A man who started with โน5,000 and earned crores. It's not just a line. This is a mindset. There is a stubbornness. There is a passion that every human being should have. If he wants to do something big in life. This is the story of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, whom the whole world knows as Big Bull. But every great man is once small and his story is also something like this.
He was born on 5 July 1960 in a simple family in Mumbai city. His father was an Income Tax Officer. There was no shortage of money in the house but there was no luxurious life either. His father was very interested in the stock market and he often discussed the market with his friends. Little Rakesh used to sit quietly and listen to those things.
He did not understand what these shares were? How does this market work? But a curiosity had definitely arisen within him. One day he asked his father what is this stock market ? Then instead of giving him a direct answer, his father told him to first read the newspaper and understand the news. Know the world.
Only then will you understand how the market works. This was the moment from where his learning started. He started reading the newspaper every day. Started learning about companies. Gradually his interest increased and he decided that he would also enter the stock market. But it was not so easy because at that time entering the stock market was considered a big risk.
When he told his father that he wanted to go to the market, his father did not refuse him but put a condition that he would not take money from him. If they have to go to the market, they will go on their own. This thought stuck in his heart and he decided that he would do something big on his own. In 1985, he entered the stock market with only โน5000.
This amount seems very small in today's time. But it was too big for him at the time. He started his career as a trader. Initially he made small trades and tried to understand the market. But the market is not an easy place. Something new happens here every day. Sometimes profit and sometimes loss and the same thing happened with him too.
Initially he got some profits which increased his confidence. But soon the market showed him the real game. He started incurring losses. His money started running low. Many times it happened that he took wrong decisions and suffered huge losses. But this is where the difference lies between an ordinary person and a successful person.
The common man gives up. But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala did not give up. He learned something from every loss. He understood that decisions should not be taken emotionally in the market. He learned discipline, patience and most importantly he learned that staying in the market is the biggest victory. Gradually he changed his strategy.
He started focusing on short term trading as well as long term investments. He started looking for strong companies with a good future and then came the biggest turning point of his life. Titan Company. He bought Titan shares at a very low price. At that time very few people believed in this company but they understood the growth of the company and invested in it.
He held on to his investments for years and this patience is what sets him apart from others. Time passed and Titan Company showed tremendous growth. The value of his investment increased manifold and from here his name started spreading throughout the market. People started recognizing him. He came to be known as the Big Bull.
But even after achieving success, he did not stop learning. He always respected the market and understood the risks. He has said in many interviews that the market is the biggest teacher. If you want to learn, the market can teach you everything. But if you come with ego, the market will break you. This philosophy makes him special.
After the success of Titan, people started feeling that now everything has become easy for them. But the real truth was that nothing is ever easy in the market. A right decision takes you to the top and a wrong decision can bring you down to the ground and this phase was about to come in his life. The biggest danger after success is overconfidence and this is the mistake most people make.
But Rakesh Jhunjhunwala took this phase also as a learning. Many times in the market it happened that they placed big bets and the market went against them. His portfolio declined, he incurred losses but he did not panic because he now understood that the market is unpredictable in the short term but follows logic in the long term.
He learned to control his emotions. He understood that fear and greed are the two factors that can destroy a trader. When the market falls, people get scared and sell their good shares and when the market goes up, people get greedy and invest their money in the wrong place. But he broke this cycle. He made discipline his biggest strength.
Before every investment, he would do research, look at the company's management , look at future growth and then take a decision. This was the reason that gradually his confidence became stronger. He also understood that diversification was essential. Investing all your money in one place is the biggest risk.
So he started investing in different sectors. Sometimes pharma, sometimes banking, sometimes infrastructure. He closely observed every phase of the market. Be it boom or crash, he learned something new every time. There came a time when the market fell sharply, and many investors lost their money. People got scared.
Panic selling began. But he did what a real investor does. He bought stronger companies because he knew this was the time to make future profits. This mindset makes them different from the crowd. He always said that patience is required to make money in the market. Thinking of becoming rich quickly can make you poor.
