Good evening, everyone. This is the KBS 7 o'clock news for Thursday, October 29 . Samsung Electronics unveiled its third-quarter earnings and shareholder return plans today.
Despite record-high performance and massive dividend payouts similar to SK Hynix, the stock price fell after the announcement due to differences in details. Reporter Kwak Woo-jin reports. Samsung Electronics 'third-quarter operating profit reached 107.4 trillion won. 99%of this, over 106 trillion won, was earned from semiconductors.
Just like SK Hynix a day earlier, it is an all-time record performance. The declaration that all products for after this year are sold out was also a carbon copy of Hynix. The 2027 HBM supply volume is already sold out, but additional requests for HBM supply increases from major clients continue to be received.
Regarding shareholder returns, which had drawn investor interest, Samsung Electronics first announced a 30 trillion won cash dividend for the third quarter. That is approximately 4,600 won per share. A scale that does not fall behind Hynix. However, it is not specific on how the remaining shareholder return funds of up to 75 trillion won will be used, excluding dividends.
They only mentioned that they would buy back and retire a significant amount of treasury shares. (Empty/Unknown content) While SK Hynix closed higher for two consecutive days following a sharp rise the previous day, Samsung Electronics rose less than Hynix yesterday and fell over 4%today. In a recent environment where liquidity in the stock market has been drying up, the market had expected some immediate stimulus measures.

The largest site is Gimpo Ara. About 37,000 units will be supplied on approximately 3.65 million square meters in the area of Gochon-eup, Gimpo.
In Guri Geonwon, 14,600 units will be built on about 1.44 million square meters in the area of Sano-dong, Guri. This site was initially planned for a logistics industrial complex but was put on hold due to lack of business viability. Hanam Misa K-Culture will supply 12,000 units, with plans to build a park utilizing the natural environment along the Han River and a K-Culture complex.
In addition, Hanam Gamil 2, adjacent to the existing Gamil District, and Uijeongbu Dawon, which includes land returned by the U.S. military, were also selected as candidates. The Goyang Daegok Knowledge Convergence District will supply an additional 4,000 units by expanding the existing site. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced it would apply the shortest-term public housing model to minimize the licensing process for these six sites and start construction by 2030 .
Land transaction permit zones, which were comprehensively designated in the Seoul metropolitan greenbelt at the time of the August 13 measures, will also be lifted except for these candidate sites . This is Lee Seul-gi for KBS News. North Korea launched a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles today.
North Korea carried out the missile provocation without responding to our proposal for military authority talks, and continues its border fortification work despite our demand to stop. Reporter Yoon Jin reports. North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea from the Wonsan area in Gangwon Province around 12:30 PM today.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that the missiles flew about 250km, and the exact specifications are being precisely analyzed by South Korea and the U.S. The military believes North Korea conducted training using various assets. There is a possibility they tested mixed tactics using cruise missiles and existing multiple rocket launchers, including the 600mm super-large multiple rocket launcher capable of carrying tactical nuclear warheads.
North Korea, which defiantly launched weapons for strikes against the South the day after the South Korean and U.S. defense ministers discussed holding the Security Consultative Meeting for the transfer of wartime operational control , has not responded to our proposal on the 23rd for talks to prevent accidental clashes near the Military Demarcation Line.
Communication channels are currently cut off, aren't they? They need to come to the dialogue table. We are continuing to urge them to do so. North Korea is also continuing its so-called border fortification work, which our military has urged them to stop. If they violate the MDM, we are implementing appropriate and justified operational measures, such as warning broadcasts and warning shots.
We are closely monitoring whether they will resume anti-South loudspeaker broadcasts this month, as threatened by Workers' Party Department Deputy Director Kim Yo-jong. As North Korea has been constantly maintaining loudspeakers in forward areas, it is known that they are in a state ready to be restarted at any time .
This is KBS News, I'm Yoon Jin. Today, the National Assembly Intelligence Committee held a closed-door audit of the National Intelligence Service. Q&A sessions were held regarding South Korea-U.S. cooperation, where unusual signs have recently been detected following North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un's visit to China.
