inspiring amazing video we cover many fascinating billionaires and leaders in this series and there are very few who are as polymathic wise witty and legendary as Charlie Munger born 5 years before the Great depression Charlie Munger went on to become famous for his investment prowess wisdom wits and for being a credit to civilization although a billionaire in his own right his investing style is that of value investing and the ideas he espoused were being deserving delaying gratification rational decision-making not being stupid and being a credit to civilization all of these ideas he delivered in his witty and irreverent manner unmatched by other billionaires till this day he was on the front cover of Forbes in 1996 he was described by Warren Buffett as the Chief Architect of birkshire Hathaway Warren Buffett was once the world's richest man whom we will cover in a future episode when it comes to worldly wisdom and investing delivered with hutzpah there probably isn't a person with a more solid pedigree than Charlie Munger so we simply could not resist doing a video on him here are eight amazing facts you didn't know about Charlie number one Charlie Munger already discovered worldly wisdom at the age of seven Charlie Munger learned from a very young age that the secret to a long and happy life is simple you don't have a lot of envy and resentment never overspend your income stay cheerful despite of your troubles you connect with reliable people and you do what you're supposed to do at a very young age Charlie Munger already realized that some of the older people were a little bonkers with irrationality Charlie so many of the people who come here um come because they're looking for advice on business or Investments as much as they're looking for just advice on life uh there were a lot of questions today people trying to figure out what the secret to life is to a long and happy life and I just wonder if you were now that is easy because it's so simple what you don't have a lot of envy you don't have a lot of resentment you don't overspend your income you stay cheerful in spite of your troubles you deal with reliable people and you do what you're supposed to do and all these Simple Rules work so well to make your life better and they're so trite how old were you when you figured this out about seven I could tell that some of my older people were a little bonkers I've always been able to recognize when other people were a little bonkers and it helped me because there's so much IR rality in the world and I've been thinking about it for a long time its causes and its preventions and so forth I sure it's helped me and I staying cheerful with because it's the wise thing to do is that so hard and can you be cheerful when you're absolutely mired in deep hatred and resentment of course you can't so why would you take it on number two Charlie munger's loved story with Coca-Cola already started when he was 13 although both Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett famously love their investment in Coca-Cola listen on and watch as the audience listen to Charlie Munger with wrapped attention I'm lucky to have had as much Felicity as I got and I always needed a certain amount of Toleration from the fair sex I started wrong and I never completely fixed myself I should tell this group about you come here as a cult to talk to a cult leader I want to take you back in history you'll see what an inferior person you were you're now trusting when I was in a freshman in Omaha Central High there was a fom family dur my age and she had done off to summer camp in the year before and she met a brown a blonde goddess I Bel to was 13-year-old and I was a skinny underdeveloped whatever and so forth you got to take my blonde god goddess to this dance and so I wanted to impress this blonde goddess and so I pretended to smoke which I didn't and she was wearing a net dress and I set her on fire well I was quick wited I threw Coca-Cola all over it at a due time the fire was out and that's the last I saw the blonde goddess number three Charlie Munger was blind in his left eye after a botched cataract surgery his left eye was excised due to extreme pain he could have blamed the doctor but he didn't when it became obvious in 1978 to Charlie Munger that he would lose his vision to cataracts he underwent what he described as an old-fashioned cataract operation at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles Charlie Munger said a new and better operation had been invented but I didn't pay attention I just went along with a doctor that recommended the old one that he knew how to do the new type of surgery had a complication rate of no more than 2% while the surgery I had had a 5% complication rate the man who did the first operation I won't tell you his name a perfectly nice guy our family eye doctor I made the mistake the fault was mine number four he is zoom Savvy at the age of 99 many people will live a sedentary and passive lifestyle but not Charlie Munger how often does he Zoom with his friends and business associates three times a year a month or a week no at age 99 he zooms at least three times a day way to go Charlie the last year you both had your lives change pretty dramatically from the pandemic Charlie I hear you're you're pretty Adept at Zoom oh I fall in love with zoom how often do you talk to people on Zoom at least three times a day I made a deal in Australia I I think Zoom is here to say it just adds so much convenience well particular 97 getting around but Charlie and I talked a lot obviously it's the pandemic we haven't talked on Zoom yet I mean well but it's not because I was not zoom number five Charlie Munger nearly brought Elon Musk to tears yes Elon Musk one of the most successful entrepreneurs in America and the richest man on earth Charlie Munger told Elon Musk why his car project Tesla would fail and gave his reasons watch on you know there are American Heroes who don't like this idea I was very sad to see that