09. so you're getting it a little bit below its three-year average again. Are you worried about Google going out of business? I'm not saying put all your eggs in one basket. I'm simply saying this is how to keep it simple, and it's okay to be boring. It's trading below its three-year average on its forward P/E, about 20 percent higher than the market's 21, yet it's blown out earnings and revenue growth. Because of all the strength on its balance sheet, it has the optionality. Its margins are huge, and it can do whatever it wants. Think about investing during tougher, inflationary times—that's what I want to get across. Hopefully we can provide a lot of value to investors by thinking about that. Tougher times, more difficult environments, are coming. Inflation is a huge shift from the last several years in markets, and that's going to funnel down through the markets. But you can still make a lot of money. I don't want to say it's easy, and it may sound arrogant, but you can make a lot of money off boring businesses. To your point, unless you're an economist or overthinking it, you can put yourself in a great position to benefit.

10. Yeah, and Dave, when you compare this to the '80s and where inflation was, it's a different time. In the '80s you were looking at high double-digit inflation, but you know what the savings rate was? Eight or nine percent. That's pretty cool. So if you have money in the bank, higher rates are good. Your banks' margins are going to expand, and insurance companies benefit too. Even oil companies do well, and that's maybe not so much a function of interest rates as of supply and demand. So things do work in this environment. But now you're looking at rates skyrocketing, and let's see what happens with savings rates. Inflation was still negative, and people fail to mention that. In the '80s, getting a mortgage at 18 percent, or whatever it was in the early '80s—but your savings rate, eight or nine percent, is pretty cool. Not to mention, we're not huge bond guys, but if interest rates spike and you could park money in something and earn eight percent, why would you not? We love stocks, and we'll always find great stocks like that. But we'll be the first to tell you: go buy a CD for three years, earn eight percent annually, and stop compounding money? It doesn't matter what vehicle you use.

11. Listen, if you look back at history, it's been value, then sometimes growth, value, sometimes growth. Since the credit crisis it's been a pure growth market, with growth stocks just outperforming. That's fine, because interest rates were super low and there was more money in the system. Now you're seeing the transition into value. It's not a transition out of the market completely—the S&P isn't getting smoked—but certain areas are getting smoked, so you have to be careful. When you mentioned the stock being boring, to the point where people know it—when you see the story and the video for CRA that comes out today, it's very exciting, because this is a company that's growing tremendously. It trades at a much cheaper valuation than the overall market, yet it's competing with, and right now taking market share from, NVIDIA, an $800 billion company. Seeing this company at that valuation was remarkable, but more importantly, they're paying a dividend. Dividends are going to come into play, and they're going to be huge. If you're paying a nice yield and have lots of free cash flow, you're buying back your stock. You're going to see massive buybacks. A lot of these companies have a lot of cash on their balance sheets, and buybacks are good. Look at where the market is—the S&P is up three percent off its highs. All the companies that brought back their stock over how many years, on average it was a great buy. Apple buys back its stock, and a lot of these guys buy back their stock. That reduces shares outstanding and increases your ownership percentage. You're seeing that benefit from these companies, and lots and lots of buybacks are going to come over the next year. You're probably going to see record buybacks this year, which is going to put a floor under some of these companies.

12. That means be careful buying high-growth names that are expected to grow massively over five to seven years—ESG companies, marijuana companies, EV companies. Tesla is going to get away with it; it's fine, they're still growing, and Tesla is the only company out there really with a car on the road. All these others are coming. Let's see if they come and how they do on the manufacturing side and getting these things out. I still don't know how they're going to do that within the timeframe they're expected—12 to 18 months. A lot of these companies have growth models that run really, really far out, and they're not worrying about earnings. They just say, "We're going to see sales growth, but we're going to report huge losses." Those are the ones getting hit hardest right now, because it's not going to be as easy to borrow money or raise money. Capital is going to get harder to come by as you see higher rates and less easy monetary policy. But that's what's going on now. It's more of a shift in allocation, not "run for the exits." A lot of you are probably sitting on companies that are down 35 to 40 percent, that just got wrecked, especially if you're a little aggressive. Those are the same companies that were probably up 300 percent off their lows during COVID. So you have to look at it that way. Well, doesn't that depend on when you bought? Tell that to the people who bought recently and are down. I know. That's the world we live in.