Reporter Yoo Ji-hyang reports on the details. Chairman. Ahead of the anniversary of "Resist America, Aid Korea," Chairman Kim Jong-un made a surprise visit to Dandong , China. With Wang Ning, Chairman of the CPPCC, greeting him, diplomatic officials from both countries, including Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, were fully mobilized.
The National Intelligence Service reported to the National Assembly that North Korea may have used this occasion to convey its intentions regarding North Korea-U.S. dialogue to the Chinese leadership. If the purpose was for the anniversary, key military figures would have accompanied him, but instead, the delegation was composed primarily of diplomatic officials.
Regarding the possibility of North Korea-U.S. dialogue, they assessed that while no common ground was found on conditions for talks, the possibility of a shift in the situation before or after next month's APEC in Shenzhen, China, remains open. Regarding the recent rumors of an abnormal atmosphere in intelligence cooperation between South Korea and the U.S., NIS Director Cho Tae-yong admitted that some intelligence is being restricted due to Unification Minister Chung Dong-young's remarks on nuclear facilities.
However, he explained that there are no external restrictions, so there is no need to worry too much. Restrictions are only in a very small part, and that portion is being sufficiently supplemented by the NIS's own reconnaissance assets. Regarding the denial of U.S. visas for Democratic Party lawmaker Jin Sung-joon , the Chairman of the National Assembly National Defense Committee, and others, the NIS warned against over-interpreting , stating that U.S.

A man in his 70s who set fire to two patent law firms in Gangnam, Seoul, in succession was referred to the prosecution today. Police added charges of attempted murder , stating that the man set fire in front of the exit knowing that people were inside.
Circumstances of a premeditated crime were also revealed, such as him preparing gasoline canisters a month before the crime. This is reporter Hwang Hyun-kyu. A man enters the office carrying gasoline canisters in both hands. After talking to an employee, he pours gasoline on the floor and lights it with a lighter.
The entrance turned into a sea of flames in an instant. Employees whose escape route was blocked had to flee through the window. A 71- year-old man, surnamed Lee, who set fire to two patent law firms in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 20th, has been indicted. The reason Lee gave for the crime was that they wouldn't issue his patent certificate on paper.
They won't investigate. Where else does this happen? What kind of country is this? So, did you intend to kill all the people at the patent firm? Still... Stop talking about that. However, after it was reported by KBS that Lee had been looking for a specific employee before the crime, police added charges of attempted murder to the original charges of arson resulting in injury to an occupied building.
Police determined that the intent to commit murder was evident, noting that he set fire to the only exit while knowing people were inside. Circumstances suggesting Lee premeditated the crime have also emerged. Lee had prepared a container of gasoline a month before the crime and canceled his mobile phone five days prior.
He also arranged his housing contract to end on the day of the crime and remarked to those around him that there shouldn't be any "family trouble" if one is defrauded. A total of 26 people were injured by the fire Lee started. The police have decided to disclose Lee's identity on the 3rd of next month .
This is KBS News, Hwang Hyun-kyu. A Korean criminal organization based in Vietnam that committed 8 billion won in phishing fraud has been caught by police . They impersonated prosecutors or court officials, primarily targeting young people in their 20s and 30s with little social experience. This is reporter Lee Hyun-guan.
Men are kneeling between desks partitioned by dividers. These are members of a Korean criminal organization that ran a phishing scam locally in Vietnam. They carried out the crime meticulously by dividing roles. First, they impersonated court officials to lure victims into accessing fake websites, then stole their personal and financial information.
" Enter it, and then we will appear." This ...... is handed over to another member who acts as a fake prosecutor, isolating victims in accommodations under the pretext of "temporary protection measures.""I am a formal prosecutor in charge of the team for Case No. 84." In ...... this process, they forced victims to buy new phones and install remote-control apps to block outside contact, psychologically dominating them by making them read fake arrest warrants aloud.
