01. this billionaire hedge fund boss named Ken Griffin sues IRS for leak of his tax returns which by the way I think is pretty messed up that people's tax returns to get leaked like that is so wrong on so many different levels that being said let's get right into it billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin has filed a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service alleging that someone at the agency illegally leaked his tax returns to the new site Pro publica last year Griffin the founder and CEO of Citadel accused the IRS in the treasury Department of bridging privacy laws after pro-publica published tax information of billionaires including Tesla CEO Elon Musk Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Real Estate Mogul Stephen Ross the post has sought comment from the treasury Department which has vowed to investigate the lake which of course they were never going to do so Pub Pro public Hub published a series of expose titled the secret IRS FiOS last year examining thousands of tax returns belonging to the wealthiest Americans the site reported that between 2013 and 2018 Griffin whose net worth is estimated by Forbes to be 31.9 billion dollars reported an average annual income of almost 1.7 billion dollars but paid a tax rate of just 29.2 percent far lower than the top of marginal income tax rate of nearly 40 percent and basically to like keep that in mind right let's say that you were to win like the lottery and you got like a million dollars right actually let's not even say Lottery let's say that you made one million dollars right you would typically have to pay about 40 percent of federal income tax which is crazy right not including like state tax as well which could bump that up as well which would be horrible meaning that basically almost for like pretty much anyone else for every dollar you make well like earn I should say you actually only get to keep 60 cents of that which is disgusting right this is the thing that I dislike the most about taxes of any sort it's like you're pretty much having a government basically be like oh I see that you know you got that dollar in your wallet but um yeah we're gonna have to take that dollar and only allow you to keep 60 cents on that dollar right it's like it's such a disgusting feeling because like what does the government really do for people you know it's just like a little rant that I have it's just like to me taxes should just be so simple where it's just a flat like 10 tax where you could choose where to allocate that ten percent right like if you care more about like Health Care maybe have eight percent go to health care and then one percent go to like military and one percent go to something else right it's just something to think about like I hate that one you never really know how much taxes you actually owe and then two like you could just be screwed by the IRS at any given point so pro-publica found that other Moguls worth billions managed to avoid income tax entirely for years by claiming substantial losses in their businesses not only that there's a lot of billionaires or people who are extremely high net worth as well where what they do is like say they got like a billion dollars in like Apple stock they will take a loan off of that stock price and live off of that loan and also make money from that loan by like investing money into other companies and whatnot like it's kind of like a really weird kind of a disgusting method where like basically you're using bank money to live off and invest on without ever really touching your own money is like pretty disgusting so the IRS made these awful unlawful disclosures doingly or at the very least negligently or with gross negligence Griffin's lawsuit which was filed in Miami Federal court on Tuesday States the IRS willfully fail to establish appropriate administrative Technical and physical with safeguards to ensure the security and confidentially of Mr Griffin's confidential taxpayer information which by the way there is no reason why a tax return should ever be leaked the lawsuit continued despite being aware of his security deficiencies for over a decade the IRS willfully failed to establish appropriate administrative Technical and physical safeguards to ensure the security of confidential tax return information including Mr Griffin's confidential tax return information the IRS Personnel exploited these willful failures to misappropriate Mr Griffin's confidential tax return information and unlawfully disclose that information to propublica for further publication the court filing stated Griffin is seeking one thousand dollars for each Act of unauthorized disclosure as well as unspecified damages Republicans who Express outrage at the leak of the tax returns of vowed to pursue further investigations once they assume control of the House of Representatives after the new year Iris employees deliberately stole the confidential tax returns of several hundred successful American Business Leaders Griffin said in the statement published by The Wall Street Journal it is unacceptable that government officials have failed to thoroughly investigate this unlawful theft of confidential and personal information Stephen Engelberg propublica's editor-in-chief in the site's then President Dick TOEFL bro last year they were quite selectively in carefully publishing confidential tax return data because we believe it serves the public interest in fundamental ways allowing readers to see patterns that were Until Now hidden pro publica has not specified precisely how it obtained the information well I mean one it got like a leaked to them let's see so feel free to give your thoughts on this the thing is I think a lot of people don't really understand taxes really in general and just how much you get screwed over and the thing is the biggest issue with the story is that you have people in the federal government specifically in the IRS that are willing to expose your private information for any reason at all right which is a scary thing because if they're willing to do that with tax returns what are they willing to do then like are they will into just like fake things now are they willing to just try to smear people now right so it gets into like a really weird situation where like if you can't trust that the IRS is going to be lawful then wouldn't that make it hard for people to be willing to actually pay their taxes like that's what I see from this whole situation right because who in their right mind would put their faith in the tax system into paying the government money that it did not earn when all of your information can just be leaked like that like that's I guess it's like a really weird situation because you know how much taxes are you willing to pay to a government that is just going to expose you you know it's just my kind of viewpoint on it and the thing is like and this is the sad thing too no matter who you are you have to do your best to try to pay taxes or go through the legal routes to minimize your tax burden because if you screw up you could potentially be fined massive amounts of money but not only that you could be jailed or even sent to prison for not really paying your taxes like which is crazy right like you are going to have to pay taxes and if you don't you're going to get jail or prisoned but also you got to keep in mind you are basically forced to give your robber your money otherwise your robber will basically put you into prison I I've always found taxes to be such a weird situation like and the thing is I understand taxes to an extent which is why I'm so much more in favor of something like a 10 flat tax without any loophole so that no one can avoid the tax system but people are never going to really vote for that which is sad
