01. i wouldn't start picking companies i don't know anything about in a country i don't know anything about again man has to know his limitations now how marx thinks every day vistas like you and me we shouldn't be investing in individual companies in china and he gave a pretty good reason to that so in today's video we're going to listen to his thoughts around how we should be investing into china so with that said let's jump on over and listen to what hal marx has to say for a regular investor who doesn't have your advantages of a team based in hong kong and a team in shanghai and the ability to invest in you know toxic property that may be selling incredibly cheap so for regular people like me it's the smart thing just to buy uh an index fund that invests in china or in china south korea india or like what would be the smart kind of long-term play if you just wanted to talk something away especially here in 2022 when as andrew points out uh readily available quantitative information about the present cannot be the road to superior performance most people should invest well first of all they should invest through others whether it's an index fund an etf or an actively managed account you know we don't do our own uh legal work dental work medical work uh most of we don't fix our own cars why should we manage our own money why should we believe that we have the ability as part-timers to do that so the amateur the uh should basically pick funds and managers in my opinions and as you say you may be or you want to go into a global fund uh that that includes china under their charter uh that's what that's what i think they should do uh and uh the professionals should think twice before dabbling in areas they don't know about uh and if i were a professional and i wanted to uh what would you say try a punt on china uh i would go into a fund i wouldn't start picking companies i don't know anything about in a country i don't know anything about uh again man has to know his limitations so it begs the question um you know every day sort of retail investors don't obviously have a lot of time to put into the investing practice even myself i'm lucky if i get an hour or two a day live a pretty hectic busy schedule especially with our nine month old and our life is generally pretty busy at the best of times um but i still try and fit at least an hour or two and every day into my investing sort of practice um and you know i kind of agree with what how marxist is just for the everyday investor maybe just investing into a chinese etf or emerging fund etf could be the better option if you don't want to sort of put the work in and to invest into individual companies but for me personally i do like the comfort that a lot of high profile these sort of value-based investors that we like to follow such as munch for brian guy spear phil town charlie munger and a number of other investors have also invested into a lot of these chinese companies over the last year or so so it definitely makes me feel a lot better when i know a lot of these guys are investing into these companies as well um they would have a far better understanding of these companies than what i do they probably some of them would have a team of analysts looking at these companies i know phil town has a number of events in china itself that are doing a lot of the sort of back work on a lot of these chinese companies um we're a few going and digging a bit more deeper into the weeds and looking at a couple of these sort of smaller companies in china maybe a bit more high risk whereas you're looking at these bigger companies such as alibaba and process and tencent they're all quite familiar with um a lot of this is all just geo sort of political sort of stuff that's going on in the background that's totally out of control take away all of that a lot of these companies are trading at extremely good valuations at the moment that's just my take on it though by all means do your own research on that um there are a number of different good platforms out there today to do some more research a company that i've recently just partnered up with is simply wall street which is fantastic if you're especially starting out on your investing journey and you want more of an understanding how to look at different companies definitely recommend checking out simply wall street i'll leave a link to that in the description below with that said that's it for today's video we'll catch you in the next one cheers guys
