Beetle Lynch is a very famous investor and as a as the fund manager Magellan fund at Fidelity Investments a financial services company which provides mutual funds for investors especially in the United States Mr Lynch managed the fund from 1977 to 1990 where he oversaw an average return of 29 per year our performing the S P 500 in all but two years something incredibly remarkable and something which has not been achieved by any other fund manager in the history of the stock market ever his fun Grew From 18 million US dollars to 14 billion US dollars under his tenure he was a fierce advocate for Value investing and made strong profits of reliable businesses and other growing undervalued businesses such as Philip Morris General Electric Volvo Chrysler and Lowe's Peter Lynch wrote A Few books but by far his most famous one was one up on Wall Street where he talked about his investing journey and some of the companies he's invested in along with why he invested in them in this book one up on Wall Street he dedicates a chapter to how he categorizes these stocks in this video I'd like to talk about the six categories of stocks that Peter Lynch talks about and maybe go into a bit of detail about them as well the categories he uses are number one the slow Growers number two the cyclicals number three the turnaround place number four the acid place number five the stalwarts and number six the fast Growers I'll talk more about these categories in this video do note that this is not Financial advice I am not a financial advisor nor am I suggesting any stocks for you to purchase do your own research before looking at and purchasing any stock these are the cards the slow Growers are companies that pay consistent dividends year on year but do not have much in terms of Returns on the actual stock price these companies have a rate of growth that are slightly higher than the rate of growth of the U.S national GNP on show on the screen is the graph for General Motors a company that was regarded as a slow grower we can see the past few years that the revenue is increasing albeit very slightly year on year this comes to around a two percent or three percent return which is even much lower than a level of inflation the values displayed are in billions sooner or later most popular Industries become a slow growing industry including metals like aluminum and steel and utilities like the railroad and electrical utilities railroad companies used to be the big hype of the economy and were considered brilliant Investments however over the years as flight AS flight travel developed as well as the U.S government not allowing for that much of growth of these railroad companies they became fairly redundant and therefore those Industries grew slower and slower until they became until they started to get a two to three percent increase in Revenue year on year the expectations of these stocks are to give out generous and regular dividends General Motors has a five percent Dominion yield rate and there are a lot of companies especially outside the United States such as Rio Tinto in Brazil which give out higher Investments due to having that a lot of cash flow and secondly to have a flat or slowly increasing chart for earnings as we can see these companies are not recommended by Peter Lynch for one reason if they have low potential for growth you would not make money from it earnings enrich your company and reduce rate of earning will make a company much less attractive the company is going is not going anywhere fast neither will the stock these companies have a rate of return which is lower than inflation like I said and therefore the the rate you're actually losing the value of money on your investment making them not so good Investments but something that you should know about foreign whose sales profits and revenue are continuously increasing and decreasing year on year these companies involved in Industries like Airlines steel aluminum and auto automobiles as we saw with the recent covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown on a foreign travel and the airline companies took a massive hit as the revenues went down meaning that the stock prices went down quite drastically as well this picked up as the as the borders started to open up but they're still not recovered meaning that they're still on the upturn of the cycle we can see this on screen with the changes in revenue of Ford Motors a very famous American Automobile Company but it shows a revenue between the years 2010 and 2021.
the revenue clearly increases and decreases in Cycles ignoring the massive drops in 2020 due to covid-19 which saw decreased consumer spending in uh Goods in Goods such as automobiles we see that in the beginning of 2011 and 12 Revenue rises from 130 to 138 billion USD but returns back to 130 billion before increasing again we see this trend in 2015 and 2016 as well this pattern is observable from the stock price as well we see the price of Ford increasing yearly for example the stock is at six dollars in 2012 and increases to 12 dollars in 2014 before falling to seven dollars in 2018 right now the stock is priced at 12 but of course this is extremely uh prone to change this method of investing in cyclicals is figuring finding out when the stock Falls and knowing when the stock is able to pick up or as Peter Lynch might put it timing is everything in cyclicals and you have to be able to detect the early signs that business is falling off picking up if invested correctly in in two years like 2012 or 2020 then the gains from the cyclicals is very high however if invested in years like 2014 it takes much longer for you to realize your place these companies are usually not recommended for the beginner and the novice stock picker as it requires an intimate knowledge of the industries around you however as Peter Lynch might say if you are part of this industry so you have a deep knowledge of these industries you will be able to notice when the profit when when the sales are increasing for these companies and when they're decreasing and assuming that the companies are already very good you may be able to pick them up at a lower price the turnaround plays are companies that are simply put doing horribly these companies are potentially going to go out of business and are weigh down a depression during Cycles however with competent management investment coupled with economic activities and Innovation products and of course a bit of luck these companies can bounce back however and this is the most important these companies need to have great fundamentals if they do not have a lot of cash in the bank or if they are not if they have extremely low assets they're in too much debt whatever it may be then these companies are not turned around place they're simply bad companies in his book one up on Wall Street Peter Lynch cites his play on Chrysler as turnaround stock according to him Chrysler has stopped when most analysts did not back to pick up however after talking with the CEO of Chrysler and other extremely important directors over at Chrysler he was convinced and he brought bought it for six dollars and slowly it became a 15 bagger meaning that it got around to 90 dollars and they later underwent a stock split he invested five percent of his fund into the company at one point which is a big risk for a big fun like his but he