Sensational employment report. The labor market just delivered a big surprise, and it's much stronger than Wall Street expected. Welcome to the "Big Money Show" . With you is Cheryl Cassone and my co-hosts Lou Bazenese, Marcus Lemonis and Jackie DeAngelis. And with us during this hour—he returned. Co-host of "Big Money in the Morning" Brian Brenberg.
It's nice to be back in this home. I love what you did with this place. I like these radical changes. This gives you the opportunity to see everyone. This is just wonderful. We'll switch later. Good. We have everything prepared for you, Brian. So, here's the news, and it's big. The United States added 165,000 jobs in October.
This is more than double, almost triple, what economists predicted. And the unemployment rate dropped to 4.1%. In addition, employment growth in September was revised upward, adding 31,000 jobs. So, these numbers indicate a stable labor market. Jackie DeAngelis, start with this. What a sensational figure this morning.
That was a great indicator this morning . I think that's why we see growth on our screens today, because we're reminded again that the fundamentals of the economy are strong. You saw pretty much everything you wanted to see in this employment report, and that's not just the headline number, I'll just add that in August and September combined, jobs were up 84,000.
So we like to see these revisions going up, not down. As for manufacturing jobs , they are back. Where we saw indicators, everything was positive. That's why I'm a little disappointed with the results of this week's midterm elections , because I think this is actually a strong economy, even if people have n't felt it because of overly aggressive tariffs and the war in Iran, which has dragged on and caused gas prices to rise.
The conditions for development are there. The great, beautiful development did what it was supposed to do. Here you see exactly where jobs were created . Government—only a small increase, but we see that under this administration the public sector is shrinking, and that's a good thing. And so I think about some of the choices that were made and the timing decisions that were made, and I say to myself, "Gosh, if things were different, if those two caveats were removed, the tariff strategy could still be implemented, just maybe not as aggressively." You could still wage war on Iran, but you could end it when you promised .
And after the big beautiful bill and what we see in fundamentals and GDP growth, oh my. Marcus, there's even more good news for the average American worker and their pay, as we saw that the average hourly wage increased by 4/10ths of a percent. This was better than economists' expectations. 3.1% per annum.
This is the average earnings of American workers. So the question is whether this wage growth is starting to offset to some extent the blow that people across the country have taken due to inflation. Well, I think this shows that employers understand that to retain people, they need to pay them well.
And when there is high consumer demand, there is also high demand for workers. So me, I like this number. But I find it hard to accept that having a job automatically means being able to afford everything you need . You point out that salaries are rising, and this partially alleviates the situation, but does not solve it completely.
And that's what happened in But They Can Pay Their Bills , as Jackie likes to say, right? It's always work, you pay the bills, you buy the necessities. You can change your expenses a bit because everything has become more expensive, but for me, work is the foundation of stability that everyone needs.
And if you need a job, you will find one. That's what it's about . you can say you pay the bills, but you're still angry. Ryan, express your opinion. Ryan, please comment. Well, you, you and the team, the "Big Money in the Morning" team, covered the employment report this morning. So what surprised you all ?
Uh, we were surprised by the 165,000 jobs figure , because we were expecting something like 59 or 60 thousand, or something like that. It was a very large number. And yet, if you look at the report, everything looked good. If you dig deeper into the report, things look good. If you look at the household survey, which is a different way of measuring it, it takes entrepreneurial activity into account better .
There were about 460,000 jobs added there according to the household survey, okay? So that's a great number. Steve Moore said on the show, "God, if only this had happened last week instead of this." I don't think it would matter much for the midterm elections. My question for the future: since all of this is a look back, how willing will employers be to hire people under the new Congress compared to the previous one ?
And you know, your company...are you in growth mode right now or are you in defense mode because someone might be putting pressure on you? Tell me about it, Lee. This is an apt observation , because with the arrival of a new Congress in January, a whole new world awaits corporate America. And given that all these executives are being threatened with every possible subpoena, what do you think the corporate environment will be like?
And do you think these employment figures will hold up as we move into 2027? Yes, great questions. I think the stock market loves employment figures, so I see this as a positive for stocks. You look at the trends in the employment report, because this data is very contradictory , which surprises me.
We can't get exact data here, but we see three steady months of growth. But I think corporate CEOs are curious about what Marcus thinks about this. We are always working . I have been an entrepreneur all my life. You are always working in uncertainty, and you have to find a way to succeed. So even if a new administration comes in , is my business successful?
Do I believe I can continue to expand and grow? What does the threat of increased regulation mean for this? I don't think we should just stop and wait for what happens in Washington, because at the level of the real economy, that's impossible, right? We can't afford this at home like ordinary Americans.
So I look at the corporate outlook and I don't think it's slowing anything down. I started looking at a lot of earnings reports from data center companies. They are not slowing down at all, but they are having to adjust expectations because regulatory risk has emerged that was not there before the midterm elections.
One caveat about this employment report that we must always remember is that the data is retrospective. And look, the conditions have changed. This is the report for October, and of course November, January, and December will be completely different. But, Marcus, until you said it, we were in a "no hiring, no firing" situation.
This has been going on for several months. In 2025, when President Trump took office, we had incredible job growth. We've seen this environment change a bit this year. This is data from the past, but employer sentiment today is no worse than it was 30 or 60 days ago. And I believe that although we are unhappy with the election results, consumers are happy.
In some of these " blue" states, euphoria will reign, and people will continue to spend money. And if people continue to spend money, they will continue to hire workers. We also have this, guys, let's see what we have in technology now. Tech stocks suffered a multi-trillion dollar crash yesterday. If you just woke up, and I don't know where you are right now, you probably know what we're talking about.
Democrats are going to restrict artificial intelligence, and everyone is panicking over the newly elected governor of Texas. He's going to Don't forget to like and subscribe to the latest Fox Business news on YouTube. And full episodes of the show can now be watched on Fox One.
