hey everyone and welcome back for another deep dive today um we're going to be talking about Transportation M the future of it at least specifically because of Bill Amman big money Bill yeah bill amman's made a huge investment in Uber yeah a really really big one and we're trying to figure out why and what that means for all of us right so uh we're looking at this article called Bill akman Uber and 2024 okay it's in French but basically what it means is that amman's going all in on Uber gotcha so we're going to look at Uber's performance and like what that means for the future of transportation makes sense okay so Bill Amman for anyone who doesn't follow the market super closely right he runs perching Square Capital Management so it's a big deal where he puts his money and people definitely notice and right now his biggest bet is Uber it's a big one $2.3 billion wow yeah so we got to figure out why okay well I think a good place to start would be Uber's recent performance their Q4 2024 numbers were really impressive okay how so well they had record bookings of$ 44.2 billion that's a lot of money but I mean honestly big Revenue numbers don't always tell the whole story yeah that's true what about profitability that's a really good point like that's what investors really care about right yeah yeah absolutely and that's actually where it gets interesting because Uber actually doubled their free cash flow this quarter okay so that's something that I definitely need you to break down for me okay sure what does that mean for a company like uber and why would it get an investor like Amman so excited okay well free cash flow is basically the money a company has left over after paying for its operating expenses and capital expenditures okay so it's the cash they have available to invest back in the business pay dividends buy back stock or just keep as a cushion and for a company like uber which hasn't always been known for its profitability right doubling free catch flow is a really big deal okay yeah that makes sense it signals a potential shift towards sustainable profits right and for investors like Amman that's music to their ears yeah so it's not just about growth anymore it's about proving they can actually make money exactly which makes them a much more attractive long-term investment right speaking of which Uber's CEO daros Rahi mhm he said some pretty bold statements in the report oh yeah calling it their best quarter ever and claiming the company is undervalued MHM is that just like CEO hype or is there something to it well you know it's always easy to be optimistic when you have a record-breaking quarter under your belt sure but looking at the numbers it's hard to argue with the fact that Uber is in a strong position okay they're growing they're becoming more profitable and they're sitting on a lot of cash okay so on the surface things look pretty Rosy for Uber yeah but there's this looming question of autonomous vehicles like AVS right isn't that whole self-driving car thing a Potential Threat to Uber's entire business model right if the cars can drive themselves then who needs a ride hailing app right that's the billion dollar question yeah and it's definitely something that any investor in Uber has to consider for sure but what's interesting is that Uber isn't running away from AVS really yeah they're actually embracing them but in a very strategic way okay so they're not trying to build their own self-driving car from scratch like some other companies are exactly they're taking a partnership approach okay and they're collaborating with a stablished players in the AV space mhm so for example they teamed up with we rde to launch a self-driving taxi service in Abu Dhabi interesting and they're also working with motional on Robo taxis in Las Vegas okay so they're spreading their bets and working with different companies to see what sticks right is that a good strategy or does it make them vulnerable well that's a valid concern it's a delicate Balancing Act for Uber they need to stay on The Cutting Edge of Av technology right but they also need to protect their own interests I see It's Tricky yeah and how exactly do these Partnerships work wow like are they just letting other companies handle the self-driving part while Uber provides the platform and the customers it's a little more nuanced than that they're not just providing the platform they're also contributing their expertise in areas like mapping routing and Logistics I see and they're also working with Partners on things like Fleet Management and safety protocols okay and what about Nvidia yeah yes I know they're a big player in the world of AI and self-driving technology right so what role are they playing in all of this well the Nvidia partnership is a really fascinating one they're working together to develop the core technology that powers self-driving systems okay and Nvidia brings their expertise in gpus which are specialized processors that excel at the kind of comple calculations needed for autonomous driving so it's like the brains of the operation yeah exactly so Uber's taking a multi- prompt approach to this whole AV thing and it sounds like they're really trying to position themselves as like the go-to platform for all things Transportation yeah whether it's a human driver or a self-driving car exactly and that brings us back to Bill Amman and his massive investment right so we've got this company with strong financials a huge customer base yep and a strategic IC vision for the future of Transportation mhm is that enough to justify a $2.3 billion bet that's a good question yeah let's dig into amman's rationale in the next part of our Deep dive sounds good I think to understand amman's thinking we have to remember that he's known for his long-term bets yeah he's not looking for like a quick flip right exactly he wants companies that can dominate their Industries for years to come MH and with Uber he might be seeing the early stages of that kind of potential so he's not just looking at today's numbers he's trying to predict where the whole Transportation