I think you need to look in the mirror and ultimately now refocus back on Tesla, and I think for Twitter it's really been using Tesla as an ATM machine. Our worry is that it hurts the brand. It hurts the brand of Tesla, Musk is the brand, and this has just been a circus show that, in an almost torturous way, just continues to get worse.
Hey everyone, Alex Unesco here, welcome to Investors Guide to the Galaxy. Is Dan Ives upset with Elon Musk? He slashed the target price for Tesla stock to 250 dollars from 300. Let's dive right into it. Tesla stock price today is up 2.75 percent here, and it's down 51 percent. Daniel Ives on Yahoo Finance: "It's a radically changed Twitter," says Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, taking a hard stance on Musk's move, saying Tesla is in a purely painful, dark situation, and that Musk has managed to do what bears have tried for years: cutting his price target to 250 dollars.
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives joins us now. Dan, you've had enough? Look, I think the clock struck midnight on the frustration, and it's gotten to a point where Musk needs to look in the mirror and ultimately refocus back on Tesla. For Twitter, it's really been using Tesla as an ATM machine, and our worry is that it hurts the brand. It hurts the brand of Tesla. Musk is the brand, and this has just been a circus show that, in an almost torturous way, just continues to get worse.
What would get you to go back and upgrade the stock? Look, we still have a Buy rating and a 250 dollar price target, but the reason we took it off our top picks list is that in the near term it's going to be hard for the stock to significantly outperform until this Twitter black cloud ultimately clears, in what's still a jittery environment for risk-on. I believe Tesla is still on pace for a very strong Q4, and the long-term thesis is unchanged, though we'll cut the next year or two. But this has gotten to a tipping point, and I think it's really a moment of truth for us to refocus back on the golden child, Tesla, because Twitter is essential to Tom Hanks' Money Pit movie, and that's part of the problem.
Dan, when you think about not just the competitive environment but how Tesla is operating itself right now, even with the attention Elon Musk is giving to Twitter at this point in time, is it a good scenario for Tesla to be able to focus without Musk breathing down the necks of people over at Tesla, or is he a net beneficiary to the brand of Tesla? When you do have Elon Musk on the factory floor, in people's faces and making sure he's visible throughout the entire production experience...
Yeah, but this would be like Cook being in the Galapagos Islands while Apple is going through a supply chain issue in China. That's part of the problem: Tesla needs Musk more than it ever has. It's a very significant period in the next six to nine months. I agree with the first part of what the host said. I think Tesla has grown up now and doesn't need attention from Elon Musk all the time like it needed before, from time to time, yes, but not all the time. The issue is the antics we've seen on Twitter. From an advertising perspective, it's a brand destruction, and that's the biggest problem. Ultimately, Musk is the brand of Tesla, and that's why it was one thing in terms of selling stock, but now it has started to bleed over. That's why for us it was: enough is enough, time to come out and make a statement, because in my opinion it has impacted the stock.
Exactly, this has impacted the stock price. That's correct, but it did not impact Tesla as a company. Moreover, Tesla got a boost as a recognized brand even though some publicity is negative, but it's still publicity. We know Tesla is not doing advertising here. This is advertising in the style of Elon Musk: he is tearing up things on Twitter, people start to search for information about him, find the companies he has, and eventually actually buy the products. Is this far-fetched? I don't know, maybe. I'd like to know your opinion on all of this. Please leave a comment below.
