Are we in a debt crisis or are we headed for one? Beginning of a very classic late cycle, late big cycle debt crisis. World's famous investor Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, expressed concerns about the American economy, stating that it was entering a risky phase. Speaking at the Bloomberg's Invest Conference in New York, Dalio, a legendary investor, cautioned that the US was heading for a more significant economic challenges due to a debt crisis and an impending balance sheet recession.
Today, Ray Dalio is widely regarded as a finance icon, earning comparison to Steve Jobs for his a formidable yet groundbreak leadership's approach in the world of investing. He specifically highlighted the potential issues of insufficient buyers with the substantial government dab expected to be issued by the US Treasury which plans to issue over $1 trillion in tea bills by the end of 2023.
This move aims to bolster cash reserves following a lastminute agreement to raise the debt ceiling. However, it only worsens the underlying problem. Dalia characterized the current situation as a start of a typical late stage large cycle debt crisis where an excessive amount of debt is being generated and there may not be enough buyers.
He emphasized the critical question of whether sufficient demand would be for the impending surge in treasury bounds. Additionally, Dalia pointed out that political divisions in the United States were contributing to economic risk. He stressed the importance of establishing a robust middle ground in the political system as extremism and polarization were growing in both the Republican and Democratic parties.
He noted that extreme dominance by either side would not be beneficial and highlighted the fragmentation occurring as people relocated due to the difference in value. Looking ahead, Dalio suggested that the economy would face continued challenges because interest rates had reached a level where they were likely to remain stable for some time.
He has previously raised concern about the direction of US economic policies, warning of a potential perfect storm of economic difficulties in late 2022. Dalio has identified three significant concerns in today's investment landscape. the prospect of a civil war in America, escalating tensions with China and a troubling trends of inflation.
Among these worries, he considers the possibility of US hyperinflation as the least concerning scenario. Regarding the US states, Dalio expresses unease about the increasing political polarization, which has led to questioning the fundamental principle of democracy, especially concerning election rules and outcomes.
He stressed that when people prioritize their causes over the stability of the system, it places the entire system in jeopardy. Internal conflict in the US is more dangerous than ever. We're on a brink of a civil war branching from a wealth gaps and differences in political beliefs. These internal conflicts threaten the rule of law and adherence to the constitution.
Being too extremist of either right or left isn't going to do them much favor. If he had his way, Dal would have a bipartisan cabinet. The middle held together against the extremist holds the more preference of Dalu. Dalu was born in 1949 right after the world order came around. He says he has never experienced an internal conflict or issued to this degree in his lifetime.
These conditions bear a striking resemblance to those observed during the period of 1930 to 1945. According to Dalio, throughout his historical studies, he has noticed this recurring pattern. The global landscape is growing increasingly challenging. He says in an interview with Bloomberg that when there isn't a good financial situation and at the same time there is a huge wealth gap, you start to see a rival of populism followed by extremism whether it is left or right.
He says that it is very clear that there's only one outcome that we could bring forward and that is a strong bipartisan middle and if that were the case neither of the extreme sides would be in power. Geographical fragmentation is prevalent today. He says that we can see people move to different areas not just because of taxes but because of different values.
At the end he asked a question can we maintain can we have a strong bipartisan middle or are we going to have that kind of fragmentation second primary concern centers on China economic relationship between the US and China is the most important in the world and China has become the global economic superpower that it is today.
He views both countries as equal in terms of trade, economic output, innovation and military and education power. While China is rapidly becoming a financial power, it still lags behind as a reserve currency and financial center. Dal emphasizes that how gracefully each nation manages its ascent or decline will be of utmost importance.
The rise of great power to be comparable. China and with it Russia and they formed alliances. He says what he calls the axis powers and allies powers which are two sides, two different powers that begin competing. Lastly, value is apprehensive about inflation and the public's limited understanding of the link between monetary policy and currency value.
As the country has spent more than it earned, it is in debt. Now, to finance that, they're selling lots of bonds as IUS to investors. In my opinion, we're at the beginning of a very classic late big cycle debt crisis when you are producing too much debt and also have a shortage of buyers. value said the worse annual deficit the more they have to borrow to survive.
He highlights that the central bank has been actively exercising its influence potentially risking an inflationary spiral due to a chronic US deficit and a loss of confidence among treasury buyer. Recent inflation data lends supports to his concern. Dalio asserted that the US couldn't keep spending and expected to bring down inflation.
He believes that they would not be able to bring an interest rate to a high enough level to give a good return to holders of credit. The government borrowed money from Federal Reserve which prints the money and buys the debt. At the time they sent out more checks than necessary with five times as much money as they would compensate people.
So when these checks are used, when the money is spent, the price of money has increased by 25% or more. So when the amount of money and credit is increased by a lot more than the quantity, we're left with inflation which in turns lead to zero interest rate. Ultimately, Dalia's fear of inflation has prompted him to reconsider cryptocurrencies as alternative assets as he seeks to avoid holding cash and normal US treasury.
Dalio voiced that there are two economic realities people currently faced. The top 40% and the bottom 60% says Dalio. in those at the bottom struggles immensely. It was also found that the bottom 60% has a miserable economy. It has the highest debt rates due to opium and other drug usage, alcohol and suicide being the cause.
But at the same time, the rich have disproportionate wealth in comparison. The top 1% of the rich have a wealth of all of the bottom 90% combined. So we have two existence, two parallel existence that are taking places. He says Dalio suggests that the leader should have an honest conversation with both sides and have thoughtful disagreement.
They need to disagree, take each other's idea into account and then devise a plan so that the situation in the US can be improved. The best action leaders can take is to optimization of the current situation is to recognize the most significant threats lies in the potential of wars and irreconcilable differences both of which can severely harm the global economy adversely affecting the poorest of population.
