01. I will never buy gold again. Read that headline again. Because the quotes do all the main work here. And if you ignore them, you will misunderstand this video. I still own gold. I have more of it than most people watching this right now. What I'm done with is what they sell you as "gold," when in reality it's just a claim, a promise , a piece of paper backed by another piece of paper, backed by another.

02. And somewhere at the very bottom of that pile, maybe, if you're lucky, there's a real bullion in storage that you'll never see. I spent 40 years in the markets learning the difference between owning something and owning a receipt for something. Today I'm going to show you exactly where this line is in the gold market, because almost no one explains it to you.

03. And the stock companies are definitely not going to talk about it voluntarily. Before we begin, I have to get this straight. What I'm about to tell you is something I've learned over decades, having made a few costly mistakes. And I'm giving it to you for free. All get distracted. Until the algorithm buried this video.

04. Not because I need numbers for my ego, no, but because this channel only exists because of those who benefit from it and stay with us . So sign up now. And then go back to the video. It doesn't cost you anything, but it can save you a lot. Let's start with the word itself, because problems begin with words.

05. When most people say "I own gold," they are actually referring to a line item in a brokerage statement that changes roughly in line with the price of gold. This is not the same as owning gold, and the distance between these two statements is where enormous risk lies. I want you to imagine it this way.

06. Imagine you don't own a house. You own a piece of paper that says you have the right to a portion of a house that is managed by one company, maintained by another, and audited once a year by a third, and each of them takes a commission, and all of them stand between you and the actual bricks. This is not a house.

07. This is the right to a house. And in 99% of cases, this difference doesn't matter at all , because no one checks it. This right behaves just like a house would behave. It moves with the market. It seems reliable. Everyone treats him like he's real. But the real reason you bought gold in the first place , if you're honest with yourself, is for that 1% of the time when everything stops working as usual.

08. And it is at this point that the right to an asset and the real asset cease to be one and the same. I got hold of the official documents of the world's largest gold fund, the same one that's probably sitting in half of your retirement accounts right now. And I want to read you one sentence from there, because I had to reread it three times before I believed what was written.

09. The fund's own documents state that it is constantly selling off some of its gold reserves to cover its own operating expenses. Let that sink in for a second. This is not a robbery. Nobody is committing fraud. It's written in black and white, completely legal, fully disclosed—and almost no one reads it.

10. This means that each year that you own the shares, the actual amount of metal behind each share becomes slightly less. Quietly, constantly, forever. When this fund first launched, each share was backed by about one- tenth of an ounce. Today, it is provided with a noticeably smaller share, and the commission continues to "bite off" a piece year after year , as if it were a very polite form of erosion.

11. No one tells you that gold is one of the few assets on the planet that is not subject to growth, and at the same time, the instrument you bought to store it is quietly reducing your share every year. This is not a small print flaw. That's the whole business model. Now here's the second thing that should worry you .

12. Try to get your hands on the metal itself. Well , try it. Most of these large funds will tell you somewhere around page 100 that physical metal redemption is only available to a small group of authorized participants. To the largest banks in the world and only in blocks of tens of millions of dollars.

13. You or I, with normal account sizes, can't just come and ask for our gold. We can only sell our shares to someone else who also does not want to receive the metal. This is not just a technical detail. That's the whole point. It was created for ease of trade, not for delivery. It perfectly allows you to speculate on the price of gold in one click without the hassle of storage.

14. It does not fulfill the function of securing a claim that you could actually come and collect. These are two completely different products with the same word written on their labels. And then there's the chain of custody, and that's what keeps me up at night more than the commission itself. The Fund stores its gold in a depository bank.

15. This custodian has the right, in accordance with the fund rules, to transfer part of the assets to sub-custodians in other locations. In its risk disclosure, the fund itself acknowledges that its ability to inspect, monitor, or take legal action on gold that lies several levels down the chain is limited.

16. So, follow the actual chain of ownership with me. You own the stock. A share represents a claim to the trust. The trust has a right of claim against the custodian. The custodian could transfer some of the assets to someone else. Somewhere under all these papers, there's probably a metal ingot in storage.

17. This ingot doesn't know your name. And he will never know. You are separated by five or six levels from what you thought belonged to you. And each of these levels is a place where something can happen that has nothing to do with the price of gold. If you want to know how subtle it all gets when you leave the shiny ETF and enter the broader paper market, look at futures exchanges.

