01. hello and welcome you're watching money nine i'm sakshi patra and on the show we talk all about stock markets now markets are having a dream run right now to talk more about what should you be doing as investors in the current market run i have with me a very special guest joining in with me is mr varun malhotra he's the founder of edge institute for financial studies and he joins in on this edition of market master class warren thank you so much for taking our time for us it's great to have you with us on money9 market master class and you have been an investor for last about two decades you've been speaking to so many people through your youtube channel through the many webinars that you continuously keep posting you've been connecting so many new investors first-time investors to stock markets helping helping them to keep start their journey towards financial freedom so i'm sure this conversation is going to be an interesting one for all those investors who really want to take that plunge looking at the current record run off the stock markets as well so uh let me kick start by asking you that stock markets for beginners uh can also be you know a lot complicated uh for first-time investors especially and right now when we are seeing that the stock markets have had this dependence run at an all-time high many investors are feeling that fomo that only if i could participate and take that pie and you know enjoy the benefits of the rally that we have been seeing wanted to ask you for those investors still out of the or still sitting on the sidelines is it the right time to enter markets so i think the most important thing here to understand for all the viewers is that they don't have to look for a particular best time or best day to invest in stock markets they can start investing on any given day now when i say that what i mean is that if you're planning to achieve it or accumulate wealth for a goal that is about say five or ten years away from now and you are going to achieve that through a systematic investment plan there is no good or bad day you can start it even today now why i say that is now assuming that markets are at its peak right now and you start investing through a fixed amount through a sip and even if the markets go down and collapse and you keep investing with that same amount of money every month you would be able to buy more units when the markets go low so which is the concept of dollar cost averaging or rupee cost averaging so i don't think viewers have to worry about where the markets are what are the mark is is the market expensive or cheap it is very important to understand what peter link says and he keeps on saying that far more money is lost in the anticipation of the fall rather than the fall itself or the correction itself so as long as sip is concerned i don't think they need to wait if their goals are 5-10 years or slightly more than seven eight years away from here as far as lump sum is concerned i think uh the viewers need to educate themselves better the chances of going wrong can be slightly higher for no nothing investors so lump sum might be tricky but if you're starting an sap is absolutely okay so don't worry about a good or a bad time just get into the market in anticipation of all if you are staying out of the markets that may not be the right strategy is what varun really is saying but uh let me take this step a little further okay uh you know most of the viewers now after listening to you have thought that okay whether it is a high time markets are expensive overvalued never mind i'll at least start by investing via sips you know small money small amounts of money 500 rupees 1000 rupees is what i will start off with in my investments but where do i put that money should you select a basket of stocks or should you invest that in mutual funds and even mutual funds there are so many varieties out there for a first time investor everything becomes too overwhelming how do you really decide where do i put that first 1000 rupees if i want to start investing so i think we have been very clear on that part for last 11 years now we start saying by you you need to understand that the easiest way to participate in india's growth story is a plain vanilla low cost index fund a nifty index fine and you can buy it from any amc any asset management company which has a index fund which has a low cost index fund i don't see any debate in that see the problem is and it has to be a plain vanilla index fund so i remember when we started talking about index fund about 11 years ago lot of people laughed at us and they said this concept will not work in india today the most astonishing thing is all the mutual funds have their index fund and another problem that has started is they have started to create fancy mutual funds now when i say fancy mutual funds you basically know that index funds have a very low expense ratio so companies do not make a lot of money so they come out with some fancy uh safe fancy index funds so that they can start charging higher but i don't think that a no nothing investor should try to do something like that he should basically invest in an index fund for a long period of time a sip in an index fund and they would be able to do better than most of the fund managers now when i say better than most of the fund managers they will definitely be some funds which might do better than the index but i don't think it makes sense to look for them because when you try to find the best find funds you might end up buying the worst fund that is the problem number one the next problem is that even if you find a good fund and though performance keeps on changing sometimes