Cathie Wood is one of my favorite investors to follow closely, not necessarily because I agree with all of her investment decisions, but rather because I really enjoy seeing which stocks she invests in. It's always a group of really interesting companies trying to do something exciting or revolutionary for the future.
And although many of those stocks can be highly speculative and high-risk, sometimes there can also be one or two hidden gems among them. That's why I don't pay too much attention to what detractors say about Cathie. In fact, I like her a lot and I'm very glad that there's a great investor like her here.
Furthermore, whether you like it or not, you should acknowledge her merit as one of the few major investors who publishes all of her stock market transactions every day. Because if you want to see Warren Buffett's or Ray Dalio's, for example, you would have to wait for their investment firms to publish their quarterly updates.
But not with Cathie Wood and ARK Invest, whom I respect very much. In fact, that's why in today's video, we'll be looking at the five biggest stock purchases Cathy made this very month of January 2024. Is n't that great? And, by the way, he's been investing a lot of money in the stock market lately because of all the recent volatility.
So it's going to be a lot of fun to watch. And of course, guys, as is typical of All Is World, I will not only give you my opinion on each of these five actions, but I will also rank them from best to worst based on that opinion. So it's going to be a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy the video. If so, consider subscribing.

Those things really help keep this channel alive. Thank you to everyone who supports me in that way. I couldn't do this without you. Thank you so much. I love you all and I truly appreciate all your help. But, having said all that, let's not waste any more time, guys. This is going to be fun. Let's jump right into this new list of the five biggest stock purchases Cathie Wood is making right now in January 2024.
Okay. Now, we will count from the smallest purchase to the largest. And in the number one spot, the smallest of the group will be Iridium Communications, with the symbol IRDM, of which Cathie bought more than 200,000 shares last month, which at the current price leaves her with about 7.5 million dollars.
Therefore, even though it's the smallest purchase , it's still quite large overall. Now, if you've never heard of this company, it 's actually one of the world's largest satellite communications companies , and they claim to be the only network capable of covering the entire planet. And through their products and services, they offer voice, internet and data, tracking, messaging and much more not only to consumers, but also to businesses and even governments , which by the way include both nationals and foreigners through that satellite network.
They also recently launched Project Stardust, which aims to provide these services for the Internet of Things as well, which should be an extremely large and growing market in the future. And overall, it's a very exciting company that's trying to do a lot of things. But a couple of concerns I've had from the beginning are that, while satellites provide more coverage, they are often not as strong or reliable as more localized networks that use elements like towers and fiber.
However, the counterargument to that is that satellites are at least more useful for rural and hard-to-reach areas that terrestrial infrastructure struggles to reach. I'm sorry, I can't speak today, but, for example, Iridium technology was recently showcased during the longest solo bicycle crossing of Antarctica.
Simply stunning. However, another concern would be the growing competition, particularly from Elon Musk with SpaceX and Starlink, which, although primarily focused on the internet, could potentially expand into voice and data services in the future as well. But at least for the time being, I think Iridium has done a great job of capturing a large share of the market, which has led to decent growth in both sales and a recent surpassing of the GAAP profitability reported last fiscal year.
Unfortunately, its growth appears to be slowing, and 2024 is expected to be a nearly flat year in terms of sales, which is not a good sign for a company that has barely begun to generate profits. And although the shares have fallen at least almost half their value from the peak, leaving them at the low of their 52-week range, they are still up almost 100% over the past 5 years with a fairly high valuation of a P/E ratio of 131 and a PS ratio of almost 6, respectively.
I think the P/E ratio could drop quickly if they continue to grow earnings, but for the moment, it's still a bit high. However , I like the business. I like the fact that they have already built a fairly large network of 66 operational satellites with nine spares in orbit, which, as you know, had a high initial cost, but can now generate recurring revenue with more than 2 million paying subscribers.
So, overall, I still see room for improvement in the future. I suppose the only thing that worries me is the slowdown in growth and the potentially increasing competition. Therefore, I'm going to have to rank it somewhere in the middle for now, probably number three, simply because I'm not excited enough to buy the shares myself.
Overall, it seems like an intermediate action. It has some advantages, but also some disadvantages. Personally, I think it's an intermediate action. Alright , let's move on to action number two. We have one of Cathie's favorite biotechs and also one of her biggest investments. In CRISPR Therapeutics, with the symbol CRSP, in which it recently increased its position in January by another $22 million .