um because those guys are yeah you know those those guys are heroes of mine Elon Musk Tesla CEO said billionaire investor Charlie M once told people at a lunch all the ways Tesla would fail musk was responding to a retweet in which Charlie Munger compared cryptocurrency with venial disease Charlie Munger is the vice chairman of bergi Hathaway and Warren Buffett's right-hand man in reply musk tweeted an anecdote I was at a lunch with manger in 2009 where he told the whole table all the ways Tesla would fail he said made me quite sad but I told him I agreed with all those reasons and that we would probably die but it was worth trying anyway Tesla is currently the world's most valuable car maker with a market capitalization of more than $830 billion at its peak is Charlie Munger right about Tesla the jury is out there number six his most influential Heroes were Benjamin Franklin among the eminent dead and Lee Kuan Yu whose Life overlapped Charlie Munger and Charlie Munger lived his life through emulating his Heroes you found Ben Franklin when how young were you when you first came across what Ben Franklin had done well I think High School yeah and that's when you started modeling yourself after somebody I don't when I started modeling myself after Franklin but certainly tried to model myself a little I like the mixture of of financial life and regular life mhm and I and but I couldn't copy I didn't have any musical ability and so Franklin was he he played four different musical instruments one of which he invented oh this is a lot of musical ability that God simply left out of me well Ben Franklin was a genius if it was a small country but remember he started in absolute poverty his father made soap out of the carcasses of dead anim animals that stank now that is a very low place to start from and he was almost entirely self-educated two or three years of primary school and after that he had to learn all himself well to rise from that kind of a starting position and become by the time he died he was the best inventor in his country the best scientist in this country the best writer in this country the best Diplomat in this country you know thing after thing after thing he was the best there was in the whole United States so he was a very unusual person and he he just got an extremely high IQ and a very kind of py way of talking that made him very useful to his fellow citizens and he kept inventing all these things IM imagine inventing the Franklin stove and bifocal classes and all these things that we use all the time from Matt Mcall and he says first of all he wants to thank you for sharing your wisdom so graciously and generously but he says of the five people are so you most admire could you please name a few so that we might become more familiar with and potentially learn from these individuals well I don't have any one person that I admire I would argue that the greatest governmental leader whose life overlap mine was lean you Singapore and I would argue that he was the one that taught ding CH chaang of China how to fix China the way Singapore fixed it so and so it was a huge achievement so I've seen some remarkable I think the Marshall Plan that my country did after World War II was a marvelous thing and that was credit to the human race my favorite political system in terms of being adapted to its particular circumstances successfully is Singapore I think Singapore is the single most successful governmental system that exists in the world they've taken a small swamp from no to a very creditable place they're doing the Lord's work in a number of very important ways I this is a very unusually successful man it's a very unusually successful history history if you will make a study of the life and work of Lewan Yu you will find one of the most interesting and instructive political stories written in the history of mankind this is better than Athens you will learn a lot that will be useful in your old life study the life and work of leuan youu you're you're going to be flabbergasted number seven he had walked the street crying as a grown-up married man who would have thought Charlie Munger the wisest wittiest of billionaires hero to ions would walk the street crying but he did when his first child Teddy Munger died of cancer the great philosophers of realism are also the great philosophers of of what I call soldiering through if you Soldier through you can get through almost anything and it's your only option you can't bring back the dead you can't cure the dying child you can't do all kinds of things you have to Soldier through and you just somehow you Soldier through if you have to walk through the streets crying for a few hours a day it's part of the soldiering go ahead and cry away but you have to you can't squit you when you can't you can cry all right but you can't quit you've had time in your life when you've done that sure sure I cried all the time when my first child died and but I knew I couldn't change the Fate number eight Charlie Munger did not do any exercise voluntarily that is yes despite Medical Science suggesting that we exercise Charlie Munger did not but exercise he did with his mind but we had a lot of fun doing anything and um you know we play golf together we play ten us together we we did everything together he really fooled me though on he went to to 99.9 years I mean it if You' pick two guys you know he never he he publicly said he never did it a day of exercise except where it was required when he was in the Army he never did a day of voluntary exercise I have but almost no exercise except when the Army Air cor made me do exercise I've done almost no exercise on purpose in my life if I enjoyed the activity like tennis I would exercise but for the first 99 years I've gotten by without doing any exercise at all and you're not planning on changing that anytime soon no no I I'm not changing it thank you for watching please subscribe so that you don't miss another amazing billionaire philosophy video