18. The amount of gold actually registered and available for delivery on the main exchange is only a small fraction of the total paper claims. I have seen this ratio go down to less than half. In some years, much less. This means that most people who have a “paper” gold position will never, under any circumstances, be able to obtain the metal because it simply isn’t available in that quantity.

19. Everyone is happy with this as long as everyone wants to get their gold at the same time. This is the main lesson of every financial panic I have experienced in my career. There is always more paper than real assets, and no one notices it until that one day when it becomes important. And on that day it becomes critically important.

20. So, let's talk about a real list of options, because I do n't want you to come away thinking that the problem is the gold itself. Gold is not a problem. The problem is in the "wrapper". There are four real ways to access investments, and I want to evaluate them honestly, including one that almost no one talks about—I'll leave it for later because it deserves a separate explanation.

21. The first way is an index fund, ETF, the same ticker that is now in most portfolios. I just spent a few minutes telling you what's wrong with him, so I won't repeat myself. But let me be fair to him too. For pure price access, it's cheap. This is liquid. You can buy and sell it in seconds. And for a trader who simply wants to bet on the direction of the gold price without having any interest in touching the metal, it works exactly as promised.

22. If your only reason for owning gold is for short-term trading, this instrument is perfectly suitable. My only issue is with those who use it as insurance, because insurance should work on the very day that everything else collapses. And this product was never created for a day like this. The second way is real physical metal: coins and bars sitting in a vault where your name is assigned to specific serial numbers.

23. This is exactly the method I keep coming back to, and I will explain in detail why in the next section. For now, I will only say this . The gold bar has no management team, no shareholders, no quarterly reports, no rules of use, and it has never in its history sent a letter to the owner stating that redemptions are suspended until further notice.

24. This one sentence should be enough for you to understand almost everything about the difference between owning metal and owning the right to it. The third way is through mining companies, businesses that directly extract this metal from the ground. This is a completely different thing than owning gold, and I want to clearly distinguish between these concepts because a huge number of people confuse them.

25. A mining company is a business. It has costs, mostly fixed —for labor, energy, and equipment—and income that fluctuates with the price of gold. Because costs remain almost constant and revenue fluctuates, a company's profit margin can change much more dramatically than the price of gold itself. When gold rises by 20%, an efficient company's profits can increase by 60 or 80%, because the difference between the cost of mining an ounce and its selling price increases significantly .

26. This is where the attraction lies. I have made a good profit from well-chosen mining companies over the decades, but the same " lever" works in the opposite direction with the same force. A 20% drop in the price of gold can completely destroy the profitability of a mining company. And in addition to price risks, you now have to deal with labor disputes, flooded mines, political risks in the country of operation, and the constant possibility that management will decide to spend the entire budget on an ambitious project instead of giving you your money back.

27. Mining companies are a real way to make money from gold, but they are a business bet combined with a commodity bet, and they need to be treated with the seriousness that such a combination deserves. That's three out of four. I'll hold off on the fourth point for now, because once I show it to you, it will really change your perception of the entire mining sector.

28. And I want you to properly understand the first three before we get to it. Here's some advice that I was given early in my career by a man I respected immensely in this business. He said, "Follow what cannot be printed." Six words, and they changed my attitude towards money forever. Central banks can print currency without limits.

29. They can't print gold. This is the main argument for owning it, and it is a strong, truly valid argument. But here's the catch, which took me years to fully appreciate. While no one can print more gold, many can print more gold rights . Paper contracts, fund shares, futures positions. They can be created in virtually unlimited quantities, significantly exceeding the actual supply under them.

30. So, the wisdom is correct, but it only protects you when you are actually holding onto something that cannot be printed. Not a requirement created by someone who could easily print more requirements as soon as the demand arises. That's the whole trap. And that's why I stopped considering ETFs my insurance policy many years ago.

31. Now let's get to the part that almost no one in this field explains properly. And that's the reason I said the fourth way is quietly outperforming mining companies for a certain type of investor. It's called a royalty and streaming company. Forget about the name for a second and just look at the business model, because it is brilliantly simple.