" Please.""I will leave the audio recording.""Seoul District Police... Prosecutors 'Office...Read it slowly and clearly." Once this process was finished , they impersonated Financial Supervisory Service officials to force victims to transfer virtual assets and withdraw cash. The amount they swindled using this method over the past two years is 8.1 billion won.
There are over 100 victims. It was confirmed that 93%of them were young people in their 20s and 30s who are just starting their careers. Reaching up to 1 billion won... Police have apprehended 54 people and arrested 37 on charges including violation of the Telecommunications Fraud Damage Refund Act and organization of a criminal group.
We also secured 850 million won of criminal proceeds for preservation before indictment. This is Lee Hyun-gwan for KBS News. The 4th anniversary memorial ceremony for the victims of the Itaewon tragedy was held today at Gwanghwamun Square. The bereaved families appealed for the truth of the tragedy to be revealed and for a safer world to be built.
For the first time in four years since the tragedy, the president also attended. Here is reporter Yoo Min's report. The 4th anniversary memorial ceremony for the Itaewon tragedy began at 10:29 AM. The total number of victims is now 162, with three more added this year. The bereaved families made a promise once again to those they lost four years ago.
" Dad will do his absolute best to clearly uncover the circumstances and the process that led to you having to go there." They repeatedly urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the truth. "We cannot accept the reality of being unable to answer why it wasn't prevented and why they weren't saved." Attending for the first time since the tragedy, the president bowed his head to the families who have fought a lonely battle.
" I offer my deepest condolences and sympathy to all the bereaved families." Steps of citizens continued all day in the alleyways of Itaewon, hoping that no one will ever be unfairly sacrificed due to the state's absence or neglect. Shops prepared chrysanthemums for mourners, and citizens honored the victims by leaving flowers and notes.
" They are about the same age as my child , and I felt so sorry that I couldn't even hug them once, so I came because I wanted to visit at least once." "I hope another tragedy never happens again." The Special Investigation Commission on the Itaewon Tragedy has had its activities extended until September next year, and a joint government investigation team was also launched last month.
This is Lee Yoo-min for KBS News. This year's Halloween is the day after tomorrow, Saturday. With it being the weekend and a significant increase in foreign tourists, crowds are expected to flock to various parts of Seoul. Local governments plan to put their full efforts into safety management, including deploying AI CCTV and drones.
Reporter Lee Se reports. Pumpkin dolls, the symbol of Halloween, have been hung up at restaurants. Ahead of Saturday's Halloween, the major busy streets in Seoul are already looking lively. With a large increase in foreign tourists this year, more people are expected to gather. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has designated the four days from tomorrow to Sunday as an intensive management period to prevent crowd accidents.
Eight areas, including Itaewon, Hongdae, Myeong-dong, and Seongsu-dong, have been designated as key management zones where on-site situation rooms will be operated . Around 360 AI CCTVs capable of identifying and alerting on crowd density will also be deployed. It is classified as "congested" if there is more than one person per square meter, and "very congested" if there are 1.3 or more.
For Itaewon, which experienced a crowd disaster, we plan to control alleyways and subway station entrances when the crowd reaches a "very congested" level, and may have subway trains pass through without stopping depending on the situation. When it reaches a high-congestion level, we will fully block six alleyways to restrict access, aiming to reduce the level of congestion .
On Halloween, vehicle traffic will be completely blocked on Itaewon-ro, and one lane will be closed on Hongdae Street. The Seoul Metropolitan Government will monitor real-time congestion based on mobile carrier base station signals and plans to deploy drones over Hongdae, Seongsu-dong, and Gangnam Station to identify bottleneck areas.
I’m Lee Se-hyun, reporting for KBS News . The special counsel team has again requested the death penalty in the appellate trial for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is on trial for leading an insurrection in connection with the December 3 martial law. The special counsel team led by Cho Eun-seok requested the death penalty during the appellate trial for former President Yoon and others held today at the Seoul High Court.
The special counsel team defined the emergency martial law as a "pro-regime coup" to secure long-term power, arguing that the previous lower court ruling had been too lenient by narrowly interpreting the timing and purpose of the insurrection. The National Assembly held a government audit of the Presidential Secretariat and the National Security Office today.