And I suppose Cathie clearly feels that this is a good time to buy after it has plummeted more than 70% from its peak. So what the heck is going on with these stocks? Well , as its name suggests, it is a biotechnology company that has focused on the development and future potential of CRISPR gene-editing technologies, which, of course, are used to cut and edit DNA in order to treat all kinds of diseases, such as hereditary diseases and autoimmune blood disorders.
They are used for regenerative purposes and even to treat cancer. Of course, the potential of all this is truly promising and exciting, which can sometimes cause the share price to soar when they are about to launch a new treatment, gain regulatory approval, or even announce a collaborative partnership with another company.
Therefore, we often see that their finances are just as volatile. However, while it is true that most of their treatments are still stuck in their product pipeline and undergoing various trials, CRISPR has received regulatory approval for at least two different blood treatments, which I believe are the first gene-editing treatments to receive approval worldwide.
And over time, there should be more approvals, which is why the shares are attractive even though they've dropped so much right now. In fact, I'm thinking of buying a small part myself, which I could do next week if I can convince myself to take that risk and bet on its future potential, since, unfortunately, the valuation is still quite high, but I still like it.
I like probabilities and I think I'm going to give it a pretty high ranking, number two, for that reason. It's quite a tempting stock and, as I said, I might buy it soon. Okay, moving on to the third largest purchase, we have another biotechnology company, this time Recursion Pharmaceuticals, symbol RXRX, which Cathie bought for more than $33 million in January.
This company is primarily dedicated to the business of discovering new drugs, and one of the reasons it has received so much attention, particularly from Kathy Wood, is because it uses artificial intelligence to achieve this, which it believes can help not only reduce costs, but also the time it takes to research , identify, and develop new drug treatments for various diseases.
And, for the moment, its AI platform only has three rare disease programs in phase two trials, and another couple of programs have just completed phase one. All of them will probably need at least a couple more years before they get any kind of regulatory approval, let alone an actual commercial launch.
And because of that, Recursion's finances have been, well, to put it mildly, pretty awful. And that's not so mild, but they've been bad. And that's because sometimes they generate even more losses than they generate in sales. But, although its in-house treatments are still taking time to develop, Recursion is at least taking the opportunity to license its platform to other pharmaceutical companies within this gigantic sector.
For example, pharmaceutical giant Bayer is using Recursion's AI platform to research new drug treatments for cancer, while even technology and AI specialist Nvidia has invested tens of millions of dollars in this company. Well, in the long term, I think there's a lot of potential here worth investing in for anyone who wants to make a speculative bet on the future of AI in healthcare, which, after losing more than three-quarters of its value, I have to admit is becoming a bit tempting at the moment.
But overall, I still think it's too risky without significant enough results to justify a large investment in the company, and even if I considered it a risky biotechnology, I, personally, would still prefer to invest my money in CRISPR. So this one will have to come in last place for that reason . I'm not saying it's a terrible SPAC stock, but it's not one I'd feel very confident betting on, at least not yet.
Well, that leaves us now with the last two stocks on the list. And at number four, well , as expected, we have another biotechnology here. This time, it was 10X Genomics, whose stock symbol is TXG, which Cathy bought for a whopping $40 million just last month. So , what does this company do? Well, as its name suggests, it is another biotechnology company related to genes, except that this one mainly sells analyzer devices and related services for laboratory use, where these systems are able to quickly analyze thousands of different data points related to cells, their health, their behavior and anything else that has to do with them, which in turn is used for many different applications in biomedicine.
For example, their cellular immune profiling system can analyze how T cells respond to various infections, including, incidentally, the pepperoni of the most recent pandemic. It is a very impressive piece of work, which is why its tools are already used by each and every one of the top 100 research institutions in the world, with more than 7,000 publications on its work, which is not only more than any other direct competitor, but probably more than all of them put together.
But in addition to that, it is also proof that their products are essential for both current and future research in biological sciences . A clear example is that the company is already generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually with a solid double-digit growth rate . But, like many of Kathy Wood's actions, this is another speculative play with large losses on the final balance sheet.
And even after plummeting in the wake of the pandemic, the stock remains highly valued, even on the very forgiving price-to-sales metric. I'm not saying they're bad speculative stocks, but it's the one that, personally, I find hardest to research and understand the whole business, at least from the list we've covered so far.