a particular fund as well and then you have to shift to other fund or another other theme if you keep on shifting your funds every five years you have to basically sell and now pay a tax of 10 even if it is a long term thing so even if a mutual fund gives you a percent higher when you keep on shifting you lose a lot of money by paying taxes and that can have a huge impact on your portfolio in the long run so if you are holding an index fund for a long period of time i think you would do better than most of the fund managers yeah so i wanted to just ask you at that point you know for a lot of investors out there uh it gets very confusing to understand uh whether an exchange traded fund at an index fund are they same things are they different things how do i because all these uh jargons become very uh you know complicated for them to understand what is the simplest way of going and you know deciding that okay this is the best index fund for me simple uh to understand and this is what i should start off with so so basically etf a nifty etf or a nifty index fund achieves the same goal it basically replicates the the returns of index there are just two different ways of buying an index fund you can either buy an index fund through a amc then we call it as an index fund or if you buy this very same fund on an exchange which is called as etf exchange traded fund the same fund is now called as an etf so i don't think there is any problem in buying any one of them you should be okay with it the only thing that i have seen in the last 10 11 years is if you are new to stock markets if you don't have a dmat account if you don't have a trading account it is better to stick to an index fund because you do not require all these things to start buying an index fund but the other problem is when people buy etf their tendency to buy and sell is very high so if you buy an index fund the probability that you are going to hold it for 10 15 years is very high and if you buy an etf the itch that you have to buy and sell is so high that you would not be able to hold it for a long period of time and you would not be able to benefit from the power of compounding so i think if you are new index points would be better etfs might be slightly cheaper but index fund have a slight advantage in terms of making you slightly more inactive okay now one more thing that i wanted to ask you this is about funds that we've spoken about the easiest and the simplest way of starting your investments and you know participating in the stock market journey and the returns that they give as an asset class but in the last one and a half years of the kind of boom that we have seen in the markets we've also seen about 1.4 crore new dmat accounts open so many more new retail investors have entered the free uh there is a trend of diy investments i want to do it myself and i want to see because i have read a bit and i want to participate there so for all those investors still wanting to take things in their own hands what would you suggest should they go for intraday trading should they seek long-term investments so the first thing that you need to understand is that stock markets are not meant for active income so i i think the prime minister would have decided to introduce this course rather than creating employment i think this is the biggest problem that most of the beginners think that this is a way to make money on daily basis uh in fact there is another theory derivative so what you need to understand here is key uh then people are making money around you it is so easy to get attracted to all those things because i can see a lot of youngsters getting into that these days and it can be very dangerous subsequently what is a derivative derivative is very very similar to an insurance product now what is an insurance insurance is you don't buy an insurance to make money you basically buy an insurance to hedge similarly when you buy an option you are using you have to use it if you want to use it use it for hedging your risk not for making money i think what worked at what problem now you would see some of your friends to that they are making money in derivatives so so there can be a time when they can be right for a year or two or three years and they would make a lot of money but when they go wrong they will lose so warren buffett keeps on saying some people learn in third standard that no matter how the big number is when you multiply it with zero it becomes zero so derivatives intraday leverage these are not the right absolutely foreign so if you are able to keep your margins higher for 10-15 years it basically means that you have you have created some kind of a mode and durable competitive advantage so i think i would start with a statement or a warren buffett quote that public opinion is not a substitute for so it's a very interesting technology it's a very efficient way of transferring money just a check was is a very efficient way of transferring money is and they will find a very suitable way to cut cryptocurrency down to its size in a democratic way okay it can know it was amazing to speak with you and you know seeking all the insights on stock market and i'm sure all the viewers who are first time investors who want to start their investment journey in stock markets would have benefited in a big day thank you so much it's been a pleasure and with that we wrap up this edition of market master class for you and we keep getting you such interesting conversations so that you can benefit and you can take the informed decisions about your money manage your money in the best way and also your investments in stock markets thanks a lot for tuning in for now
