Michael Bury has an estimated net worth of approximately 300 million, and of that, he had only invested a mere 3 million in US stocks in 2022. Now he has invested considerably more, a total of 114 million. What he's done with it, where he's invested, and how he trades – we'll look at all of that in this video.
Welcome! Yes, Michael Bury has been known since the 2008 financial crisis. Back then, he speculated on falling stock prices and generally declining markets, making a name for himself. Shortly afterward, he paid out his investors and currently only manages his own assets and perhaps some family funds.
However, unlike other wealth managers who also manage other people's money, he doesn't manage his own assets. Since his net worth exceeds 100 million, he is required to report his financial statements to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) 45 days after the end of each quarter. This is how we learn what he's been doing.
Michael Bury doesn't do things by halves; he always goes all in or not at all. He has sold the following companies... You can see the companies listed here in the image. Below are companies like Oracle, CV, Self, Nextar, Google, MGM Resorts, Booking.com, Warnabros, and several others. I'm always interested in whether he traded options, whether he bets on rising or falling markets with options, and in the first quarter, i.e., on March 31, 2023, he had no open option positions.
Let's take a look at which stocks he recently bought or increased his holdings. Before we get to that, remember to subscribe to my channel. Michael Bury only held one company; he either bought all the others or purchased additional shares. This company, which he simply held, was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in London, outside of America.
It's the largest position in Michael Bury's portfolio. It's British American Tobacco, and as the name suggests, the company operates in the tobacco and nicotine sector. He invested a total of 11.2 million in this company, or that was the value on March 31, 2024. His second and third largest positions are companies from China.
While he invested 9.68 million in JD.com and 9.045 million in Alibaba, investing in China can currently be worthwhile, especially considering the Hang Seng Index, which is rather low at the moment. This increases the likelihood of a turnaround and a subsequent rise. He also added further shares in these two companies during the first quarter.
HCA Health, his fourth largest holding, represents the stakes he holds in the respective companies, ranging from 2 to 12 million. His next largest position is City Group, followed by Sport Physical Gold Trust, where he is betting 7.6 million on rising gold prices. So far, this has been successful, generating profits.
Interestingly, he chose an ETF, a trust, that also distributes dividends. He could have purchased cheaper, non- distributing trusts, which would have provided him with physical gold. However, he opted for a slightly more expensive trust, which offers the advantage of... Buying gold, does that mean he expects a crash, that we need to be careful, that he's signaling some kind of warning?
Michael Bury is rather a pessimist, so his name is... well, he's always somewhat cautious. He does take on large bets, but he also often sees a crash that does n't come. In the last three years, he often predicted a crash, especially on Twitter (back then, it was Twitter). He doesn't post as much these days, though, and hasn't issued a warning in a long time.
But back then, when he did issue these warnings, he was often wrong, or he was right, but the market didn't fall as drastically as he expected. So it's quite possible that this is a form of hedging for Michael Bury, that he's being more cautious with a portion of his invested capital. Basically, we can always be more cautious; the higher the market goes, the more cautious we need to be because at some point, the whole thing will turn around.
Other companies he's acquired or recently bought include Block Signa Advanced, Outerps, BP Vital Energy, Star Carriers, Real, First Solar, and another Chinese company, Beidu, where he has 4,211 Millions are then invested in American Coastal Insurance and Safe Bakers, and this is how the whole thing looks in percentage terms.
So we can see here that British Tobacco is the largest position. In summary, we can say that Michael Bury is more of a short-term investor. If we compare him to Warren Buffett, for example, we have to be a bit careful about whether we follow him or copy him. We should always carefully evaluate the companies that interest us ourselves and not simply do what he does, because it's quite possible that you've already sold some of these positions.
So examine these stocks carefully, and if you need help, feel free to contact me. We can also say that Michael Bury is somewhat more bullish, betting on rising prices, but also that his share of American stocks is somewhat lower in the overall portfolio when we consider the Asian stocks and the Gold Trust.
