okay let's get back to this great interview charlie munger unplugged hosted by MTV no of course not it's the Wall Street Journal but good nonetheless as if MTV was good anymore which it's not but anyway we're gonna talk about everyone's favorite topic that they like to brag to other people about reading but in this case we're gonna go over Charlie Munger's reading routine and he's a billionaire and a very smart guy so it pays to listen to him so they asked him what does your work day look like he says well I have always sought since I quit law practice in 1965 to have a lot of time in every day to read and think read and think I got a stop right there because that is a key portion the think part he's not just reading he's thinking may sound obvious but no no no a lot of people skip the thinking part most don't ever stop to contemplate about what they're reading they're just blowing through it which is really not effective at all it ruins the point of reading and it's not like you need to absorb as much information as possible you're not a computer we have Google to figure out any fact in two milliseconds we don't need you to do that the whole point of reading is to apply it to what you're doing and the application that's where the thinking becomes required because if you're just reading and not applying it well then it's just entertainment right you might as well be watching Netflix but for some reason intellectuals frown on a person watching Netflix four hours a day but read a book any book oh and you're a hero an intellectual hero for me personally it takes me forever to get through a book because if it's actually a good book then it forces me to stop all the time because it'll say something that triggers something and I'll be thinking about it and be like okay how do I apply this it's the difference between an active process of reading and a passive process passive process is you're just reading words active is your reading stopping and thinking and honestly I don't read as much as I probably should because it's exhausting but I know that the reading I do do is worth it because it's tiring me out because more than reading it's like brainstorming with the author got to keep it active and a lot of times I don't even get through a book maybe it's a bad habit but once I have something actionable I drop the book and I go apply it as fast as I can the reading ends and then the action begins that's the whole point right oh and by the way years of reading and thinking is how our team came up with our explosive stocks checklist go check that out it's fre and it's gonna help you cut through all the BS and to the ten factors that actually signal a stock is about to take off just like this little rocking in the background that you could barely see but okay back to Charlie did I hammer this point home enough the thinking hopefully so he says Warren who's Warren Buffett is the same way we both hate to have too many appointments in one day we both have long segments of free time the lives we live would look to anybody else like academics so what Charlie is talking about there is creating space for once again what do you think thinking you don't need to overload your mind with information and busy work you need to give yourself room now thinking and figuring stuff out it's weird it's not always direct now like if you're working on a project and you got to get say a paper done and you literally got to type out the words then yeah you got to focus and execute it's a very specific task right at least the writing part but when it comes to broader strategic things and new ideas you don't just sit there in a chair like this and come up with them and that's because that type of thinking comes from your subconscious brain that's where you're gonna make breakthroughs and it's subconscious because you won't even realize that your brain is working on it oftentimes you'll be in the shower and it'll just pop into your head and you'll be like whoa it's the whole epiphany thing it's not actually just random it's your brain processing another good example of the subconscious brain is when you used to take tests in school or maybe you're still in school if you don't know an answer to a problem you skip that problem go through the rest of the test and come back and oftentimes well not for me because I was stupid but oftentimes you actually have the answer by the time you come back and you're like oh okay now it makes sense and again that's your subconscious thing processing but to let your subconscious brain process you need to give it space which is exactly what Charlie's talking about again don't fill your mind with busy where cuz it's not gonna help for me I try to leave a lot of space where I'm basically doing nothing I'm just putzing around I paced back and forth I spaced out and that's when I get the best ideas and actually pacing is a very genetic thing Indians love pacing you know you put your arm behind your back like this I don't know if you could see it it's like this but behind you you get some nice back support and you just pace back and forth like this I've seen my dad all my uncles all Indian men have been doing it forever wash it in my whole life and they're all smart guys to inventors and stuff so I just naturally started doing it too when I was thinking and there's tons of studies that show that there's a strong link between your brain and walking it's something about the motion of your body at its own pace you're not trying to like keep up on a treadmill or anything that coupled with your mind they each other helps you work out ideas in the physical space around you something some like that you don't need to know why it works but try it and I bet you it's gonna work for you so you got to create mental space and if you want to walk you got to create physical space too ok next part the interviewer is like I'm surprised you even have a computer because they're in a Charlie's house or whatever he's like it's not a computer it's a magnifier I got this table to hold that magnifier so with fading vision I could eventually read a newspaper and so forth the guy doesn't even keep a computer in his office again cutting out the information more thinking how much time do you spend reading in a typical day charlie oh it's huge I read myself to sleep every night I read enormous ly I like doing it not only that what I found very early in life was that once I learned to read and handle elementary math I really didn't need professors or anything I could figure out almost anything I wanted better from the written material than from having some professor tell it to me because he'd be going too fast or too slow or telling me something I already knew or didn't want to know and so of course I like doing it by reading you can look at Andrew Carnegie and Benjamin Franklin they had a few years of primary school and that's it they learned everything by themselves by reading whatever