Today's story is taken from this amazing book The Warren Buffett of India Rakesh Jhunjhunwala The Big Bull of Indian Share Market. The author is Mahesh Dutt Sharma. This book is not just the story of one investor. This is the manifesto of mindset. Where defeat was considered learning and fear was made an opportunity.
If you think I don't have capital then what can I do big? So this story will teach you that to become big you need vision, not money. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala proves that even a small start of ₹5000 can become a legacy worth crores if done with the right mindset. The book [musical] has all those moments where an ordinary man became extraordinary, where he turned loss into a guru, and where he saw hope even in a market crash.
Because for him the stock market was not just a game of profit but a classroom of learning. So friends, get ready to immerse yourself in the story where a small dream changed India's investing thinking. Let's go back to the year when everyone was scared and one boy decided that risk, not fear, would be his identity.
Chapter One Starting from ₹5000 to billions. The year was 1985. A hot Mumbai afternoon, a small room with an old wooden table, some newspaper cuttings and a young man pressing the buttons of a calculator. He was Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. He was only 25 years old. I had ₹5,000 in my pocket, which probably wasn't enough for a month's needs.
But he had a [musical] confidence worth millions. When everyone used to say that stock market is a gamble. He used to call her Kamli. It's not a gamble, it's a game of understanding . Rakesh spent his childhood in a middle class family. Father worked in the Income Tax Department. And at home, there was often talk about Sensex along with newspapers.
In his childhood he used to ask his father what is market? And Papa would smile and say, son, market is the place where people sell emotions and intelligent people make money. This line stuck in his mind. Rakesh completed his studies in Chartered Accountancy. Everyone thought that now he would get a secure job.
But he said I don't want to do the job. I want to live as per my wish. He knew that there was risk in the market. But that risk did not give him fear but excitement. Because he knew that if he wanted to become big in life, playing safe would not help. The day came when he placed his first bet. The company was Tata T.
The share price was ₹43. He said with full confidence, buy 1000 shares. The broker asked, "Such an expensive company, the market is down right now. " Rakesh smiled. This is the opportunity when everyone is afraid and I am buying. After a few months, the same Tata T stock reached ₹143. Triple profits and a lesson: The biggest rewards in the market go to those with the most patience.
That one deal changed not just his account balance but also his thinking. He understood that money in the market is made with intelligence and not out of thin air . That day was the beginning of his investing journey and in the coming years, this boy would become India's Big Bull. The name that will become a motivation for every investor.
We should understand one thing from this chapter. Investment begins with learning, not money. Rakesh did not invest just ₹5,000. He invested his faith, his vision, and his thinking. But the path to success was not easy. The market does not just give profits. He also takes tests. In the next chapter, we'll learn how Jhunjhunwala turned market fear into a game.
Chapter Two Risk and Wiz's Game. 1986 Mumbai stock market was shaking like a roller coaster at that time. Sometimes the Sensex would soar, sometimes it would fall down with a crash. People were panicking, withdrawing money, and newspaper headlines were saying the market might crash. But amidst this fear there was a [musical] face that was smiling.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. People used to say that he is mad. The market is breaking down and it's buying. But Rakesh replied, "If everyone runs away in fear, then who will take a chance in the market?" This thinking made him different from others. He did not move with the crowd. He thought against the crowd.
He invested [in music] even when everyone was clicking sell. He used to say that if there's blood on the market the street, that's the time to buy stocks. Risk was not a fear for him. That was an entry ticket into the game of success. He used to note every fall as a lesson. He wrote in his diary: The market will test you every day, and every test will come as a teacher.
Because for him, loss did not mean failure [in music] but rather the fee for the experience. Gradually he understood that to win in the market, one needs vision and patience, not speed. He used to say that everyone thinks I am lucky. But I am just prepared. When people were afraid, they did research.
When people sold , he bought. Because they knew that the biggest profits in the market are made when everyone panics. The market crash taught him that risk is a teacher and Wiz is a leader. Vision without risk is blind, and vision without risk is incomplete. Every investor should understand that when the market goes down, the world is scared, but the real investor smiles because he knows that a down market is a discount market.
Rakesh [Sangeet] said I invest for the long term, not the short term. And it was this philosophy that transformed him from a trader to a legend. Risk made him fall and taught him. But every time he got up and became smarter than before because he knew the market doesn't always beat me. I learn something new every time.
