Nvidia shares are falling, and investors are asking one important question. Is this a perfect buying opportunity or a warning sign of something much more serious? After October's sharp sell-off, Wall Street columnist Jim Cramer revealed his favorite strategy for buying stocks during a downturn. But there is a nuance that investors should not ignore.
Nvidia shares closed at $221.97 on October 21, down more than 7% from their October 6 peak of $239.24. And at a certain point, the situation looked even worse. On October 16, Nvidia fell more than 10% from its previous high, raising concerns about future spending on artificial intelligence. And now the most interesting thing.
Jim Cramer says he typically waits for a strong stock to pull back 5% to 8% before considering a purchase. And Nvidia just fell into this range. During the October 21 episode of Mad Money, Cramer explained that investors shouldn't automatically chase record-breaking stocks. Instead, he advises watching successful companies and waiting for more attractive entry points.
But he also issued an important warning. A stock drop of more than 8% may indicate deeper problems in the business itself. So is Nvidia just experiencing a normal profit lock-in, or is something more serious going on? Despite the recent downturn, Nvidia's business continues to show impressive growth.
The company reported $96.2 billion in revenue for the second quarter, a whopping 106% year-over- year increase. The data center division alone brought in $89 billion, and Nvidia isn't going to slow down. The company recently announced plans to expand its semiconductor manufacturing capacity in preparation for even greater demand for AI .
But there is one main problem. Many AI companies are spending huge sums of money building data centers, and some of them are heavily reliant on debt. For example, Coreweave reportedly has over $51 billion in total debt, including leasing obligations. This raises a critical question. Can AI companies continue to spend billions on Nvidia chips without putting pressure on their finances?
For now, Jim Cramer is sticking to his long-term forecast for Nvidia. Own them, don't trade them. But investors should still look beyond the share price and understand the risks. So what do you think? Is Nvidia's latest decline a golden opportunity, or could the stock fall even lower?