they needed they just learned it's not that hard imagine educating yourself by firelight no lamps no electricity after a day's brutal work our ancestors had it tough that's true we got a lot easier once you know the basics you don't really need a teacher self-directed learning usually works a lot better and this is where Tim Ferriss had a very useful mental model for how you should read he calls it just in time information versus just in case so again this is oriented towards action and thinking if you're trying to pick a subject to read about make sure that it's related to what you need right now where are you at in your business school your job and where do you want to go where is the next level and what book is gonna help you do that that's just in time information because you need it right now you want to focus most of your reading time and energy because you only have so much on that just-in-time information then there's the Justin case information when you're reading like a general business book or something they might come in handy you just learning a new topic that's important too but you know constrict that time because just in case means you know just in case it comes in handy later it's gonna be less actionable so for me like I said I'm a slow reader and I usually don't finish books but the only time I devour a book like in a single day or read a bunch of articles take these courses real quick is when it's something that want to execute on right away and that actually propels me forward a lot faster because I know what I'm trying to get out of it remember always be geared towards action and a big thing I gotta mention about all this reading don't be one of those people who reads non-stop and then brags about it especially on Twitter I'm sure if you're on Twitter you've seen all those posts people listing at the end of the year so December even in January I read 60 books last year this year I'm gonna read 300 first of all no you most likely did not read all those books and even if you did read them if you read that many did you even get anything out of them and then these guys will post their top 5 books and their top 5 books happen to be the most common popular virtue signaling books there are so you read 60 to 100 books and you only have those as your top 5 didn't find anything else interesting there'll be books like sapiens or dahlias principles and again they're just putting it there because it's virtue signaling to the tribe look look I'm smart I'm an intellectual and I know that because I got to Dalio books right there double the virtue signaling and I've seen the comments people commenting like oh you read a Leo people ask me in real life oh did you read a Leo and I'm like not only did I read a Leo but I actually got a stamp of his face on my lower back would you like to lick it ok it's virtue singling man don't do it don't don't be like me with two of the same books stacked under a trophy it is the saddest background in the history of YouTube but the point is if you're always reading and not doing anything then it's just mental masturbation that's what we call it action action action remember that and honestly in my opinion the best learning doesn't come from reading it comes from executing on something getting feedback and then adjusting and you learn much better through that process it's the whole concept of deliberate practice now the basics like the principles you could always learn from a book that's good to have that foundation but you're not actually gonna understand those basics or those principles until you practice them you could understand them on the surface level to begin with but until you practice you're never gonna get deeper it's like what a Josh white-skinned said the famous chess player searching for Bobby Fischer he says he's making smaller and smaller circles and I actually didn't fully understand that until about a month ago cuz what it means is that you can understand something but over you just understand it better and better so my analogy that makes more sense than you get deeper and deeper PIM is like circling around it coming closer and closer which I guess is true because in the process of learning you end up starting with something going to something else thinking you advanced way far and then ending up back at square one again you're like wait a second did I just go in a circle it's like yeah you went in a circle but you're also at a deeper level of that same point because you understand this first step way better does that make sense right we'll make a different video about that so anyway take the knowledge you got from the book execute it get the feedback adjust that's how you're gonna learn the best also one last thing I gotta say about reading everyone talks about reading broad random stuff so basically like just in case information but to the tenth power so they say oh reading really broadly will influence your specific area because you'll come up with new ideas and relationships and things like that like you'll read about bacteria and you're gonna become a better investor or like in the book list the Twitter guys make four of the books will be virtual signalling and one will be completely random there'll be a book about how to like tile a floor these guys will post about it they'll be like this tiling book changed my life changed how I looked at business because it turns out your business is just like tiles that fit together and the grout is the connections that go through the tiles when the guy's talking about some book like tiling for dummies is a shut the hell out of me you're doing too much too much so people way overdo it with the broad reading I'm not saying don't do it at all because you definitely will be able to look at something from a different angle just by studying some random topic let me keep that to 10% rest of the stuff you want to focus more on direct action that's what's gonna push you forward help you make more money or whatever you're trying to do at the end of the day remember ideas are a dime a dozen execution is everything so spend 90% of your time executing and 10% pondering in a thinking chair with a leather-bound book just avoid being a pretentious douche and you'll be on the right track and if you want to execute better on picking stocks and definitely check out our checklist it's free it's good stuff it'll save you a lot of time so you can read more comment down below let me know how wrong I am about this reading thing I'm sure at least a few people or everyone will disagree with me or maybe not let me know in the comments I love comments smash like to subscribe hit the notification bells you get an email notification when new videos come out this is fun right you want to watch more yeah you're not too busy reading are you charlie munger actually watches this channel that's a lie but subscribe anyway and I will see you in the next video stay fouled out there bye
