what's up everybody welcome to meet captain report number six today we are going to talk about the phrase investing does not make you rich and if you've heard that phrase before you might be wondering well then how did scotty Kilmer make his wealth before the success he's had on YouTube where he now has over 2 million subscribers if you have not yet heard about scotty Kilmer go check them out for some humorous mechanic videos even if you're not that into cars I still watch them but just make sure to hit the bell on my channel like you will on his remember to ring that Bell so here's the outline for today's video we're gonna talk about the concept that investing does not make you rich thanks to a youtube video here basically saying that savings is what's going to make you rich we're gonna look at that and then we're gonna look at what Scotty Kilmer did how it relates to that and then we're gonna talk about how Grant Cardone Slams Scotty Kilmer's belief for investing and building wealth so let's get right into it folks we have a video here that plain bagel made that said investing will not make you rich probably investments don't make anyone rich and when I first watched the video I applauded it because I thought wow we actually have a youtuber referencing studies and data that's really cool that is the kind of person I am with like the New York Times with a Wall Street Journal sitting on my desk or The Economist I like data there was a survey done by spectrum group and it's mostly so that I could try to digest it and share it with y'all so what did I do I went right to the source I went to the source of that plain bagel used and I wanted to find out okay well what's really going on here and that's where I discovered aha the spectrum group studies wealth for multiple different groups of people depending on the wealth they have now the conclusions plain bagel made where he said investing doesn't make you rich savings make you rich were very shocking to me because I don't believe that I strongly believe that investing makes you rich that savings kind of keep you poor and one of the highest scoring statements with a average score of 81 point nine eight was the following a dedicated and regular savings program is something consider very important so a lot of these people made their wealth from saving money not from investing so we have a little bit of this initial contention here I'm like hmm what's really going on here how do you have studies to back you up saying that saving is what's probably going to make you rich and that investing is not going to make you rich because well humans are just terrible investors and you need money to invest therefore you're probably not going to invest and well sorry for being a party pooper another party pooper video so then I went to the data and realize aha here's the scoop with the spectrum studies spectrum takes four groups of people and then interviews those four different groups to find out what their habits are for building wealth well plain bagel didn't tell us that he only referenced the group with the smallest wealth out of the categories let's break down the categories here the first category we have is called the mass affluent household this study found that in 2017 there were 31 million mass affluent households with a net worth of between $100,000 and 1 million dollars not including their primary residence aka the place they live so they have a hundred thousand to 1 million in money somewhere whether that's rental property or their IRA which is probably the most common or whatever else then there's the next category which is the number of millionaires that are in the United States which was pegged at nine point nine eight million and these are people with a net worth of between 1 million and 5 million then we have ultra high net worth of individuals who have a net worth of between 5 million and 25 million dollars and this grew to a population of 1.3 million households in the United States then the fourth category is basically all households with a net worth exceeding 25 million dollars and so what was very interesting was plain bagel focused the his entire premise on the poorest people of the bunch now don't get me wrong to be in the poorest group here you still had to have a net worth of $100,000 so I get that but I hate to say it poorest group isn't necessarily what we all want to aspire to be in I don't know that we necessarily want to aspire to have a net worth of between a hundred thousand and a million I think most of us want to you know when we're older have a net worth exceeding a million dollars now here's the most important point see plain bagel says hey you know what these people that have between a net worth of a hundred thousand 1 million dollars they really value savings in fact eighty one point nine percent of them believe a dedicated and regular savings plan is something they consider very important when I actually looked at the data I and I realized that the poorest group keep in mind the people that are the poorest group here still have a net worth of between a hundred thousand and a million dollars the poorest group of people put less than 50 percent of their assets into investments this to me was shocking like wait a minute the poorest group with a net worth of between 100k and a million dollars put less than half of their money into investments okay well it sounds like these are probably people that either are not experienced investing like they're kind of doing like the one foot in one foot out approach putting less than half of their money into investments or they're just not educated in real estate investing or stock investing or just don't know how to make more money so it's not a surprise to me that this group of people the poorest group of people here value saving more than investing but look at the difference here when I switch over to the millionaire tab over half of the millionaire tab was invested into well what investable assets not savings in fact 60 percent of the money that millionaires had was money put into investments the very next tab was for the group of people between a net worth of 5 million and 25 million guess what happened with their bar chart you guessed it more money was put into investments 72 percent of their money was put into invest of all assets so my conclusion here is that the wealthier people were at the time being interviewed the more money they actually had in investments which is exactly the opposite of what we were told in playing bagels video investments don't make anyone rich that saving is actually what makes you rich and investing is not and what they found was that most of the highly rated statements all