And, especially for that reason, I feel I have to put them last. I mean , it might be good for others who know more about this field, but I have enough work these days without having to do much more research on a company that, you know, I'd say I'm not even that excited about to begin with. So I think I find the others on this list a little more interesting, a little easier to understand, and that's why I'm going to give it the lowest rating for now.
Very good, guys. But that leaves us now with the last stock on the list, the biggest buy of all. And yes, it 's not a big surprise. That stock is one of Cathie Wood's favorites at Tesla, with the symbol TSLA, which is not only one of her biggest investments, but she also decided to add another $45 million in January alone.
Which, yes, I can perfectly understand why, since Cathie is famous for buying more when her favorite stocks fall. And that's exactly what Tesla has been experiencing lately, as its stock price has not only fallen by almost 30% in the last month alone, but has also lost more than half of its total value.
Much of this has been due to a slowdown in growth caused by a combination of factors including a weak economy, high interest rates and inflation, lower demand for high-priced electric vehicles and even increasing competition. The most recent earnings report they released last week perfectly illustrates all of this , as it marked four out of five quarters of slowing growth with only a 3.5% year-over-year increase in sales, which is quite low.
In addition, Tesla has been lowering the prices of its vehicles for more than a year in an effort to help consumers cope with high inflation and high interest rates, hoping to keep demand high during a period of increasing competition in key markets . However, that has also led to weaker margins, which have been declining for some time, and lower overall revenue growth that Tesla believes could be even worse in 2024.
But while most investors are selling shares, I think Cathie may have justification for buying on the dip, as Tesla is rapidly becoming a much more diversified company than just a traditional automaker. For example, their energy deployments more than doubled in 2023. They recently unveiled the second generation of their AI robot, which continues to improve its capabilities, which can now be applied to almost anything, whether it's working on an assembly line for manufacturing or transporting goods, automating tasks, or simply acting as a personal assistant.
But Elon Musk, for example, believes that it will ultimately be the most important part of his business, something he also stated during the recent earnings release, which could launch next year, which would be very soon. I don't think it will be that soon, but he seems quite optimistic about it. Anyway, in the meantime, they have a lot of other things going on.
I mean, the Tesla Semi continues to grow and has received very good reviews. The Cybertruck has officially launched and should be growing as well. Their autonomous driving network continues to improve, and they have just launched a new version called V12 that is replacing hundreds of thousands of lines of computer code with AI neural networks and is said to finally be paving the way for a more widespread rollout of autonomous driving, which we all know how massive that market could become over time and which would generate recurring revenue for services, something that even Elon has said in the past that he would be willing to license to other companies.
That could be a great engine of growth for them in the long term. And even if we focus only on Tesla, a pure car manufacturer, Elon even spoke of weaker growth, saying that while everyone wants a Tesla, many consumers simply cannot afford the higher-priced electric vehicles right now in the current economy.
Therefore, they are going to change their approach to finally launch their next generation of cheaper mass-market vehicles in 2025, where growth is likely to return in a big way. While I'm not saying Tesla is the best stock on the market right now, I think it could definitely have a pretty tough 2024.
But apart from that, I still think it's worth investing for the long term because of the future potential. And in comparison to most of Cathie Wood's stocks , which are usually heavily in the red, Tesla continues to post record deliveries every year, with financial records on both the top and bottom lines as well.
And I would say that's why I'll have to rank it here as number one on the list. I might even consider adding a few more to my own position if it continues to fall as it has been. But there you have it, folks. In conclusion, I found this update on Cathie Wood's purchases quite interesting and also somewhat appealing.
I can understand why he's buying almost all of these stocks. And although I wouldn't necessarily invest in all of them, I do like the combination of Tesla and Crispr, with Tesla being the most reliable long-term investment, while Crispr is the riskiest but also most potentially rewarding speculative investment, and I like those two combined.
So I like my first and second rankings. I might buy some of them in the coming weeks or even months. But tell me if you agree with me on the classification, if you agree with any of my ideas, if you want to add something, or if you disagree with something. I would love to hear your opinions. If you are investing in any of these stocks, leave a comment below.
But thanks again for stopping by, friends. I hope you are all well and see you next time. Okay , everyone take care. Bye bye.
