Ray Dalio Legendary Billionaire Investor, Futures Trader, Hedge Fund Manager, Best-Selling Author and vows to donate more than half of this fortune to charitable causes within his lifetime. 7 Legendary Success Facts Born in 1949, Ray Dalio grew up on Long Island, New York. Ray’s father, a jazz musician, often had to work late, leaving limited time for bonding.

His mother was a comforting presence, always there to help and encourage him. When he was older, Ray worked various jobs to make his own spending money. He caddied at a nearby golf course where Wall Street professionals played. He listened to their conversations and ended up buying his very first share of stock.

When it made money, he was hooked. In school, Ray struggled to find the point of it all because he didn’t like following instructions or memorizing things just because a teacher told him to. Ray was accepted into C.W. Post College (now LIU Post) on probation because he had mediocre grades in high school.

College was a very different experience and Ray thrived because he could focus on the courses that he found interesting. He did so well that after graduating from college, Ray was accepted into Harvard Business School. Bridgewater Associates, considered one of the top hedge funds in the world is an enterprise that Ray has guided through continual metamorphoses since 1975.

Dalio started the Firm out of his 2-bedroom apartment and transformed it into the world's largest hedge fund. Before that however, an incorrect call in 1982 was a brutal blow forcing Ray to eventually let all of his employees go. Still, he continued, reviewing where he’d been wrong and learning from his mistakes, and rebuilding.

The continued success of Bridgewater stems from Ray’s tenacity to dig into how things work or have worked in the past and how that can be quantified into algorithms to drive profitable investment strategies. Dalio solves economic problems at-scale. For example, his process proved valuable when it came to the production of a new McDonalds item, the McNugget.

McDonald's was originally hesitant to release the product due to concerns about price fluctuations. Ray worked with leading chicken producers to help them utilize the futures markets to calculate their costs and be able to quote a fixed price to McDonalds. Dalio became known for sending his "Daily Observations" on the Markets and Macroeconomic events to his clients.

Ray was one of the first investors to predict the credit crisis eventually erupting into the 2008 great financial crisis. In 2011, CIO Magazine called Dalio the “Steve Jobs of Investing.” In 2012, Dalio received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement. As of 2022, Bridgewater made $52.2 Billion in total profit since its inception for its clients.

As of October 2022, Forbes lists Dalio with a net worth of $19.1 billion. Forbes estimates that Dalio has given more than $1 billion to philanthropic causes. Dalio Foundations is a family endeavor supporting numerous causes including education, health and wellness, financial inclusion, ocean exploration and preservation.

Dalio also joined the ranks of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in pledging to give away more than half his fortune to charitable causes within his lifetime.