And now begins the journey where Jhunjhunwala's vision turns stocks like Titan into diamonds. In Chapter 3, we will know how a small company became India's Big Bull. Chapter 3 Titan Story Wiz's Multibagger Year Was 2003 The stock market was once again filled with fear. People were saying it was hard to make money in the market now.
Investors were running away. Confidence was shattered . But there was one person who was thinking contrary to the crowd. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. One day he saw the shares of Titan Company Limited. A jewelry brand that had a name but no trust. People used to laugh. Who invests in the jewellery business ?
But Rakesh's eyes were where others were not. He saw the future of India. The growth story of the Indian middle class and the shine of women empowerment. He told himself every home needs a watch and gold, and Titan offers both. With the same confidence he bought Titan shares around Rs 3 . People again said that this will cause loss.
The gold business is not safe. But he didn't just look at the price. Saw the value. As time passed, Titan slowly started moving upwards. From ₹3 to ₹10, ₹10 to ₹50 and then beyond ₹1000 . Those who were laughing earlier were now saying that this is what visionary investing is. Titan did n't just change their portfolio.
He made him known as The Big Bull of India. Because he showed that if you can see the value within a company, market noise doesn't matter. Titan's story teaches us that long-term investing isn't just about waiting, but about trusting your analysis, your research, and your beliefs. Every day in the market people look at prices, but great investors look at value.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala bought Viz not Price and this is what makes the difference between an investor and a legend. The root of every great success is patience and faith. Titan 's stock rose, but Rakesh's name grew even faster , his trust and his confidence. Because they saw what others were afraid to see and that's what visionary investing is where imagination invests before reality.
But Titan was just the beginning. In the next chapter, we'll learn how Big Bull turned market losses, criticism, and downfalls into learnings and turned every crash into his comeback story. Chapter Four, From Market Crash to Comeback. The headline of every newspaper was the same. Global Financial Crisis.
The Sensex was falling. People were crying. The money was sinking. There was panic on the face of every investor. Now everything is over. But there was a voice that said, if the market falls, there is an opportunity, don't run away . That voice was of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. He also lost crores of rupees [in music] in the market crash.
The media taunted. The Big Bull also fell. People said, now see how he returns. But Rakesh laughed and said I cannot lose to the market because I have learnt from the market. He considered every loss not as pain but as education. It is said that the market teaches you patience and patience teaches you profit.
During the crash, he did research, studied music, and collected his favorite stocks at bargain prices. When the rest of the people were panic selling, he was buying. He wrote that the market falls every time but I become stronger every time. Within a few years, the same shares which were giving losses in 2008 became multibaggers by 2014.
People started calling him Big Bull again . But for him, it wasn't just a market comeback. This was the comeback of life. Because he believed that if you have vision and patience, then after every crash there is definitely a new flight. His formula was simple. Learn in down turn and earn in up turn.
He used to say that the market does not always give rewards. Sometimes he also takes exams and I keep practicing to pass every test. This is the biggest lesson for every investor. Do n't be afraid of market crashes. That testing phase is where [the music] becomes your character. Patience plus preparation equals less back.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwara taught that falling is not failure, it is refusing to rise. Every time the market fell, they rose higher. Every loss made him not a great investor but a great human being. He used to say that the one who got scared could not learn. Real growth begins not with market crashes but with risk-taking. Because without risk, no story ever becomes a legend. Rule to Patience is the real profit. He's held stocks like Titan Crystal for years. They used to say the market will laugh at you in the short term but reward you in the long term.
Patience was his biggest weapon. Think against the Rule Three crowd. They used to say it's easy to follow the crowd, but going against the crowd is what makes an investor a master . When everyone was selling, he was buying because he knew that the majority is not always right. His formula was simple.
Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy and Greedy When Others Are Fearful. Have faith in Rule for India. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala used to say that this country is made to become a bull. When the world had less demand for India's market , he used to say that India is the biggest opportunity of this century. He instilled confidence in every Indian investor that the growth of our country is our wealth.
Rule Five: Earn money but do n't lose humanity. He used to say that becoming rich is easy. It is difficult to remain rich if you lose your values. He donated crores to hospital projects, education, health causes. It was said that the real purpose of wealth is sharing, not showing off. These five principles hold the truth not only of investment but also of life .
He taught that the market is not just a place to make money but a place to build character [in music]. On August 14, 2022, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala said goodbye to this world. But his words still resonate today. Believe in India, believe in yourself. He is gone but his confidence, his laughter and his teachings are still alive in the hearts of every Indian investor.
