Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the most famous investor and trader of the country till date, who was once called The Big Bull of Down Street and sometimes the Warren Buffett of India. In 1985, he started investing with just ₹5000 and today his family's listed portfolio is worth more than ₹64,000 crore, or about ₹ 7.8 billion.
But his identity was not just about money. What made him different from others was his boldness in taking risks in every situation. This is the reason that even today when someone says Big Bull, the first image that comes to mind is that of Jhunjhunwala. It has been three years since he passed away but till date no one has been able to take his place and this raises the biggest question that who will carry forward his unbeatable legacy ?
Is there any investor or trader in today's times who can make a name for himself like Jhunjhunwala? In fact, recently Dalal Street investors remembered Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and paid tribute to him. But when they were asked who would be able to replace Jhunjhunwala, no one had a clear answer. Even today no one has been able to touch the scale of Jhunjhunwala.
His family portfolio is now managed by his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala. By June 2025, it was worth around Rs 64,000 crore. He invested money in companies like Titan and Lupin at a time when no one wanted to invest in them and today his investment has proved to be gold worth crores of rupees. In the year 2002-2003, when Titan's performance was not good and very few people could see any hope in it, then Jhunjhunwala started investing in it.
At that time he bought Titan shares at very cheap prices. Their average purchase price was around ₹30 per share. Some time passed and by 2024, his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala owned around 5.34% stake in Titan, which was worth around ₹16,000 crore. At that time, Titan's share price was around ₹34.4 per share.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had already recognised India 's growing middle class and their fondness for branded jewellery. Maintaining this investment with patience for almost two decades showed the effect of compounding and this is why he is counted among the biggest and most successful investors of India.
Even today, many big investors pick up hidden stocks and hold them for a long time. The market has also been rising continuously for the last few years. But why did his portfolio not become as big as Jhunjhunwala's? The biggest reason for this is leverage. Jhunjhunwala used to buy shares not only with his own money but also by taking huge loans.
This increased their buying power manifold and if the bet was right, the returns were tremendous. But most investors today don't take that much risk. He does not take big risks by borrowing money. Those who use leverage do so only for a small amount of trading and not for large and long term investments.
This reduces their risk but this is the reason why till date no one has been able to create a portfolio like Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. It is said that he was a great risk taker and an all-rounder. Long term investing, short term trading, different asset classes, all are experts. Jhunjhunwala's era was different.
At that time the Sensex was only between 5000 and 20,000. Shares of many good companies were available very cheaply. There was a lack of information in the market. Meaning people could easily get good opportunities. But in today's time the situation has changed. Now Sensex has crossed 80. There are many investors keeping an eye on every company.
Regulations have also become stricter. This means that finding such cheap and hidden stocks is extremely difficult these days. Today's investors play wisely and cautiously but Jhunjhunwala's style was different. He used to place big bets. Perhaps this is the reason why even today no one has been able to take his place. on Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. For more such videos, keep watching Money lel.com. So
