Warren Buffett once said, " The key to investing is determining a company's competitive advantage and, more importantly, how long that advantage will last ." "The products or services that have strong and stable moats around them are the ones that will provide investors with profits." This philosophy has helped Buffett deliver 20% returns annually since he took over Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, resulting in a profit of more than 4 million percent .

Since 1956, Warren Buffett has been writing about his approach to finding unusual investments . In his annual shareholder letters, Buffett identifies four unique competitive advantages that can help you find attractive investments. If you are watching this channel for the first time , my name is Daniel.

You are watching ' Unrivaled Investing' . In this video, we're going to learn about the four types of competitive advantage, what they mean, how to identify them in individual companies, and one of my main holdings that I believe these four types of advantage have . If you like educational content related to investing, please hit the subscribe button, click the like button , and let's get to the point .

What are those four types of competitive advantages ? Those four competitive advantages are as follows . First, cost advantage. Second, intangible assets. Third, switching costs. And fourth, the network effect. Cost advantage means that you have a lower pricing structure or sufficient scale, allowing you to operate at prices that competitors cannot match .

Among the first examples of this type of cost advantage was John D. Rockefeller 's Standard Oil is one. A more recent example is Costco, which uses its high volume and wholesale membership model to obtain supplier prices that no one else can match. The second competitive advantage comes from intangible assets.

This happens when a company has a brand or patent , which keeps customers loyal and prevents competitors from taking market share . Another way to think about a brand is that it helps consumers speed up their decision-making process. Why take the risk of paying less for an unknown product when you know that a trusted brand will deliver consistent quality?

In other cases, the brand represents your values, net worth, or social status . The third competitive advantage comes from the costs of switching. This occurs when a customer is committed to a system and cannot easily switch to alternative or better competitor solutions. An example of the cost of switching is cloud infrastructure providers.

Even if your company already uploads its information to Amazon Web Services , or you keep all your family photos in Apple iCloud , would you really switch to another solution ? The fourth competitive advantage, and one of the most powerful , is network effect. This happens when a product or service becomes more valuable as more people use it .

Amazon, eBay, and Facebook are classic examples of this. So, why is competitive advantage important? For emerging markets, competitive advantage means you can gain market share and grow faster than your competitors . For proven or developed markets, competitive advantage ensures a stable position and delivers high profit margins, huge free cash flow, and attractive returns on equity .

Historically , Warren Buffett has focused on companies with proven market structures, stable competitive positions, and attractive profitability. However, many investors have also done well with businesses that have clear signs of building competitive advantages, despite a less developed market position .

Now, I'm going to share about one of my top holdings that is currently building a moat with four key competitive advantages . But first of all , remember that , recently shared, " So far this subscription has paid for itself in just 3 months. I'm excited to see what happens in the future." He's talking about Unrivaled Investing and prices are going up soon, so it's a good idea to subscribe now.

Before sharing one of my top holdings operating with four competitive advantages, it's important to remember that building a moat can be used to drive consistent massive free cash flow or enhance the ability to rapidly gain market share . These different goals depend on whether the market is developing or already established .

One of my top holdings is Sea Limited, whose ticker symbol is SE. They own 'Shopee', the number one e-commerce marketplace in many Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. By having the largest e-commerce marketplace in their areas, they benefit from a two-way network effect, where more buyers attract more sellers, which ultimately brings in more buyers .

Attracting more merchants to their platform makes it possible to offer the lowest prices to consumers , which gives them a cost advantage . They also have a strong brand , which signals that they provide a reliable experience to consumers , while also indicating that they can form partnerships with other brands that can support their growth.

For example, YouTube recently announced a partnership with Shopee. Finally, there is a platform switching cost for their users and merchants . Why buy from another platform that you don't trust ? Or if you're a merchant , why bother marketing on another platform when you already have a lot of business on the Shopee platform itself ?

Okay, let's see a summary. Warren Buffett recognized that competitive advantage is the key to successful investing. Because competitive advantages are like a moat around a castle, protecting it from competitors. For emerging companies, those competitive advantages can help drive exceptional revenue growth and capture market share.

For more developed markets, for more developed companies, it mainly depends on ensuring that you have a stable business and preventing competitors from quickly stealing your market or profits . So, Warren Buffett focuses more on such types of businesses . This is related to very high profit margins or significant free cash flow and a very high return on equity .

So, when you see faster sales growth than competitors or a very high return on equity and huge free cash flow , it could be a sign that you are looking at a company with strong competitive advantages that you should investigate further . There are four types of competitive advantages: cost advantage, intangible assets, network effect, and switching cost.

So, these are the four types that trigger some of the financial results that we just discussed. I personally used this competitive advantage knowledge when Sea Limited shares fell, and I thought, "Wow, Shopee has these four, " so I told Unrivaled Investing subscribers at about $40 per share, "I think it has these four, so their Shopee platform can recover over time."
