e two stocks i'm going to talk about in this video are pacific biosciences and illumina both stocks have a big weighting in arc invests genomic etf those of you in the know of course will be aware that arc invest is kathy woods company and she invests purely in innovative and disruptive companies and the companies with her highest weightings are the ones that she has the strongest conviction of becoming very disruptive and therefore successful in the future so only as recently as september 4 illumina had the third highest weighting in the portfolio but now when you take a look at the portfolio as of making this video on october nine pack bio has the third highest weighting effectively replacing the limiter now illumina is weighted twelfth amounting to two percent of the overall etf whilst pack bio makes up six percent of the overall portfolio so why has kathy wood become so bullish on pap bio and less so with illumina for those who don't know both companies specialize in the making of genetic testing machines or next generation sequencing as they call it illumina's sequencing machines are called short read sequences because they read short whereas pac bios sequences are called long read sequences because they can read long stretches of a gene at one go to date illumina has been the market leader in this area and their short read sequencing machines are ubiquitous within the genetic testing community worldwide illumina went from a market cap of over 58 billion dollars on the 5th of august this year down to a market cap of 38 billion on the 22nd of september that's a staggering loss of 20 billion in market investment within the space of a single month in contrast pogba's stock went parabolic during the very same period from 3.92 to 8.79 by the 22nd of september this year representing a 100 increase in value and as of today the 9th of october whilst recording this video it went up even further and now stands at 13.50 representing a whopping 340 percent increase in value so what is it that has made both of these companies have such a seismic shift in value in opposite directions well in an article on the arc invest website which they posted on the 21st of september this article holds all of the answers and it is worth going through this article for some context the article states as follows surprisingly after 17 years the whole human genome has not been sequenced completely since they sequenced the first whole human genome in 2003 scientists have struggled to identify small gaps scattered amongst the 23 pairs of chromosomes these dark genes have limited our understanding of genetics evolution and human disease dark genes contain long highly repetitive stretches of dna that short read sequences cannot interpret many errors take place during sample preparation making it difficult or impossible to overcome with software tools last week researchers published a complete sequence of chromosome 8 the first non-sex chromosome to be sequenced completely the team identified the 2.3 percent of the chromosome 8's missing or dark genes with a combination of long greed instruments from oxford nanopore technologies and pacific biosciences unlike the short-read platforms the more expensive long-read platforms can sequence hard-to-read areas of the genome among other discoveries the researchers found a 644 000 base pair region in a gene cluster defb-1 seemingly implicated in cystic fibrosis apparently def1 encodes proteins that equips the immune system to fight of bacterial infections in airways suggesting that mutations in dfb-1 could influence the severity of cystic fibrosis whilst geneticists typically have diagnosed cystic fibrosis by identifying mutations in the cftr gene other genetic factors such as mutations in dfb-1 will help them diagnose the cause of the disease more accurately in our view diagnostic testing companies must invest aggressively in long read sequences and other tools or they will fall victim to disruptive innovation for those who don't know as i said earlier on illumina's sequencing machines are all short read machines whilst pack bio and oxford nanopore have developed these long read sequencing machines that are responsible for the breakthrough in this article so according to this new research long grid sequences have the capacity to be far superior to short read sequences and therefore long grid sequences are definitely the future unless illumina pivots into long grid sequences then they look very much right for disruption illumina was expected to announce at its september quarterly earnings call what steps its plans to take to address this gap between short read and language sequences and maintain market share and dominance and it appears that the company didn't see long grid sequences as a threat hence why investors see it as being at risk of being disrupted so if you ask me i would agree with arc invest that illumina are not taking this threat as seriously as they should and they're likely to lose market share to pack bio and oxford nanopore unless they start to invest in long grid technology but in all fairness it isn't all doom and gloom for illumina and i remain bullish about illumina for completely separate reason and i will cover that in another video but for now when it comes to next generation sequences pack bio and oxford nanopore appear to have caught up with illumina and they may well leave illuminate trailing in their wake pack bars revenue is currently under 100 million dollars whilst illumina's revenue is 3.5 billion dollars if pat bioware to steal 25 of illumina's market share that would be an additional revenue of 750 million dollars that's 7.5 times its current revenue so you can see that there's a really huge opportunity here for packed bio if the long read sequences are successful as for oxford nanopore it's a privately owned company spun out of oxford university in england it's unlikely to go public so regular investors such as you and i are unlikely to get an opportunity to invest in it but if like me you believe that long read sequences are the future then now is an ideal opportunity to get invested in pac bio and benefit from this disruption that is about to take effect full disclosure i am long illumina and pac bio this is not financial advice and you should always do your own research before getting into a stock or seek the assistance of a financial advisor if you've liked this video please consider liking commenting and subscribing i would consider any of those gestures a huge reward for my time in creating this content and if you've done any of these already thank you very much and i'll see you in the next video
