 7,600 reviews and they do have the Yelp page as well so it's possible that maybe just that that haters dare I say are on here alright so I have to say I'm very frustrated I thought it would be easy to buy a gold coin I didn't think it would be this confusing to find a company that I could a rely on and B that actually had consistently good reviews that makes me somewhat concerned although I'm sure if I bought through a PM X it would be okay but I'm also not getting any kind of credit card protection because they just want me to put my bank account information on their website and the money's gone dan Dietz god I may as well take that $1,800 pop on over to where I've got some money to invest right now which is chase you invest and let's just literally buy a bit more I a you so let's get more IAU we're gonna do a market purchase here I've got 3,900 in cash available I don't want to put that much in I'm gonna do about another thousand bucks so let's get another 70 shares there we go so now we've got 70 shares that we Bowl where I got my two free stocks I got my 70 shares over here at chases you invest platform let's go ahead and throw this in as a limit order so we'll throw in an order of 1000 $120 here yeah I know that's not $1700 like a gold coin would be so let's just splurge and spend the rest of money on Tesla let's buy I don't know four shares of Tesla hahahaha de dollar cost average down baby and it's God
