A boy landed on Draas Street with only Rs 5000. He had no godfather [in music] , no family business, but his father had clearly told him, I will not give even ₹1 and do not ask for money from any [in music] friend also. Imagine if today your father stops you like this before starting a business, would you give up?

But that boy did not give up. After 30 years, the same ₹5000 became ₹46,000 crores. His name was Rakesh Jhunjhunwala India's Big Bull. But the story wasn't just about money. This is the story of a risk that changed the definition of the entire Indian stock market. In which he saw a share of ₹25 going up to ₹2200.

His secret still surprises people. Rakesh was born on 5 July 1966 in a simple Marwari middle class home in Mumbai. Father Radheshyam Jhunjhunwala who was an Income Tax Officer . Since childhood, Rakesh used to hear one thing every day. Father discussing the stock market with his friends , shares, profits, losses, market crashes, all these things.

For a small child, this was not just talk. It was like magic and from here was born a passion which later shook the entire Indian market . But father never taught me directly. One day little Rakesh asked, why does the market go up and down every day? The father replied, start reading the newspaper. You will understand yourself why this happens.

This is where a habit [of music] began that stayed with him throughout his life. Doing your own research, thinking for yourself, never going with the crowd [musically] , making decisions that are different from the crowd. He completed his Chartered Accountancy studies from Sydenham College. Now it was time to choose a career.

Most people would have heard of a stable CA job but the only thing on Rakesh's mind was the stock market. He talked to his father. The father agreed but also put a condition which would have broken any normal person. He said, son, career is your choice. But never ask me for even a single penny for this and never talk to any friend or relative for capital.

Just imagine you are 25 years old. You have no [musical] capital or experience and you have the entire stock market in front of you. Where millions of people lose money every day. This is what most people fear. But Rakesh took it as a challenge. He took ₹5,000 from his savings and headed towards Dalal Street.

At that time the Sensex was only at 150 points . Guess where the Sensex has gone today and then borrowed about ₹2.5 lakh from one of my brother's clients . With the promise of giving higher returns than fixed deposits. A 25-year-old guy with no experience made such a promise to an unknown client. Where did this confidence come from?

1986 Rakesh makes his first big move. He bought 5000 shares of Tata T. At a share price of just ₹43. Everyone thought this was a normal trade. But what happened in the next 3 months changed Rakesh's life. The price of Tata T increased from ₹43 to ₹143. The money tripled in just 3 months. Profit of around ₹5 lakh.

In 1986, this amount was equivalent to crores of rupees today. In the next 3 years Rakesh earned around ₹20 to ₹25 lakhs through his smart trades. From here his name started spreading in the market. A new young trader who had more vision than the veteran. Now comes the story I mentioned in the beginning.

Late 1980 Seesagawa, an iron and exporting company. Rakesh took a gamble that a normal investor would never even think of . A legendary bet. Meaning taking a bigger risk by borrowing money. He bought shares of CIS Goa which were trading at ₹25 to ₹26 a share and then the stock started taking off. ₹35, ₹65, ₹80 and it kept going on.

Imagine a share of ₹26 and it went up to ₹2200. Profit of about 85 times. Eventually the price reached ₹2200 per share. Imagine a share of ₹26 becoming ₹2200. This was a return of up to 85 times. Rakesh did not sell the entire stock at once. They sold it in tranches to maximize profit. It wasn't just luck.

It's patience, timing and nerve control that sets a genuine trader apart from the rest . From here he got the name in the market, The Big Bull of India. But an interesting fact is that Rakesh [Sangeet] has not always been bullish. He was also a Bear early in his career. That means he had made money even from the market crash.

He had also done work with Beer Cartel. When others lose everything in the crash. Rakesh learned to read the market direction and whether it went up or down, he learned to make money. He knew how to make money. This unique quality made him different from other investors. He didn't just buy stocks. He depended on the moods of the market and the moods would influence him.

Now let's talk about the investment that truly made Rakesh a legend. Rakesh had bought shares of Titan Company at the share price of ₹3. Think where the price of Titan has gone today. The stock kept rising year after year and reached ₹3000 per share. That means he got more than 1000 times return from Titan alone.

He held this stock for years without panicking or selling it. This was his biggest strength – conviction. When everyone else sells out when they make a small profit. Rakesh stayed year after year because he had full faith in the company's business. He had bet on that. He also played early downs in companies like CRISIL, Lupin, Aurobindo Pharma, NCC, [Sangeet] VIP Industries, Horstic Healthcare and every time his thought was a small but heart touching thing Rakesh [Sangeet] formed his own private trading firm which he named Rare Enterprises.

Where did this name come from? There is a small story behind this also. Rare Enterprises is formed by combining the initials R of Rakesh's name and R of Rekha's name, that is, his name and the name of his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala. He married Rekha [Sangeet] in 1987 and has always been there for her in every success story.

Naming a billion dollar empire after his wife was the true identity of Rakesh. Not just a trader but a good human being. 2020 was the toughest year for the whole world, the COVID crash that broke the market. Rakesh's portfolio value in March 2020 was ₹8431 crore. Most investors were in panic mode. They were selling stocks.

But Rakesh did what he always did. He found opportunities amidst fear and as a result, in just 2 years, by August 2022, his portfolio had reached ₹6,000 crore. According to an analysis, 76% of his total wealth was created in the last 7 years of his life and the biggest jump came between 2020 and 2022.

That is, those who think that success is achieved only in youth. This story of Rakesh proves him wrong. But he didn't just stick to stock . In 2022, in the last years of his life, he saw a new dream. of its own airlines. Along with former IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh, he co-founded Akasa Air, an ultra low-cost airline in which Rakesh held around 40% stake.

A trader who once built an empire with stocks and was building his own company . This shows that his appetite for risk never ended. 14 August 2022 Rakesh Jhunjhunwala passes away at the age of 62 , just days after launching ASA Airlines. At that time, his net worth was around $5.8 billion which put him on the list of the world's richest.

In 2023 the Government of India honoured him posthumously with the Padma Shri Award. But his greatest legacy wasn't just money. That was his thinking, one of his famous dialogues. The future of India is brighter than the sun. A man who started with 5000. Even today it is an example for millions of new investors.

Friends, this was the story of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. Journey from ₹5000 to ₹46,000 crore. But the question isn't how much money did they have [for music] in the beginning? The question is, do you have the courage that this 25-year-old boy showed despite his father's condition?
