He was asked why he keeps all his money on paper, i.e., in the stock market, and why he never invests in property. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala smiled upon hearing this. A few days later, fulfilling his man 's wish, he bought a flat in the area. In 2004, the price of this flat was 27 crore rupees. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala sold 27 crore rupees worth of CRISIL shares to buy this flat.
11 years later, in 2015, Rakesh sold that flat for 48 crore rupees, making a profit of 21 crore rupees. But you will be shocked to know that if Rakesh Jhunjhunwala had not sold 27 crore rupees worth of CRISIL shares in 2004, those shares would have been worth 700 crore rupees in 2015, along with a dividend of 50 crore rupees.
At present, a few crores do not matter to a giant like Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, but from this incident, you can understand the power of investing. Similarly, we are going to look at Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's stock market journey and how he made a profit in the stock market. You'll see which streets he chose in this video.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala constantly listened to his father discuss the stock market with his friends because he was very curious about stocks. So, he once asked his father why stock prices fluctuate daily. His father advised him to read newspapers because newspapers contain news that can cause stock prices to fluctuate.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala also expressed a desire to pursue a career in the stock market, but his father advised him to first obtain a graduate degree from a college. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala graduated from college as a chartered accountant in 1985. After graduation, he discussed his career in the stock market with his father.
His father replied that he was allowed to pursue any career, but he also said that he would not be given any money, nor could he ask for money from any of his father's friends. Then, in 1985, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala invested only ₹5,000 in the Kisan Stock Market. However, soon Rakesh Jhunjhunwala took 2.5 million rupees from his brother's client, promising him better returns than HD.
Then came Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's first profit, which was 0.5 million rupees in 1986. He bought 5,000 shares of Data Science at 43, and within three months, it was trading at 143. He more than tripled his profit by selling the stocks. Over the next few years, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala earned substantial profits from stocks.
Between 1986 and 1989, he earned 20 to 25 lakh rupees. His next major investment was Sago, which he initially bought at 28 rupees and increased his investment at 35 rupees. HD stock soon reached 65 rupees. He then sold it, earning 20 to 25 lakh rupees. Then, the Harshad Mehta era began, and it generated both profits and losses.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwala invested in several multi-bagger stocks. He bought Titan Company Limited between 2002 and 2003 at a price of ₹3, and as you know, it is currently trending around ₹2700. He owns over 44 million shares of Titan. As of March 2022, his stake in the company was 5.1%. Then, in 2006, he invested in Lupin, whose share price at that time was ₹150.
Today, its share price is trading around ₹770. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's portfolio also includes some other multi-bagger companies like Raj India, Arvindo Pharma, NCC, and many more, which you can see in this portfolio. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has invested in the stocks of 36 companies. If we look at the sectors, he has invested 34% in the jewellery sector and 24% in the insurance sector.
Similarly, he has invested heavily in automobiles, banks, credit rating agencies, healthcare, and software. Now, let's see what his strategies were for investing in the stock market. Initially, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala believed in businesses, not stocks. You should focus on buying stocks, so don't focus on the price at which you're buying the stock; instead, focus on the business of the company you're buying.
For example, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's favorite company, Titan Company, saw a 10% rise between December 16, 2021, and January 16, 2022. Yet, he closed December. This is because he was buying businesses, not stocks. The second strategy is that if we look closely at Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's portfolio, he has invested in Indian macroeconomics.
This is a well-thought-out strategy. As you know, India's population is growing rapidly. As the standard of living rises, people will demand health and healthcare for a good life. This means that there will always be demand for these stocks, and their prices will always rise. Although he had many more stocks, but we'll look at them in another video.
