Charlie Munger, vice chairman of the American multinational company Warren Shire Hathaway, was known as the American money magnate. If he had even laid his hand on a failing company, it would have grown so large that his investment would have multiplied. The world's most intelligent investor, Warren Buffett, considered him his right-hand man and elder brother.
He made thousands of profits for his company's investors and earned billions of rupees himself. But did you know that Charlie faced such difficulties in his early life that they could have broken any ordinary person's back, bringing them down to earth. In such circumstances, people at 90 would n't even dare to stand?
At the age of 7, Charlie worked 10-hour days at a grocery store while studying, completing assignments for his friends for two dollars. At the age of 10, he also wrote love letters, poems, and leave applications for his friends for $10. He was so fond of reading that he read a book every day. Charlie wanted to become a lawyer, so he joined Harvard Law School.
He got married at a young age, but the conflicts escalated, leading to a divorce at a young age, which left him deeply depressed. This was just the beginning of his troubles. He had to give his wife the house and all his savings as part of the divorce payment, and he also became a single father to his son.
Despite all these problems, society continued to tease him, calling him a loser. Somehow, Charlie overcame the shock. One day, his 8-year-old son, Teddy, became very ill. When he took him to the hospital, doctors diagnosed him with advanced-stage blood cancer. He could n't afford treatment, so he began taking loans at exorbitant interest rates.
Over the next year and a half, Charlie was completely burdened with debt, spending every night in the hospital waiting area. Despite all his efforts, he couldn't save his son. Cancer ultimately claimed his life. This brought Charlie back to depression, and he even contemplated suicide. He declared, "I will not surrender to life." He agreed, and gradually paid off his debts by working as an advocate.
Three years later, he finally remarried. His law firm closed, leaving him traumatized. He opened an investment firm, which closed after six months, and another trauma struck. He managed to pull himself together, but the problems did n't seem to end. Meanwhile, he developed cataracts, but because there was n't a precise treatment for it at the time, he lost vision in one eye completely during surgery.
Doctors warned that his other eye might also go blind. Charlie didn't give up and decided to learn Braille. Now, what is Braille? Blind people who can't see books study by stroking a book with a special punching system. This is called Braille language. Luckily, Charlie didn't lose his other eye, after which he made several good investments, and Buffett appointed him as his investment advisor.
Together, they started the company Werner Hathaway, and then Charlie He never looked back, but lived a long, happy life of 99 years, and departed in November 2023, two days before his 100th birthday. You can understand how significant it is to receive life advice from a man who faced so many difficulties, never giving up, and built a billion-dollar empire.
Therefore, in the next few minutes, we will listen to Charlie Munger's speech in Hindi, which has the power to change your life. So, stay tuned until the end. This is a very important speech. If you want to become rich through investment, it's crucial to reach the savings milestone of $100,000. One hundred thousand dollars, or approximately ₹100,000 rupees, I don't care how many hardships you have to endure to achieve this.
If it means traveling on foot or by bus instead of driving, choosing only food available with coupons, or putting aside your desires and wearing full clothes, wearing old clothes, using an old mobile phone, and driving an old car, you must learn to save from all sides. Save your earnings with savings.
Increase your investments so you can reach your goal of $100,000 first. After that, you can slow down your investments a bit. Crossing the first milestone will make it easier to reach your goal, which is financial freedom. When I was a lawyer and started investing my small savings, I tried to figure out how much diversification I should have in my investment portfolio to earn a 10% return each year.
I did n't have a formula at the time; instead, I understood with the help of my high school algebra that if I remained invested in my portfolio for 30 to 40 years, there was a 99% chance that my portfolio would remain profitable. I simply should n't invest in just three or four stocks and should keep rotating my holdings every three or four years.
The simpler you keep your investments, the more research you will be able to do. In fact, Buffett says that the concept of diversification is only for know-nothing investors—those who know nothing about investing. If you're capable of finding an investment that will work well for you—the three stocks you think will perform well—then you're hurting yourself by trying to learn about 50 stocks.
Investment gurus who teach you to diversify are making their money. For true investors, all this is nonsense. Becoming rich is actually quite easy. All you need is to follow the right path. Therefore, while learning yourself, choose a minimum number of stocks that can work for you. Now, I'd like to give you life advice that has the power to change your life.
So, understand deeply that if you have the right judgment, your life will be much better than if you make wrong judgments. Your judgment will be right only when you make bad judgments and learn from them. That's why you should always strive to improve yourself and your life. If you don't, there's no chance of your life improving.
Whenever someone asks me what secret to a long and happy life I'd like to share. It's quite easy if you're not overly jealous, not overly angry, do n't spend more than you earn, remain patient in every difficulty, and work with trustworthy people. These simple rules will prove to be very helpful in improving your life.
Even though they're all clichés, they really work. I believe there's a simple way for anyone to make their life easier: if an industry is doing well, if a field is growing rapidly, all you need to do is step into it, and it will take you up without much talent or work. If you want peace in your life, you need to lower your expectations and make your life more optimistic.
I can remain optimistic even when I'm so close to death. So, you can instill some hope and confidence within yourself and face a little inflation. I always consider reading a gift from God. When someone talks to you, sometimes they say something you already know. Or you don't want to know about it at all, or they may speak too fast or too slow, which can bother us.
But when you do book reading, the command is in your hands. You can read whenever you want, learn whatever you want, and reading has helped me a lot in reaching where I am today. Well, today people gift me many books and I have a huge library, but in my younger days, I had to select and order boxes from the New York Times review column, but that time was also amazing.
I learned a lot from reading, and it was perfect for me. So friends, how did you like this powerful story and speech by Charlie Munger?