From the start of the audit, the ruling and opposition parties clashed over issues such as work reports and witness testimony, and engaged in a war of nerves over matters like South Korea-U.S . relations. Reporter Yeo So’s report follows. The National Assembly’s government audit of the Presidential Secretariat began with clashes between the ruling and opposition parties.
" Keep the work report brief.""Maintain your decorum." Shouting broke out. Yes. Fourth. The chairman’s proceedings were even more intense. During the formal questioning, the opposition party began by pressing on the recent state of South Korea-U.S. relations. They pointed out that information sharing between the two countries has been limited, joint exercises have been reduced, and problems have emerged within the alliance.
" Don't act unilaterally; you don't even talk to us or give us a reason. Is this really an alliance?" "Regarding whether or not we are effectively managing joint forces and deterrence, there are no issues." The ruling party countered that the government is responding appropriately to North Korean provocations, such as by test-firing supersonic missiles.
They reaffirmed that the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) is also being pushed forward under South Korea-U.S. coordination. " Isn't it obvious that without ironclad South Korea-U.S. coordination, there can be no transfer of wartime operational control?" "Even after the transfer, there will be no errors in joint forces, and it will be under solid coordination."
The opposition party insisted that responsibility must be determined regarding who decided to introduce single-stock leveraged ETFs. This " Isn't it true that responsibility must be uncovered?""The introduction of single-stock leveraged ETFs was decided at a Blue House meeting, and..." The ruling party defended that sensitive policies, such as increasing medical school admissions, are being decided through sufficient discussion, unlike the previous administration.
Establishing a public forum to conduct transparent discussions based on objective data, the parliamentary audit faced repeated adjournments due to clashes between ruling and opposition parties over the participation of People Power Party lawmaker Kim Tae-kyu, who had previously stated that Chun Doo-hwan and Yoon Suk-yeol’s actions did not constitute an insurrection.
This is KBS News, I'm Yeo So-hyun. The government has released, for the first time, the results of testing 46 types of harmful substances in all tobacco products sold domestically. Several harmful substances, including formaldehyde, a Group 1 carcinogen, were identified in both conventional and electronic cigarettes.
Reporter Jeon Hyun-woo reports. Until now, cigarette packs only disclosed the levels of tar and nicotine , while only listing the names of six carcinogenic substances such as arsenic and cadmium. To address these limitations, the Tobacco Harmful Component Management Act was enacted, and today the government disclosed the results of its testing for 46 harmful tobacco components for the first time.
The testing covered 465 products currently sold in Korea, including conventional cigarettes, heat-not-burn electronic cigarettes, and liquid-type electronic cigarettes. Through systematic verification and public disclosure of harmful tobacco components, the government aims to raise public awareness regarding these dangers .
The results showed that nicotine and tar were detected in all conventional cigarette products, along with various carcinogens such as formaldehyde, benzene, and arsenic. In heat-not-burn electronic cigarettes, ammonia and acetone were detected alongside nicotine and tar. Liquid-type electronic cigarettes were also found to contain harmful substances, including nicotine, acetone, and glycerin.
In particular, formaldehyde, a Group 1 carcinogen, was detected in almost all products regardless of the cigarette type. Regarding these test results, the government warned that a lower detection level of harmful substances in a specific product should not be interpreted as the product being less harmful.
It has been confirmed that one must not be misled into thinking that these figures suggest lower risk, given the fact that about 7,000 chemicals and over 70 types of carcinogens exist. The government plans to expand the scope of harmful component testing to include smokeless tobacco and water pipes in the future.
This is KBS News, Jeon Hyun-woo . Tesla owners have lost a lawsuit filed against Tesla Korea claiming that the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature has not been provided for years. The court ruled that Tesla has provided a significant portion of the features included in the FSD option, and that the owners entered into the contracts knowing that it would take a considerable amount of time for the features to be fully implemented.
