01. peter lynch is one of the most successful investors of all time as manager of the magellan fund at fidelity investments he actually beat the market multiple times including the prestigious s p 500 if you would have invested a thousand dollars in 1977 it would have been worth over twenty eight thousand dollars in nineteen ninety in addition if you would invested ten thousand dollars it would have been worth over a quarter of a million dollars peter lynch is a firm believer that private investors such as you and me can actually beat the market and we have many advantages over the guys at wall street so in this video i'm gonna reveal peter lynch's 20 rules for investment success from his best-selling book beating the street this was the follow-on from the popular book one up on wall street despite the book being written in 1994 the points in it are still relevant today by the end of this video you should have digested this to steal wisdom from one of the greatest investors of all time helping you to be more successful beat the market and become financially free so that being said let's dive in yeah yeah yeah coming in yeah i just wanna whe number 20 investing can be fun exciting but also dangerous if you don't do any work i see this so many times i see people just investing into stocks just for the frills without researching the companies in detail now this is a dangerous game to play and as peter lynch says it's like playing poker without looking at your cards coming in at number 19 is invest in companies that you understand warren buffett calls this your circle of competence know what you know and know what you don't know and then invest in what you know it's as simple as that i see so many people investing into crazy up-and-coming biotech companies without fully understanding exactly what the company does when you're more likely to get better returns investing into a company such as netflix amazon or even dunkin donuts which is one of peter lynch's most popular investments because you just know what these companies do and you know how they make money this brings me neatly onto point 18 know how the business makes money know what drives the businesses growth and understand its business model for example you know apple makes its money by selling its products but it also has a line of services visa makes its money by taking a small portion of every single transaction used with one of its cards understanding this can help you to understand where the company is going to grow and what can go wrong comment number 17 is observe the masses and do the opposite this is contrarian investing 101 and as peter lynch says only dead fish follow the stream he is a firm believer that wall street institutions have a great herd mentality in addition groups of individual investors can also show this herd mentality the idea is to watch this and do the opposite herd mentality can result in major bubbles from bitcoin to tulips and holland and even housing bubbles looking at the graph of a bubble you can see that it takes off then there's a first sell-off media attention enthusiasm greed delusion new age denial return to normal fear and then capitulation and despair as many many people lose massive amounts of money as you can see here the smart money gets in early followed by the institutional investors and then the public on to rule 16 in the short term the stock market is a voting machine in the long term it is a weigh machine in the short term the stock price of a company can fluctuate massively but in the long term it should increase if the company's fundamentals are also increasing as peter lynch says this disparity between the stock price and the fundamentals of the company is the key to making money and as the great investor benjamin graham says the intelligent investors shouldn't ignore mr market instead you should do business with him but only to the extent that it serves your interests on to rule 15 know what you own and why you own it now this sounds like common sense but i see so many times where you ask someone why do you own that company and they can't explain it to you in simple terms this is a worrying sign because if you don't understand why you own the company then you won't understand why it goes down you understand when to buy more you won't understand when to sell is the company a cyclical such as automotive or oil is it slow grower is it a fast grower is it the best in its industry does it have a competitive advantage does it have a moat around it these are all things that you need to know about the business on to rule 14 owning stocks is like having children never have more than you can handle peter lynch recommends the part-time stock picker not follow any more than eight to 12 companies as he will lose concentration and not be able to know that much in detail about them all now i must admit i've broke this rule so many times in my portfolio i've currently got around 40 stocks which is diversified and great for safety however in terms of pure growth it's not the best so in the future i plan to sell off a lot of these stocks and reinvest into a few exceptional companies on to rule 13 if you can't find a good deal wait patiently i followed this rule in 2019 recognizing that the market was overvalued and it been on a ballroom for over 10 years i thought there has to be a crash coming very very soon although this was timing the market i felt it was necessary in order to find a great deal and when the crash came in 2020 i unloaded about 50k into stocks warren buffett calls this a no-call strike from baseball as you can just wait for the pitches and you don't have to swing in securities business you literally every day have thousands of the major american corporations offered you uh at a price and a price that changes daily and you don't have to make any decisions you have to make nothing is forced upon you so you there are no called strikes in the business the pitcher just stands there and throws balls at you and uh if you're playing real baseball and it's between the knees and the shoulders you either swing or you've got a strike call and you have to get too many calls i know you're out in the securities business you sit there and they throw a u.s steel at 25 and they throw general motors at 68.