He faced losses many times in his life but every time he came out stronger. He never let loss become his identity but made it his strength. Gradually, his name became known not just as a trader but as a smart investor. People started following his strategy. Started listening to his interviews. Started keeping an eye on his every move.
But behind this were years of hard work, discipline and the habit of continuous learning. He proved that success in the market is not achieved by one lucky trade but by consistently making the right decisions. And the most important thing he taught was that if you don't fall, you don't learn, and if you do n't learn, you can never win.
With time, his thinking became stronger and now he was not just a trader but had become a visionary investor. Investments like Titan gave him recognition in the market. But the real game was yet to come because earning a name is one thing and maintaining that name is another thing. Now everyone kept an eye on his moves.
Every decision was discussed and the pressure was higher than ever before. But he did not let this pressure dominate him. He further strengthened his rules. His simple principle was that the market is always right. Humans can be wrong. That's why he never let ego come in the way of his decisions. He further strengthened his portfolio.
He invested in quality stocks and most importantly, he made patience his biggest weapon. Over time, his investments started becoming multibaggers. One after another, companies gave him tremendous returns and gradually his journey of โน5,000 started turning into crores and then billions. People started calling him Big Bull because whenever he entered any stock, a different confidence would come in the market.
His decisions started influencing market sentiment. But he never misused this power. He always said that respect is most important in the market. If you do not respect the market, the market will teach you. His focus has always been on long term wealth creation. He learned to ignore short-term noise.
Learned to stay away from news, rumors and panic. This discipline makes him different from others. He said many times in his interviews that the biggest risk is not taking risks. But risks should also be taken wisely. Risk taken without knowledge is gambling and risk taken with knowledge is investment.
This difference makes them different from a common trader. He proved in his life that success is not achieved overnight. There are years of hard work, losses, struggles and continuous learning behind this. The value of his portfolio kept increasing and he started being counted among the biggest investors in India.
But the most special thing was that even after success, his attitude remained aggressive. He always gave priority to learning. Explored new sectors. Understand new opportunities and keep yourself updated. This was the reason why he became an investor not only for his time but also for the future. He showed that if you have passion, patience and hunger to learn, you can reach the top in any field.
And this is the reason that even today, when people hear his name, only one word comes to their mind. Big Bull. When a person leaves behind not just money but thoughts, only then he becomes a legend and Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was also one such legend who not only made money in the stock market but also taught the way of thinking to an entire generation.
As time progressed, he did not limit himself to just the market. He ventured into new sectors and expanded his vision. One of them was the aviation sector where he started XI. This decision shows that he was not just a person dependent on the past but was a person who created the future. He always identified new opportunities and took calculated risks.
This mindset makes them different. But life is not just a story of success. There are ups and downs in this also. Health issues and challenges also came up. But he never let his mindset weaken. He always remained positive. Always be confident and always keep learning. He said many times that the market teaches you something new every day.
If you are ready to learn then this attitude makes him extraordinary from an ordinary person. August 14, 2022 was an emotional day for the Indian stock market. When the news came that Big Bull is no more in this world. That day not only a person died but a thought, an inspiration, a journey also ended.
But is it really not over? Because such people never end. His teachings and his words always remain alive. Even today, when a new investor steps into the market, somewhere or the other, the teachings of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala are definitely included in his journey. He taught us that starting small is not a weakness, it is a real strength.
He taught us that one should not be afraid of loss but should learn from it. He taught us that patience is the real game changer and most importantly, he taught us that if you have courage, you can change any situation. His famous dialogue 'Risk hai toh ishq hai' is not just a line but a philosophy, an attitude that should be there in every person who wants to do something big in life.
Today he is not among us but his impact is there in every person who dares to dream and is determined to fulfill them. This is his real legacy, this is his real victory and this is his real identity. Big Bull is not just a name, it is a mindset, it is an inspiration and it will always remain so.