had to do with savings not key investment decisions we as humans are terrible investors I guess the question really boils down to how rich do you want to be do you want to be a hundred K to a million rich or do you want to be a million-plus rich and the higher your goal is the more important it is for you to invest your money and build wealth through investments by being educated and investing for the long run and that brings up our good old pal Scotty Kilmer because we just learned that investing is a crucial part of building a net worth that maybe this this youtuber had a great conclusion from the article that he read and I thought it was a well put together video but to say that most people don't get rich from investing was a little bit of a disservice in my opinion to all of us viewers it's pretty clear that investing is indeed what builds wealth Scotty Kilmer posted a video and said how did I make my money before YouTube and guess what the answer was her salary and the money I made fiction cards went to paying for the house and all that I bought the soul house a man okay that was 40 years ago when people said Oh Scotty you're an idiot you paid eighty thousand dollars for that old beat-up house that was made in World War two and I said let's just see well they were right it still is an old beat-up house but the lot that it's sitting on is worth more than half a million dollars so Scotty Kilmer made his money by investing in real estate despite the fact that people told him hey why are you buying an you know an $80,000 shack from wartime you know that's a piece of crap and then he goes on to say you're right it's still a piece of crap but that piece of crap now sits on land worth 500k not even considering the value of his property so to me it's a very interesting juxtaposition and it goes to show that when you invest your money rather than saving it even if you're on a teacher's salary and on a mechanic's income you can build a sizeable net worth just like Scotty Kilmer did by actually putting your money to work for you rather than just saving it and I think that's why I'm taking the time to make this video talking about how I think wrong it is to say that investing is not going to make you rich because I come on the data itself shows that that is not true we look at somebody as relatable as Scotty Kilmore a mechanic and a teacher can build a massive net worth by investing their money now we're going to move on over to Grant Cardone slam that only delusional people think equity in their house is a form of an asset well folks I'd like to make it very clear here upfront that I think the purpose of buying real estate is to eventually move out of real estate and turn your real estate into a rental property and keep that appreciating asset for the long term reap the tax benefits reap the rent increases and set aside cash flow to manage and maintain the property while building wealth this would now as a rental property turn into a type of investment which what did we learn earlier in the meet Kevin report here we learned that saving is not actually how the richest rich got rich instead it's investing is how wealthy people become rich we saw how Scotty Kilmer built his first amount of wealth well the same thing is true in response to grant cardones argument that equity in your house is not an asset well let's talk about this for a moment let's say you own real estate worth $300,000 and you have a loan on it of $175,000 well the accounting formula tells us that your equity in a property is equal to your asset - your liability which means in this case you have an equity position of $125,000 and based on the accounting formula Grant Cardone is correct this $125,000 is not an asset the asset is actually the property which if the asset go up in value 10% well then your equity position just increased by $30,000 simply by subtracting your debt from $330,000 and resulting with a higher equity position so now why does Grant Cardone say that only delusional people think that this is some kind of usable wealth well that is because grants position and it's not an invalid one is that you should take this equity and put it into invest of all assets such as rental property or stocks or bonds or mutual funds or you know capital funds that invest in real estate so that this money can go to work for you and he's not wrong but there's a little bit of a problem with that by taking out too much of your equity position you remove some major benefits of having an asset with equity let's just touch on those benefits what can you do with equity in any kind of real estate whether it's a 30 unit apartment building or a house or a duplex well there are two main things you could do with equity you could be insulated from the marketplace look if you have a $300,000 house and values fall and for whatever emergency reason you need to sell and free up cash the more of an equity position you have that is the more leftover money there is after you pay off your debts the safer you are and this harkens back to Warren Buffett's margin of safety in addition to that you have the leverage opportunity if you need it that's probably my favorite part of owning real estate and having positive equity in a house you can let's say you have that $300,000 house you have $125,000 of equity because you have a loan on it you could take that $125,000 and go to somebody and say hey would you mind giving me a $50,000 loan I want to go develop an app I want to expand my business I want to go invest in Cardone capital I want to go do something with that money well you can and that is the beauty of having properties with equity is that they give you options they're also a way to insulate yourself from market risk so the more of an equity position you have the more opportunity you have to jump on other investments when it's convenient for you and if the market declines the safer you are because you do have this sort of insulating blanket that is going to cushion the impact of investing and market movements this is why investing and the whole theme of this meet Kevin Report six is that investing is truly what makes you money not necessarily saving because investing while at the same time making money for you by going to work for you with investable assets being the most common way people actually build real wealth investing can also provide you a form of insulated protection in the event there are market declines or you decide you know what I want to take advantage of an opportunity I'm going to draw against my investments and go take advantage of that opportunity and if there's no opportunity what happens in the meantime your money is working for you instead of against you