02. you don't have to swing at any of them they may be wonderful pitches to swing at but if you don't know enough you don't have to swing and you can sit there and watch thousands of pitches and finally get one right there where you want it something that you understand and then you swing on to rule number 12 always check the finances of the company and most importantly the balance sheet the balance sheet includes the company's assets and its liabilities so what you need to check for is that the company doesn't have more debt than cash flow and that is extremely important a vital metric i use to check this is the current ratio which is the short-term assets to the short-term liabilities this checks that the company has enough cash on hand to cover its short-term debts be very aware of companies which have very high debts and very low cash on to number 11 avoid hot stocks in hot industries instead look for great stocks in cold non-growth industries one of peter lynch's favorite examples of this is burial companies and one of the great stocks he invested in was corporation international an aggregator of funeral homes these have achieved a 19 annual earnings growth and very steady increase as like it or not people are always dying and someone will need to bury them it's not a nice thing to think about but that's what puts off many investors another interesting example of this which i come up with personally is imagine a company which picks up roadkill now it's a horrible industry depressing sad and just squirmish you don't really want to get involved in it but imagine they are the number one company for picking up roadkill across the us and they they've got monopoly on the market they've got competitive advantage they've got great sales growth and they've got a great brand now that's a great company by all metrics but many investors will be put off because of the industry and that is where you can not follow the herd and invest into companies such as these and you'll be rewarded handsomely another example is a company which does something dull for example crown cork and steel did nothing but make cans and bottle caps very dull stuff but the company's financial performance was far from dull on to rule 10 invest in the best companies in a troubled industry if you're going to invest in a troubled industry to take advantage of those low prices you need to invest in the best companies an example where i use this rule was during the 2020 stock market crash so during the 2020 crash there was of course a lockdown of the entire planet travel restrictions were implemented worldwide and thus oil prices dropped due to the lack of demand and excess supply so i understand that it was a difficult industry to invest into there was a lot of fear-mongering going on and oil prices even went negative for a period so i analyzed the entire industry i recognized that there were a lot of smaller companies that were very highly leveraged and thus extremely risky so instead i invested into the greatest brands i invested into shell bp and chevron these companies had low debt and were well diversified to weather this storm thanks to this insight i was rewarded handsomely and the stock was nearly up by 40 within just two weeks now it's up by over 70 percent on to rule number nine in every industry the observant investor can find great companies long before these big wall street institutions this is so true as these big wall street institutions only invest in large market cap companies they will very rarely touch a very small company so this is where you as a private investor can get involved for example an old saying on wall street used to be no one ever got fired for investing into ibm this is because it was a safe option even if the performance was not as good as many people expected on to rule number eight stock market declines are like the weather they will come and go you will see blizzards you will see storms but there will always be sunny days in the future this is just something that you have to be aware of when investing don't expect it always to be sunny blizzards will come and that is the time to buy this brings me neatly onto rule number seven be emotionally strong don't follow the herd and sell out of fear anger or even purchase at agreed you need to be emotionally strong and disciplined sell only because the company's fundamentals are deteriorating not because of negative news forecasts the news is always negative so don't expect anything different on to rule number six nobody can predict the future and in the words of the great john kenneth galbraith there are two types of forecasters those that don't know and those that don't know they don't know no one can predict the future of the economy interest rates or even the stock market on to rule number five long shots almost always miss the mark if there's a gold rush sell shovels take the low risk high reward option not the high risk high reward option on to rule number four invest into exceptional companies then time is on your side for example a thousand dollars investing in amazon in 1997 will be worth nearly a quarter of a million dollars today on to rule number three if you don't have time invest into index funds we've all been there we've not got enough time to research stocks thoroughly and we think okay i still want to get involved in the market then invest into index funds the vanguard s p 500 etf the vanguard ftse 100 etf there's so many great etfs out there now we have a full video on those including a super index fund which you can just invest in and leave your cash so i'll leave that on the link below on to rule number two invest internationally in high growth emerging markets ironically when peter lynch wrote this book in 1997 the us was ranked eighth on the best performing markets in the world these days you may think things have changed but they've not it's actually got worse so according to morningstar the best performing market in 2019 was actually russia which saw a market return of 39.2 the 10 best markets were russia greece ireland netherlands switzerland taiwan canada new zealand egypt and denmark which all gave a better market return than the us i believe this is due to the high valuation in the u.s market looking at the cape ratio we can see that the u.s is mostly in red this means that it's most highly valued at the moment and you can see russia is the lowest valued places in the middle such as the uk are slightly less valued thus i'm optimistic about better returns in the future right guys so on to my final rule the more seeds you plant the more trees will grow so for example if you research 10 companies you might find one good deal if you research 50 you might find five now a great way of researching companies in a time efficient manner is to use a stock screener one of my favorites is stockopedia it's a great platform and each stock is given a stock rank they even had individual screeners which rank stocks based on a variety of metrics this allows you to quickly look at the market and the whole software has analyzed a lot of the companies for you so if you're interested in this platform i use it all the time myself personally now i've actually been given a link exclusive for the viewers of motivation to invest that's you guys so the people at stockopedia have actually offered me a 25 off link for any of you guys which sign up so i'll leave that in the link below i'm not sure how long it'll be available so if you're interested in checking out the stockpedia platform and seeing if it's the right fit for you then be sure to check out that link below which of peter lynch's 20 golden rules for succes i just wanna win yeah