32. These companies provide mining companies with a large amount of cash upfront. The funds needed to actually build a mine and begin production. In exchange, they get one of two things. Either a royalty—a small share of the mine's revenue, often 1 to 5% over the life of the mine, or a stream—a contractual right to buy a portion of future production at a large fixed discount to the market price, often around 20% of what gold is trading at at the time.

33. That's all. This is the whole business. No trucks, no drilling equipment, no huge payrolls, no cleanup obligations. A tiny team of people who wrote big checks years ago and now reap the benefits of everything that comes from dozens of different mines around the world. Let me give you a real number to really make an impression.

34. The largest company operating under this model has about 40 employees and a market value of tens of billions of dollars. This amounts to over a billion dollars in company value per employee. And they have virtually no debt. Compare this to a typical mining company, which after all expenses might keep about 40 cents out of every dollar of revenue, while a royalty company structured this way might keep well over 70 cents out of that same dollar, because when costs go up at the mine , it's the mining company's problem, not theirs.

35. The same gold at its core, in many cases the same mines, but a completely different business, in my opinion, much better . You get exposure to the price of gold that rivals that of a miner, while eliminating much of the operational headache. I want to be honest with you, because that is the main purpose of this channel.

36. This is not free money, and it never was. You are still completely dependent on the price of gold and whether the mines that funded these companies are actually producing. Royalties on a mine that closes prematurely are royalties for nothing. These companies are constantly forced to reallocate capital into new deals to continue growing as their existing assets eventually run out .

37. And because the market has realized how good these businesses really are, you rarely get to buy these companies cheaply. They usually trade at a premium and patience is required, but if you've always liked the idea of investing in mining without wanting to take on all the operational risks of a miner, this is where I recommend directing your research first.

38. So, here's how I actually allocate my own money between these four options, and I say it the same way every time. I am not a financial advisor. This is not personal advice for your specific situation. It's just how I personally choose to think about it. Physical metal is the foundation. This is the level of insurance, the part I would like to have in reserve for a certain occasion.

39. Everything else in the financial system is undergoing serious scrutiny. It does not generate income. Buying it requires a small premium to do it right. And after reaching a certain volume, it needs to be stored properly, which for me means dedicated storage. This means specific bars with specific serial numbers, assigned to me by name, that are off the balance sheet of any storage company.

40. So that in the event of this company going bankrupt, no one can touch my gold to pay off their debts. Look at what the world's central banks have actually been doing over the past few years. They bought over 1,000 tons of gold annually, and they don't buy index fund shares. They move numbered bars into storage facilities that they physically control.

41. I think this says a lot about how seriously the people who handle the largest sums of money in the world actually take this distinction. On top of that foundation, I hold a smaller stake in mining companies and an even smaller stake in royalty and streaming companies, as both options carry real business risks, superimposed on the risk of changing raw material prices.

42. And I want only a small portion of my capital to be exposed to this combination of risks. I still occasionally use ETFs purely as a short-term trading tool when I need a quick reaction to a price change , but I no longer consider it for a moment as insurance. It's just not built for that, no matter how it's advertised.

43. And I want to leave you with the philosophy behind all of this , because it's more important than any individual product I've mentioned. Gold in your portfolio was never intended to make you rich. It should be the thing that remains steadfast when everything else falls on very bad times. Most serious investors I respect invest 5 to 15% of their portfolio in it.

44. Some more conservative family offices increase this proportion to 20%. No sane person would invest half their fortune in this. This is just an adjustment, not a rate. And the moment you forget about this difference, it usually ceases to perform its function for you. So, here's the whole picture, laid out honestly.

45. ETFs for quick trading are good, but they are not your insurance. Physical metal is your true foundation, which must be stored properly and in your name. Mining companies are a higher-risk, higher-reward segment for those willing to do the real homework. And royalty companies—that part that almost no one talks about, that offers a significant portion of potential profit with far fewer operational problems.

46. If this really helped you see the difference between owning gold and owning the right to gold, do one thing for me . Share this with someone who is currently holding the same ETF, thinking it is their lifeline. This one spread could genuinely change how they protect their money. And if you haven't already , subscribe, because there are many more such discussions to come, and I'd like you to hear it from someone who has experienced failure and learned the hard way —just as I once had to learn to be prepared. See you in the next video.