was able to back it up because Chrysler not only had extremely competent management they had clear plans for the future including introducing minivan minivans and other products which blew up in terms of popularity within the within American society meaning that his investment always would have returned a positive another more modern example of a turnaround play has to be the Bank of America we can see the growth of the company below or during the 2008 recession it crashed and it was the recession was not kind to Bank of America in a matter of two years it went down to one tenth of its original value to 5.57 one of its lowest points since the IPO however due to careful management post recession the stock was able to get to its cut to its value of 47 at a peak which right now went or went all the way down but however due to due to the Ukraine war and other problem factors went down to 33.73 this is a potential nine burger in company that was extremely well known Bank of America is an extremely famous Bank not only in the United States but around the world so this was a company that was in plain sight as a good investment the company can survive a raid from its creditors meaning that it's not in too high debt and even if it does pay back its debt it can still function as a company and it is not involved in a large-scale incident publicly it can be a good turnaround play the asset plays are in my opinion the most interesting kind of place yet the most difficult to evaluate it is very difficult to find but if it pays off it can pay off greatly these companies are companies are asset rich and resource rich and importantly their assets have not been valued correctly and have a extremely and have a much higher value than what they perceived the own land minerals oil gas that are of utmost importance to the company or they may even know television rights cable rights or Internet rights in particular section of the United States these companies own resources that larger companies may want and would buy at a relatively higher price allowing the stock price to increase these companies however require immense patient understanding into how the company Works how to manage manage its asset and how the assets can be useful these are not stocks that I would recommend especially for non-normous investors as valuing Assets in general is an extremely complicated task which is something that a great value investors like even Warren Buffett make it wrong now let's move on to arguably the two biggest type of stocks that should dominate anybody's portfolio and that is the stalwarts these the Star Wars are companies that provide long-term protection in terms of periods of recession they do not offer explosive growth but the level of growth is much higher than the slow Growers that we previously saw some of the most famous star words are Microsoft or alphabet Class A that is Google here we can see Microsoft's fire Trend the company has been going up consistently and has tripled in the time period these companies are established Giants at Microsoft having the largest market cap in the world as of as making this video the other is the shares of Google's parent company alphabet the value of this class A shares has almost quadrupled in the past five years considering that the usage of Google and other alphabet subsidiaries like Android and YouTube continue to increase these companies are great protection come recession time as seen in the minimal dips that they had in during the pandemic especially compared to other stocks it is always great to have these companies as a part of your portfolio as a relatively unlikely to go out of business even during recession and the stock should increase steadily to provide your portfolio with security these companies are financially very strong with companies like Google having extremely low debt and having a lot more cash than debt meaning that they are able to pay off the debt and function brilliantly as a company and finally the fast Growers these are small aggressive companies have become multibaggers in the first few years growing at a rate of 20 to 25 every year these are the companies that are high risk and high reward place that can go the way of the stalwarts if successful or can run out of stamina and expansion opportunities and become a slow growth or even become bankrupt an example of a fast grower is squaring a fit a financial technology company they exploded onto the market multiplying 20 times over a period of five years these companies are the big winners in the stock market that can make a break an analyst career these are the risky multibaggers that people are after however they're extremely leverage your debt and have chances of losing a lot of their value in Bear markets as we're currently seeing in the Union in the United States Market Square alone from a square alone from a high of around 229 dollars has gone down to to 71 dollars uh since uh since its peak so here's some of my final thoughts we saw the six type of companies according to Peter Lynch but it's important to remember that companies never and as a rule never stay in the same category today's fast growth can easily become tomorrow's towards sometimes slow Growers can become fast Growers or companies like the AMD or Advanced Micro Devices can become turnaround place to fast Growers this kind of companies must be evaluated year on year especially if you're using this as a as a basis for long-term Investments when things start to go south for a company it is important to monitor the situation around the company and see whether or not it can survive the the best market right now we're in a we are in a horrible market and as we're making this video the US is one day from being officially in a recession uh companies some companies have reacted well to this Apple or Google or Microsoft have well they have gone down they have still maintained their revenue or slowed down a bit in Revenue but have not gone down meanwhile we see poorly managed companies like Netflix who are well thank over the past few months and are constantly losing subscribers and losing market value as well it is important according to Peter Lynch therefore to see not just financially how a company is but the situation around the company to ensure that it is a good company that you invest in it is also important to categorize the company into the six categories and and analyze it based on those expectations instead of mix and matching which companies how you analyze which companies using a frame of fast growth for cyclical companies may make sense over a small period of time for example if you took a two three year period where Ford blew up it would be and it would show like it's a fast grower however zooming out lets us know that this is a cyclical company not a fast grower therefore a way of evaluating it the way when you buy the timing of buying and the timing approximate timing of selling all becomes different for different types of companies so I hope you enjoyed the video that I made so I put in quite a bit of effort into it so I would appreciate it if you were able to like drop a like and maybe even subscribe I will be planning to make a few more videos so drop some comments below as well how can I improve where could I have where did I go wrong and where did I go right let me know all of this and yeah that's all thank you
