We've got a news flash for you, guys: it turns out people who invest in gold are actually smart. How you doing, everybody? Welcome to Empire Precious Metals. Thank you so much for tuning in. Today I want to talk about that shiny yellow stuff. I love talking about gold, and I wanted to discuss a recent article I came across featuring another financial guru and expert, Jim Cramer. For those of you just tuning in, or who have followed the channel for the last few years, I've recently been posting a series of videos about multi-millionaire and billionaire investors. Some of them say buying silver and gold is a horrible idea, and others say you should constantly be buying it.
For those who don't know Jim Cramer, he's a TV personality on CNBC and a multi-millionaire. He's hosted his show *Mad Money* for a couple of decades, where he gives people stock tips. But he actually says buying gold is a smart move. I want to jump straight into a video I found of Jim Cramer talking about how important it is to buy gold, and then we'll come back here. This article came out June 15th, 2022, so it was published recently. The headline says Jim Cramer makes this smart investment in times of inflation and economic chaos. I wonder what he's talking about. I'll play a short piece of the video, pause it, and give you my thoughts.
Listen to what Jim Cramer thinks about gold and inflation. We have inflation, and it's so bad that everyone at the Federal Reserve and the money managers have realized their concern. I believe in gold, and gold goes up and holds its value in a recession.
So Jim Cramer believes gold holds its value in a recession. He says there are three things that hold their value in inflation and do okay in a recession: master-work paintings, incredible mansions, and gold. You can own gold in a few ways. One is a GDX, an exchange-traded fund that tracks gold miners' stocks. He's talking about buying stock in companies that trade gold, which the stacking community doesn't really believe in. We believe in actually holding physical gold. Jim Cramer talks about reasons you should hold physical gold, but he also covers some drawbacks.
Second, you can own gold funds. There are usually junior and senior funds. I own a senior gold fund. Or you can buy physical gold. The problem with physical gold is that it could get stolen, so you have to pay for a safety deposit box. Many safety deposit boxes are going the way of the past. A lot of banks are getting out of that business and don't want them anymore. But physical gold is still the cheapest way to do it, and even with the deposit box charge, it's important.
So there you have it. Jim Cramer believes in owning gold. He didn't really say he owned physical gold, but he does belong to a gold fund. Again, at least he's making the case that you should own gold. The article I'll link below mentions 8.6 percent inflation, and he says something along the lines of owning around five percent of your portfolio in gold. Many people in the stacking community think you should own more. Personally, I think you should have more than five percent of your overall portfolio in gold, but that's just me. You have to do what's best for you.
Let's hop back to the desk. Jim Cramer thinks owning gold is a good idea, so it's reassuring to hear that people who stack aren't on the wrong track.
What always confuses me about the investors who say you shouldn't buy any silver or gold is that they also say you shouldn't have all your eggs in one basket and should diversify. So why wouldn't they put any money into silver or gold as an insurance policy, if you will? I've always scratched my head over these individuals. Obviously they know a lot. They wouldn't be worth hundreds of millions of dollars if they didn't know what they were doing, and who am I to say they're wrong? But the fact that they don't own any metals is really shocking to me. I don't think it's good sound investing to hold no precious metals at all in your portfolio.
Depending on how much you invest, it's really up to each individual. Some people think you should have ten percent, some think fifteen. Many people in the stacking community probably have much more of their net worth in precious metals because they distrust banks and the government, and they fear inflation and economic collapse.
So let me know in the comments: do you agree with Jim Cramer, or do you think he isn't invested in enough gold? Let us know below.
