a software platform created to prevent inappropriate behavior of AI agents. On Monday, the company also approved an additional $150 billion in share buybacks, the largest such decision in U.S. history. But what does this mean for stocks and for the development of AI? CNBC spoke with renowned tech analyst Dan Ives, partner and senior managing director at Yorkville Ives, to get his thoughts on this record-breaking move.
I think this is a brilliant decision, because if you look back at their last reports, it was just a stunning quarter. And when you look at the share buyback, that's exactly what investors want to see, because it's kind of a tug-of-war between the investments that Stephanie was talking about and the buyback.
They just took advantage of Apple's strategy, and I think it's smart. This only adds confidence, and after all , they are still at the very beginning of the journey. As we said, we're only in the third stage of this AI revolution, and there's only one chip in the world that everyone wants, and that's Nvidia.
Can you explain the balance between reinvestment and returning funds to shareholders, as they obviously believe they can do both. Steph, as a shareholder sitting here, also agrees . Yes, and I think they should, like Scott: they just finished the quarter, and if they just shrugged it off, maybe they wouldn't be doing the buyback.
But, as we said after our inspections in Asia, demand exceeds supply by a ratio of 13 to one. So now it's Nvidia's world and everyone else is just renting space, and I think they're in a position where they can both buy back shares and continue to invest. They are in such a winning position right now, and I think investors continue to underestimate the scale and prospects for the next one to two years.
They're just really, really underestimating where Nvidia will end up. And what about the other news of the day—if I may say so—about the security platform for agents? I think so. See, Jensen doesn't just talk, he acts, because this brings us back to all the safety issues, Dario's essay, the need to slow down.
I think Jensen came right out and said that was the wrong strategy. Safeguards are needed , and now they are actually putting it into practice. But you can't slow down, because no one in the US will slow down, because everyone understands this, and Jensen does it better than anyone else. If the US slows down, China speeds up, and they win.
You install fuses, you don't drive 55 miles per hour in the right lane just like that. Stephanie, do you have a reaction to that other news I just asked Dan Ives about? I reacted very positively to this. I mean, it's monitoring everything. This is exactly what we were hoping for after President Trump and Xi met last week.
We didn't get a lot of details, but I'm sure it was discussed, and I think it's a huge success for the company that they're ahead of the curve. This is absolutely on everyone's mind right now. This is safety. Interestingly, when you look at companies related to cybersecurity, they have grown significantly on this news.
What do you think about this reaction? partnership with them. CrowdStrike and Palo Alto were actually named, as were many other companies. So, I like that they are diversifying different parts of the software to release this product as quickly as possible. Dan, what about the overall mega-cap trade , which has clearly come back in a big way?
Maybe not so much today, Nvidia is showing good movement, but it has definitely been ahead of the rest of the market lately. Well, I think it's because hyperscalers will lead the way as we see AI deal flow accelerating by 25-30% consistently. So the big companies are going to show their strength now, and I think you're going to see just huge profits, not just from Microsoft.
When you look at Alphabet, Amazon and others, and then Meta, right? I mean, Meta fired a warning shot with what they did today, trying to lure talent away from [ __ ]. But also just showing that when you look at the resources that these big tech companies are demonstrating, they will no longer be in the shadows.
And I think it's an arms race. And investors recognize that we are entering an exceptionally strong reporting season ahead of October. So, what do you think about this Meta growth? I know stocks are down over 4 percent today, but the recent rally has been extraordinary. Investors were writing off Zuck and Meta again , weren't they?
I mean, as we said, I think the taxi drivers in New York were bearish on Meta when you think about those earnings reports . I think part of it was that they were spending money like 80s rock stars, and it seemed to everyone that they were spending it just for the sake of spending. Now look at Muse, look what happened.
So, I think this is a real breakthrough for AI, a breakthrough for Meta, and now they're starting to monetize their 3.5 billion user base. Just look at Apple. They may be late, but when you have that kind of user base, they will still continue to dominate. I think investors continue to underestimate Meta and Apple when it comes to investing in AI.