Reporter Shin Hyun-wook reports. In the lawsuit filed by Tesla owners alleging that the Full Self-Driving ( FSD) option has not been implemented for years, the court has ruled in favor of Tesla. The Seoul Central District Court ruled against the 89 plaintiffs today in the lawsuit filed by Tesla owners against Tesla Korea for a refund of their purchase price.
Car owners previously filed a lawsuit demanding a refund for the "Full Self-Driving" option, claiming Tesla began selling it in 2017 but has yet to implement it. In response, Tesla argued that they have already provided a significant portion of the features included in the FSD option, such as Autopilot and automatic parking.
The court first ruled that the FSD option does not mean a Level 5 fully automated function capable of driving without a driver. It also determined that Tesla cannot be seen as failing to fulfill its obligations simply because Level 5 functions have not been applied. The owners have already been provided with features included in the FSD option, such as Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot .
Furthermore, Tesla recently distributed an "FSD Lite" version, which added traffic light and sign recognition functions even to older vehicles. The court also judged that the FSD option is a feature Tesla promised to provide upon regulatory approval or technological advancement, and that owners purchased it knowing it would take a considerable amount of time.
This is KBS News, Shin Hyun-wook reporting. A man has been arrested by police for habitually extorting settlement money by intentionally crashing his bicycle into slow-moving taxis. This man was a former taxi driver himself. He exploited the psychology of drivers who avoid official accident reports due to concerns over penalty points.
KBS reporter Park Eun-young reports. A bicycle slowly approaches a taxi that is driving at a low speed. As soon as the bike touches the car, the man on the bicycle sits down on the ground. Three months ago, at the same location and with the same individual, he rode his bike directly at the taxi as if he had been waiting for it.
I dropped off a passenger and was pulling out when he appeared. He came up and hit the side of the car, then just fell down right in front of me . The only target the man chose was taxis . The man committed these crimes near crosswalks or side roads, targeting taxis when they slowed down. As a former taxi driver, this man in his 60s knew the drivers' weaknesses better than anyone.
He exploited the fact that an accident record or penalty points would hurt their livelihood, demanding cash settlements instead of police reports or insurance claims. Through this method, he extorted over 1 million won in settlement money on 11 separate occasions. This was not the man's first time committing such a crime.
He did it on purpose. He had previously been sentenced to prison for the same charge, but after his release, he took his bicycle back out onto the streets. Reporting it to the police is the best course of action. Then the perpetrator won't get money and run away, and data will be accumulated so they can definitely be punished next time.
The police have arrested the man on fraud charges and referred him to the prosecution. This is KBS News, Park Eun-young. A man in his 30s has been arrested for allegedly murdering a Japanese woman in her 20s with a weapon at an officetel in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, and then fleeing the scene.
It has been determined that the man prepared the weapon in advance and discarded some of the crime tools while on the run. Reporter Han Sol reports. In an alleyway in Cheonan, paramedics rush into a building, followed closely by patrol cars. Around 4:30 PM yesterday, a man in his 30s, identified as A, murdered a woman in her 20s, B, at an officetel and fled the scene.
I saw police blocking the area. I was startled wondering what was happening; it seemed like many people arrived and were moving around busily. It is reported that an acquaintance who heard B scream during a phone call just before the crime visited the officetel, discovered the body, and called 119. The Japanese victim, B, reportedly entered the country this month and had been staying at an acquaintance's officetel.
After committing the crime here, A fled and was captured by police about eight hours later. He was apprehended at a motel in Jeonju , North Jeolla Province, over 100km away from the crime scene. Police investigation revealed that the two had met twice this year, but they were not in a romantic relationship, and there was no history of stalking reports .
It is reported that A stated he intended to take his own life after a failed stock investment and planned a double suicide with the victim, whom he knew. However, police are continuing their investigation, focusing on the fact that A prepared the weapon in advance and discarded some of the tools while fleeing to Jeonju.
The police plan to request an arrest warrant for A and uncover the exact motive through an autopsy and digital forensics of his mobile phone. This is KBS News, Han Sol. In Japan, prolonged rain and warm weather have led to a bountiful pine mushroom harvest, but poisonous mushrooms are also growing, requiring caution.
