today joining us now to discuss that was Caroline Wood senior markets correspondent for the network Caroline maybe to bring us some good news because everything I just said was as as negative as it gets for price I know we've been here before but wed Bush say Dan IES has a no doubt hey there yeah yes Jenny Tesla is Bucking the downtrend today Shares are up about 1.2% right now after falling 15% yesterday uh it's uh really it erased all of its postelection gains with that drop uh down yesterday right now regaining some of those losses but already off earlier highs was up as much as 4% just a bit ago so could be some dip buying after a brutal stretch I mean I think it's important to keep in mind that Tesla Shares are down 24% this month almost 45% year-to date and as you said more than 50% away from the December Peak but there are also are a few positive headlines that could be boosting shares today you mentioned the note out from W Bush's Dan IES he's a known bull he reiterated his outperform rating on Tesla in $550 price Target that's the highest on the street and implies some 130% uh upside but Dan Ives doubled down on his bullishness but with a more cautious tone he said this is the Moment of Truth for Elon Musk as in p as Investor's patience is really wearing thin he said musk isn't reading the room he needs to step up as Tesla CEO at this critical juncture and points out that there's been little to no sign of musk it any Tesla Factory or manufacturing facility in the last 2 months because he's been attached to president Trump's hip and has been at maralago or the White House and uh he really thinks that it's time for musk to step up he says if musk continues to head down the Doge path 110% showing no attention to Tesla during this turbulent time then brand damage will become more pervasive as of right now our work in the field shows less than 5% so very contained of Tesla owners with second guess buying a Tesla again due to Musk that said I have seen other analysts point out that they think that people might think twice about buying a Tesla not just based on their opinions about Elon Musk but based on the fact that we are seeing Teslas get vandalized keyed set on fire because of distaste for uh Elon Musk Dan IES says we've been here before with musk many time over the LA times over the last decade and he ultimately stepped up for Tesla's shareholders so he's hanging his hat on the bull case and that bull case has much less to do with the softening fundamentals and much more to do with uh FSD uh due to be unveiled in Austin in June he does point to the lower cost the sub $35,000 new model before the summer he thinks that other automakers will use Tesla technology in terms of FSD so hangs his head on that in terms of bullishness he says we believe autonomous and Optimus will represent 90% of the valuation of the Tesla story over the next few years so very much sticking with his bullishness but with a more cautious tone we also saw Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas who's been a longtime Tesla bull as well reiterated an overweight rating saying we see the pullback as a buying opportunity for an an embodied AI compounder so has that overweight rating top designation pick on the stock and $430 price Target so that implies the stock can uh regain about 90 plus% or gain about 90 plus per.

said the stock could go as low as $200 a share though in terms of a barcase or as high as $800 a share in terms of the bull cast case but really looking at the the Austin debut of FSD and also um aiot humanoid day before the end of the year as reasons for bullishness so some positive analyst commentary and then we also have the fact that uh president Trump was out on Truth social last night touting Elon Musk as being a great American and saying that he's buying a a a Tesla he said it was going to be this morning so we'll have to look for any updates there but he said Elon Musk is putting it on theine in order to help our nation he's doing a fantastic job and as a vote of confidence he's going to buy a Tesla not sure how much that's actually helping give shares a boost and keep in mind the Trump Administration has paused $3 billion marked for EV charging uh in terms of infrastructure so won't necessarily help president Trump if he's trying to charge his Tesla but uh you know just another headline to consider you know I know this is mostly about Tesla Caroline but you click over to rivan you don't see a bid there you look at a name like Lucid you don't see a bid there so it's at least in terms of the the stock prices what is potentially Tesla's to lose is it being reflected as something to win uh somewhere else and I wonder if this is just some of that valuation coming out of the market after that massive massive move that we had saw post election well and it could be but I think also the bullishness isn't around the core really EV component of Tesla and I think that you know when you hear these the or see these notes written from Adam Jonas or Dan IES it's much less about the fundamentals in terms of the declining sales that we've been seeing both here in the US and abroad the stiff competition that China is presenting the the possibility of China tariffs also Weighing on sales I mean Street numbers for Tesla for 2025 continue to come down when it comes to EV sales so I think that it's not so much bullishness around uh EVS really picking up steam obviously that's something that you know you have to contend with when you're an EV company but it seems like a lot of the bullishness is um around you know the the FSD the and and obviously the proximity to the Trump Administration in terms of getting approvals there I will say it hasn't all been positive either yesterday we did have UBS reiter an a reiterating a cell rating in a $225 price Target so 50 cents away from where Tesla's currently trading after these steep declines and then we also had Bank of America uh maintain a neutral rating under $380 price Target but what point out that new vehicle sales plummeted 50% in Europe in January from a year earlier partly growing to uh partly attributing that to distaste for the brand so not just this uh Eevee slowdown uh because they actually point out that new vehicle sales uh EV sales were higher and Tesla sales were lower so uh they say that some of it's due to distaste some of it's due to customers waiting for the model y to be updated but um you know certainly differing news here and and we've seen that quite a bit with Tesla in terms of uh the analyst's commentary it's always been pretty split still 48% of analyst though so technically the majority uh when you look at the rest of the breakdown rated as a buy uh and then about 22% rated as a sell 30% hold okay but I do know that that whole that cautious Camp has has grown because we were I think I believe we're upwards of 60 or maybe upwards of 50% just a few months ago so it goes to show the way the tone shift it always feels so Stark with Tesla it's like everyone's a believer until they're not and then the Believers come back it's it's always interesting to me how there's very very much it seems like those fair weather fans of Tesla but great insight and I think a great look at Tesla here is there is so much right now impacting the stock it's not just a Tesla story it is as we've been saying an Elon Musk story this year whether we all want it to be or not but appreciate it Caroline Woods a senior markets correspondent for the network
