I once made a mistake and because of that mistake I lost crores. No, that mistake was not about money. That was a mistake of thinking. My name is Chali Mangar and today I will tell you something that I have learned after living for 99 years. Listen carefully because this is not something to be listened to.
This is a matter of understanding. First of all, you people are doing a very stupid thing. You buy a worthless company cheaply and think what a deal you got. I ask you. If you get a rotten mango for ₹2, is it a good deal? No. Because rotten mango is expensive even for ₹2. Warren and I learned this principal years ago.
Buy Wonderful Company at Fair Price. Not fair company at a wonderful price. What happens in India ? A stock fell from ₹500 to ₹150. People say brother, it is 70% down, take it. But no one asks how much that company actually earns? What is its business model ? Will it last another 10 years? You look at the price, not the business.
This is the mistake. This is the real mistake. A wonderful company is one that has a motive, a brand that keeps its competitors at bay and that keeps getting better every year. Such a company may seem a bit expensive, but that inflation is actually cheap because that company keeps making money for you over time.
The cheap worthless company goes down another day and you sit there crying. Write in the comment Wonderful if from today you will only watch Wonderful Businesses. Second thing is tax. In India people are afraid of taxes. They go to the accountant and say, brother, at least we have to pay the tax. let me ask you a question.
If you have ₹1 lakh and you pay it in taxes today, that money is gone forever. But if that ₹1 lakh stays in your investment for 10 more years and keeps compounding, then that ₹1 lakh can become ₹5 lakh. Postponing taxes is legal. There is no tax evasion. There are many legal ways for this in India. Make long term investments in equity mutual funds.
LTCG is exempt up to Rs 1 lakh. Invest in ELSS. Take advantage of ATc. Real estate indexation benefit is available. Business owners can legally claim their expenses. Don't pay taxes unless necessary. Every rupee that remains in your hands does compounding. Every rupee that goes to the government today stops compounding.
This is not a trick. This is a basic understanding of finance. Third thing and this is the thing that irritates me the most. People invest money in things they don't understand. Someone says brother this is crypto, it will be very big. Some say it's a startup. Next is the unicorn. Some say this sector is very hot.
And what do you do? You invest money because you have FOMO. I am afraid that I might miss it. My rule is Circle of Competence. Invest in what you know. If you don't understand pharma, don't go into pharma. If you don't understand IT, don't go into IT. But if you are a teacher, you can understand education companies better than any analyst.
If you are a doctor then you understand hospital chase and diagnostic companies better. Going outside your circle is gambling. No investment. 90% of investors in India break this rule. From today you will not break it. Fourthly, I will ask you an uncomfortable question. Which stock did you look at last month and think, man, this one has made a lot of money?
I wish I had. That feeling, that envy, that jealousy, what did it give you? Nothing. I once said NV is the worst scene. At least we get something from Greed. Greed at least forces you to take action. NV only burns you and destroys your judgment. When you invest out of jealousy, you invest money in the wrong stock at the wrong time and for the wrong reason.
How to convert NV to Investment? Whenever you feel jealous after seeing someone's portfolio, stop. Do one thing, analyze that stock. Understand why he scored. Is there still value in it? Is this in your Circle of Competence? If yes then invest logically. If not, then convert that jealousy into wisdom.
Make jealousy your fuel. But don't let him be the driver. Fifth thing and this is the most important. You guys are very busy. Open Zerodha, buy yesterday, sell today, get another tip tomorrow, buy sell, buy sell and think this is investing, no, this is just paying commission to the broker. My philosophy is simple, buy a good stock and sit on your s.
Investing sounds boring, yes, but this is how it works. There was a study in India, people who invested in Nifty 50 index in 2003 and sat till 2023 got an average CAGR of 15%, 90% of those who did daily trading lost their money. Just imagine if you had invested ₹1 lakh in Nifty in 2003 and just sat there, today it would have been more than ₹16 lakh without any tension, without any screen, without any tip.
Traders try to earn daily. Investors make a good decision once and let time do the work. Time is the biggest investor. Let him work. Now I will tell you one last thing. I made only one big mistake. I learned all this very late. You still have time. Discover Wonderful Companies today. Manage your taxes smartly from today.