Highly toxic "poison fire-coral fungi" are easily found right next to the hiking trails of Mt. Takao, a famous tourist spot in Tokyo. Merely touching this mushroom can cause skin inflammation, and ingesting it can lead to vomiting, fever, and, in severe cases , death. Recently, some people have been using AI to identify poisonous mushrooms , but experts warn that one should never rely on it blindly.
Meanwhile, the habitat areas for poisonous mushrooms are also expanding. This poisonous mushroom, known as the " white reed mushroom," typically grows in tropical and subtropical regions but has recently been found in park lawns and roadsides. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare strongly advises against picking or eating any mushrooms that are difficult to identify as edible.

The backlash over the police search and seizure of a pediatric emergency room is growing, with doctors at the Ajou University Hospital pediatric emergency center expressing their intention to resign en masse.
With concerns over medical service gaps emerging, high-ranking police officials visited the hospital today to hold a private meeting with the hospital director and the center head. This is reporter Jang Hyuk-jin. This is the pediatric emergency medical center at Ajou University Hospital. On the 27th, seven specialists, including the head of the center, expressed their intention to resign.
The incident was triggered by the death of an infant who was receiving emergency treatment for cyanosis three months ago. CPR was performed for over 60 minutes, and despite the medical team's best efforts during the cardiac arrest, the parents filed a complaint, leading the police to raid the active emergency room on the 30th of last month.
The hospital demanded an apology, claiming the raid hindered patient care and treated doctors like criminals, but the police merely expressed regret, stating it was an inevitable investigation. I truly feel sorry for the pain experienced by the medical staff and the inconvenience caused to the patients.
In the end, the medical staff protested by expressing their intention to resign en masse. Please do not quit. They pleaded. They say their hands are shaking and they cannot provide care under the jurisdiction of the police agency. As the controversy grew, high-ranking police officials visited Ajou University Hospital this afternoon for a private meeting with the hospital director and the head of the pediatric emergency center.
The police reportedly expressed regret again, but specific details of the meeting, such as whether an apology was made or what further measures will be taken, have not been confirmed. The hospital was cautious in its response, stating that the specialists have not yet actually submitted their resignation letters.
There are only 14 pediatric emergency centers nationwide, and if a service vacuum becomes a reality at Ajou University Hospital, which serves the southern Gyeonggi region, the chaos could escalate. The Korean Society of Pediatric Emergency Medicine has announced a press conference for tomorrow, calling for an apology from the police and the establishment of guidelines for emergency room investigations.
This is KBS News, Jang Hyuk-jin. The work to re-carve the Tripitaka Koreana, or the "80,000 Tripitaka," which is a national treasure and a UNESCO Memory of the World, has begun for the first time in 800 years. It is expected to take as long as a century to hand-carve over 80,000 wooden printing blocks with dedication.
This is reporter Jo Mi-ryeong. Characters carefully transferred onto the wooden blocks. As the carving knife passes, each stroke becomes clear. Monks and trainees bow three times for every single character they complete. They are continuing the dedication of the Goryeo artisans from 800 years ago by re-carving the 80,000 Tripitaka.
The Tripitaka Koreana at Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon is a national treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site; each block is 4cm thick, and if all 81,252 blocks were stacked, they would be taller than Mount Paektu. Over 10 National Intangible Cultural Heritage master carvers have been passing on traditional carving techniques to about 670 people, including monks, for the past three years.
Compared to that time, our tools and techniques today may be even better. Even if we are slow, we aim to do it perfectly. The key is not just to remake the printing blocks, but to carry on the spirit of ascetic practice as well. If the Goryeo people prayed for the peace of the nation 800 years ago, today we aspire for world peace and the preservation of life.
One might make many and make them beautifully, but there is no sense of direction toward the future of the Earth or humanity that we wish for. Around Haeinsa Temple, birch and wild pear trees used for woodblocks will be planted, and a Tripitaka town will be built for engraving education and exhibitions.
