Hello, viewers of "Rich Magic T." Thank you for taking the time to watch my video today. It is the evening of January 16, 2025. The topic we will discuss today is: if we aim for an upward trend through long-term investment in SOXX, will Excel also trend upward? Yes, Excel currently possesses the characteristics of an upward trend for long-term investment.
On the other hand, SX is an ETF where attractive returns and realistic risks coexist. While both SOXX and Excel estimate the IC semiconductor index, you can view them as presenting different appeals and risks to investors. In particular, wouldn't it be an interesting question to see how the returns of the two compare from a long-term investment perspective?
If they were to miraculously show an upward trend, would Excel also exhibit the same trend? To give you the conclusion first, the simple answer is no. Although the two ETFs estimate the same index, there is a difference because they reflect the index fluctuation rate differently. For reference, SOXX reflects the exact fluctuation rate of the IC semiconductor index.
It is called a "price." If you look at it, it is the iShares Semiconductor ETF, with a market capitalization of about 21.1% in Korean won, and it was listed in 2001. It was listed on July 30th. Looking briefly at the investment indicators, the management fee is set at 0.35%, and dividends have been paid four times in the last 12 months (March, June, September, and December).
The annual dividend per share is approximately 210 won, and the yield is 0.64%. Now, let's take a look at SXL. It is a triple- leverage ETF that reflects three times the volatility of the SXL IC semiconductor index. It is called the Direxion US Semiconductor Triple ETF, or sometimes shortened to SXL.
You can simply keep in mind that it generates profits by hitting three times the rate of increase when the stock prices of the top 30 semiconductor companies listed on the US stock market rise. The market capitalization is 14.6% in Korean won. It was listed on March 11, 2010. If we look at the investment indicators, the management fee is 0.76%, and dividends have been paid four times in the last 12 months (March, June, September, and December).
The annual dividend per share is 4,681 won. Dividends are paid out at a certain level, and the yield is 1.05% per year. Looking at it this way, even if SOXX rises in the long term, there is no guarantee that SXL will rise at the same rate. In fact, depending on market volatility, SXL's return could rise or fall much more significantly than SOXX's.
Let's look at the advantages of SXL. High returns are possible; when the market rises, you can pursue a return three times higher than SOXX's 1x leverage. On the other hand, the disadvantage of SXL is its high volatility. If the market falls, SXL can incur significant losses. Therefore, it is a high-risk product.
Regarding management fees and administration costs, SOXX is 0.76% compared to SOXX's 0.35%—although not exactly double, you should keep in mind that the management fee is about twice as high. Now, let's compare the charts of SOXX and SXL to see how the returns turn out. Looking at the daily charts, SOXX is at 0.1% - 0.1%.
Actually, the return isn't good right now; it shows a loss. SXL is at -0.8%. The return is poor, as expected, resulting in a loss. SOXX If we compare the two, SX has a higher return, but both are losing money. Currently, the semiconductor market has dropped significantly. Ah, that is why. Below is the monthly chart.
If you look at the monthly chart, it is flat. A 0% return is terrible, isn't it? SXL is -2.5%. There is a difference. While SXX has a 0% return, SX has a negative return. Now let's take a look at the 1-year chart. The 1-year chart is a bit different. If you look, profits are starting to come in now.
SXX recorded a return of 20.14%, and SXL recorded a return of 6.55%. So far, SXX's return is higher compared to SXL. It is just that it is currently in the negative as of the 5th, but after investing for about a year, it is showing a profit. Both are. And below is the 5-year chart. The 5-year chart shows a whopping 157.43% return for SXX and 48.16% for SXL.
So far, you might think, "Oh, the returns are good compared to SXX and SXL." However, let's take a look at the all-year chart. Since SXL's listing... Looking at it so far, SOXX is showing a return of 128.1%. On the other hand, SXL is showing a tremendous return of a whopping 3.9% and 7.14%. This is the SXL graph right now; the one below is the graph showing the upward trend.
And below is when SXL hit its peak during the COVID era. At that time, SOXX generated a profit of 850.00%, while SXL showed a return of a whopping 99% and 2.38%. It's incredible, isn't it? And this is SXL, this is SOXX. The probability is tremendous. Therefore, SXL is not simply an investment product that triples the return of SX.
You can tell just by looking. Investors clearly understand that along with the high potential for returns, SXL involves high volatility and management costs, and that it is suitable for long-term rather than short-term investment. There are usually people who say, "You shouldn't invest long-term; you should look at it short-term." It seems they haven't studied properly and have only memorized the part where someone else said, "Oh, SXL is dangerous." When viewed this way, the SXL return is incredible.
Usually, if you just look at the daily chart, SXL If I say, "It’s extremely risky, but I’m only going to do short-term investing," you might think that, from a miracle perspective, I could generate massive returns. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt. If you have an extraordinary talent, you might make huge profits.
It’s just my personal opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt. Also, there is no evidence that past returns guarantee future profits. It can simply be helpful in understanding SXL's volatility and return patterns. I was able to show you that regarding leverage, if you set long-term goals rather than pursuing short-term profits, and then implement an investment strategy that aligns with them, you can succeed.
So, I don't buy and sell every time YouTube revenue comes in; I plan to act strictly, just like I did during the last crash. Of course, SXL could crash contrary to my expectations—it could certainly crash. However, because I have conviction based on my own studies, I will act; if a crash comes, I think, "Oh, this is a huge opportunity," and I will continue to accumulate.
Ultimately, I found that stocks grow my assets when I don't get discouraged by crashes and volatility, but instead study consistently and have conviction through that study. So, stocks... well, they make the company work now. If I were to work by constantly buying and selling, it would disrupt my main job and wouldn't yield very high returns.
Furthermore, if I were to invest out of sync with the market, using triple leverage could turn this into an extremely risky stock that obliterates not only my own assets but also my entire fortune. However, I am currently investing with a relaxed mindset, thinking, "I’m going to accumulate SXL." Before considering investing in SXL, I want to reiterate that investors must carefully consider their investment style, risk tolerance, and investment timeframe; these factors are not directly linked.
Also, I will strictly manage my portfolio allocation by setting aside exactly 10% of my available assets and investing through staggered purchases. This is because risk management is only possible when you hold 90% of your available assets, allowing you to mitigate the risks associated with a massive crash—for example, like the one in 2022.
Let me emphasize once again that when using leverage, blind, passive investment is absolutely not the answer. I wish you careful decision-making and hope you invest only when you have your own conviction. Let us all walk the path of successful investing together. Let's meet. I'm always rooting for you. Thank you.
