01. "In which stocks are you currently investing, and how many shares?" "I currently hold 1,640 shares. I'm having trouble with the calculations, so how much is that in total?" "Roughly, hello everyone, this is Jjeon-eop Jubu." " Yes, hello, this is Mr. Boo." "Today, we have invited a long-term investor in US index-tracking ETFs.

02. He is even in a non-homeowner position, living in a rented apartment, yet he invests the majority of his assets in stocks." "We are here to talk about long-term ETF investing with Mr. Boo. While I was doing that, I learned about index-tracking products, and since then, I have been consistently investing in them.

03. I still remember exactly when I started investing. I opened a brokerage account for the first time on January 3, 2019. I began investing by depositing my initial capital and exchanging currency." "I initially invested 100 million won in Korean currency, and since then, I have continued to expand and continue my investments." " Actually, since I was a complete layman when it came to stocks, I did n't even know ETFs existed.

04. So, I only knew the part that investment masters always talked about—that you should invest in blue-chip stocks for the long term." After learning about it, I invested in companies I was familiar with among those with the highest market capitalization at the time, such as Apple, Microsoft, and Visa, as well as Amazon.

05. I studied by buying them little by little. So, you started with individual stocks? Yes, actually, I started investing in individual stocks. Later, I learned about ETFs, and as I studied them, I felt the appeal of being able to gather all the blue-chip companies in the market and invest in them all at once, so I decided to invest in ETFs.

06. Then, regarding the initial amount... From the initial capital entered in 2019 until now, the principal investment accumulated is roughly 623 million won. It seems quite consistent. Since I am a non-homeowner and do not have a large lump sum to pay for a house, as I explained earlier, I have invested as much of my income as possible.

07. Then, since the total investment is around 660 million won, it must have grown significantly. What are the approximate profits and rate of return? As of today, I checked, and the total valuation is about 950 million won. Then... It's probably around 1 billion won. However, this likely reflects the fact that the exchange rate has risen significantly lately, and also includes profits from selling stocks I am not currently investing in, such as Microsoft, Visa, and Apple from the past.

08. So, I estimate that the profit is roughly 300 million won. Then, regarding that 660 million won, in which stocks and in how many shares are you currently investing? Actually, I am investing in all of the Vanguard ETFs I have invested in. I currently hold 1,640 shares. It’s hard to calculate, but looking at the total assets alone, it has an estimated value of about 820 million won.

09. The valuation is in the low $ 320 range. Listening to you, it seems like you are demonstrating the textbook method for long-term investment in US index-tracking ETFs. Among the various investment methods, was there a specific moment that made you decide to invest this way? I do n't think I started investing this way because of a single momentary trigger.

10. Because I didn't know anything, I was afraid of real estate and I was afraid of stocks, but one thing... The first thing that convinced me was that since I had a lump sum of money, I couldn't just leave it sitting there. So I considered studying real estate, but I was a bit intimidated to invest boldly with the capital I had, as the scale is so large.

11. That is why I started investing in stocks, where I could begin with just a few hundred thousand won. As I went through the market fluctuations from 2019, through COVID-19, and up to 2022, I gained experience and learned a lesson: "It is right for me to track stable US indices." Of course, after learning from my investment experiences and looking for an investment that suited my personality, I realized that investing in US indices—often referred to as "establishing a foundation with patience" or "innocence"—fitted my style.

12. From then on, I invested intensively with conviction to build my wealth. You mentioned earlier that your initial seed money was 100 million won. That is actually not a small amount for a prospective investor to invest. How did you manage to accumulate that 100 million won seed? I was in my 20s... I joined the company in the middle of my career, and I worked relentlessly to save money there.

13. I worked for about three years, saving diligently to secure the capital for my startup. I felt that if the pay-to-income ratio went beyond 29:3, it would be psychologically burdensome, so I decided to boldly choose the 29:3 ratio to do my own thing and founded my own business. In fact, I invested all the money I had saved over those three years at the company to start the business.

14. I took on a new challenge starting from scratch, and I think I started saving again about four years later, when it began to yield meaningful results. I mentioned that I made my first investment of 100 million won in January 2019 while continuing the strike, right? Starting in 2018, I gradually started accumulating a lump sum again.

15. That was when I began to think about it. I wondered how I should manage my future earnings. Should I put them into savings accounts? Or should I invest in real estate or stocks? After about a year of deliberation, I finally chose US stocks. And although I said my first investment was 100 million won, actually...

16. I am very timid, so this suits me well. I am also the type of person who cannot handle losses, so even though I had 100 million won in my account, I actually invested by buying in very small increments. I bought very little at a time, as if I were investing 1 to 2 million won every month. While doing so, I observed stock price trends, gained experience on what to do when I went into the red, and also exchanged currency very little at a time.

17. To be honest, since it was my first time investing, I lacked confidence. When I lacked faith in stock investing, I approached it with the mindset of learning; although I had 100 million won in my account, I actually invested little by little, ranging from about 1 to 2 million won every month. I did that for about six months.

18. It is very good. When people start investing for the first time, they often invest all their money without studying, and learn as they lose. Of course, there are those who make a profit, but it is difficult to recover when you suffer a loss. It is hard to review the situation, and you need to calmly look at where you made mistakes, but you tend to waver the moment the losses get big.

19. Especially for beginners, as you advised, even if you have a large lump sum, [you] Dividing your investments like this seems like a very good tip. Listening to you, it seems you went through a process of diligently saving your income and gradually converting it into investment income. I imagine that after initially accumulating your seed money, you struggled with the decision of whether to invest in real estate or stocks.

20. I really agonized over this for a whole year, from 2018 into 2019. I actually did some research, considering the advantages of real estate and stocks, and pondered what methods I could actually implement. Ultimately, the reason I chose stocks was because of these three things: I have never taken out a loan.

21. Actually, I made up my mind to invest in stocks. There are many different ways to invest, but is there a reason why you chose long-term investment and ETFs rather than individual stocks? At first, I did know that I could definitely earn quick profits through trading with frequent transactions. However, I tried a mock investment once, and the results were disastrous when I think about it.

22. At the time, when I was doing mock trading in mid-to-late 2018, the US-China trade dispute broke out. The timing was unfortunate; the dispute was at its peak between October and December. When I first tried it around September, I was winning big. So I thought, " Look at this, if I study just a little more, my investment results will be good." I decided to trade more aggressively, even though long-term investing was still an option.

23. With that mindset, I started the mock trading, but I suffered huge losses within just a month or two. Starting with the US- China trade issue, which erupted alongside interest rate hikes, I practically slid down—it was like a slide at Caribbean Bay. It plummeted so much. Even though it was just mock trading, I couldn't bear to look at the investment screen.

24. So I realized, "I do n't think I can make money through trading." So I thought, "Maybe I should just try collecting blue-chip stocks," and that is how I started.
