Honestly, what I'm hearing in the industry doesn't go much beyond what Aean has already laid out. Binance's stated position is that it will fully compensate users for their losses, and it has a track record of honoring commitments like that in the past. Given the company's substantial reserves and profits, I think it has the capacity to follow through. Until it actually does, though, I can't be certain. Still, when I talk with peers across the industry, there's high confidence that Binance will make users whole in practice. We'll have to wait and see.
Bitcoin is built on blockchain and is widely regarded as very secure, so it may sound ironic to talk about a $6.3 billion hack. There are reports that North Korean hackers were responsible. How do you explain that?
Yes, that's right. Crypto sits on the front lines of cyberattacks. This attack was state-level, and roughly $6 billion was taken. But the industry froze about half of it quickly, and I think that's a sign the industry is maturing. The fact that Binance can fully compensate its users points the same way. Ten years ago, an event like this could have ended Binance altogether. That isn't the case now. Five years ago, institutions didn't have ETFs that let them invest more safely; now they do. A few years ago, there wasn't even talk of bringing this kind of trading into regulated US markets. The industry has come a long way, and there is clearly further to go.
The important point is that all users will be compensated, and this incident did not breach the underlying blockchain or the cold-storage custody methods used by institutions. I think users of these solutions can continue to feel secure.
If Bitcoin fell today because of this hack, as Mel just said, isn't this a criticism of Binance rather than Bitcoin?
This hack has nothing to do with Bitcoin. Bitcoin's basic use and utility are unchanged. Would you agree that's a fair way to put it?
Yes, I think that's a fair way to put it. The underlying blockchain was not hacked, and neither the assets held in ETFs nor individual users' cold wallets were compromised. This was a conventional cybersecurity breach, carried out through social engineering. It's unfortunate, but it's good that users will be compensated. I also think much of today's decline reflects broader risk-off sentiment, not just this hack: the Nasdaq fell 3% and Intel dropped 30%. In that kind of environment, crypto tends to pull back. But you're right that this doesn't change Bitcoin's long-term direction. I'd expect prices to recover from this shock within a week or so. Historically, hacks have rarely had a lasting effect on long-term price trends, and I expect that to hold this time too.