landscape is headed right and he thinks Uber is going to be in the driver's seat so to speak yeah but is that a sure thing like there's got to be some serious challenges ahead right oh absolutely no investment is without risk especially in a field as dynamic as Transportation yeah for sure and I think one major hurdle is the regulatory landscape mhm you know rules for ride hailing let alone AVS are all over the map yeah that make sense different cities different countries each with their own laws and regulations it's not like they could just launch self-driving cars everywhere at once right exactly they to navigate a whole web of bureaucracy yeah so how does that factor into amman's calculations well ammin is probably banking on Uber's experience in this area you know they've been battling Regulators since their Inception so they've built up a certain level of expertise in dealing with these challenges so they've got the Battle Scars to prove they can handle it yeah you could say that but regulations aren't the only obstacle are they no definitely not what about the competition Uber is not the only player in this game right there's lift lify in the US Dei in China bolt in Europe yeah and probably countless smaller companies exactly all vying for market share and plus you can't forget about the potential for entirely new competitors to emerge that's true this Market is constantly evolving yeah and what about Tesla oh yes they've been making a lot of noise about their self-driving Ambitions Tesla is is definitely a wild card in all of this yeah they have the technology the brand recognition and the loyal customer base to make a serious impact on the ride hailing and AV market so even with amman's vote of confidence it's not a guaranteed win for Uber right they've got to outmaneuver some tough competition they do but here's where things get really fascinating okay beyond the immediate competition there's this bigger picture question of how Uber's success could reshape the entire Transportation landscape okay now you've got me intrigued yeah what kind of Ripple effects are we talking about here well think about the potential impact on car ownership okay if ride hailing and self-driving taxis become affordable and convenient enough people might start to question the need for owning a car at all wow yeah especially in urban areas right exactly that's a huge shift it is and what happens to all the parking lots and garages right do cities suddenly become a lot more walkable and bikable potentially yeah it's almost like a domino effect it is and then there are the potential environmental benefits oh right fewer cars on the road exactly less congestion less pollution and a reduced carbon footprint of course that depends on the energy sources used to power those self-driving fleets right of course but still it's a big potential benefit it is so Uber is not just disrupting the taxi industry they're potentially disrupting the entire way we design and interact with our cities yeah it's a big idea it's almost too big to wrap your head around I know it's mindboggling it is it really is and it's one of the reasons why this whole Space is so exciting oh really is but it also raises some important questions right what about like will these benefits be distributed evenly that's a great question yeah Will everyone have access to these new Transportation options or will it create a divide between those who can afford them and those who can't yeah that's a crucial point you know technology has a way of exacerbating existing inequalities if we're not careful right so how do we ensure that the transition to a more autonomous future is Equitable and benefits everyone that is the million doll question and it's one that we need to be thinking about right now not 10 years from now when these Technologies are fully mature though sure we need to be having these conversations now absolutely Okay so we've got this incredibly complex landscape evolving technology shifting regulations Fierce competition and these huge sdal implications that's a lot it is so where does AC investment fit into all of this what's he actually betting on it seems like he's betting on Uber's ability to navigate all of these complexities and emerge as a leader in the new Transportation Paradigm he's betting on their ability to adapt inov and to scale their platform to meet the evolving needs of a changing world so is he right well is Uber going to be the next Transportation Titan that's the big question yeah it is and we'll try to answer it as we continue our deep dive so we've talked about like Uber's performance and their strategy right and how they could change like the whole Transportation landscape yeah it's a big Vision but the question is can they actually pull it off yeah is Bill Amman right to put so much faith in them exact is his bet GNA pay off or is he like overestimating uber yeah in this crazy Market well as we've said there're definitely some big challenges ahead for Uber yeah like what well the regulations are a big one right and the competition is fierce and then there are the ethical things to consider yeah all of that could really mess up their plans it could it's not just about the technology either it's about understanding how people behave and like adapting to the regulations yeah and being able to like see problems coming before they happen exactly and that's where I think Uber's recent moves are interesting like what well like their decision to bring traditional taxis into their platform oh it shows they're willing to change and adapt yeah I see what you mean it's like they know the future might not be just one winner mhm they're creating a platform that can handle lots of ways to get around yeah not just ride hailing right exactly and I think that flexibility could be really important as things keep changing like what if self-driving cars take longer than we think where some places don't allow them yeah exactly Uber will still have all those other services so they're not putting all their eggs in one basket right exactly they've got options and that brings us to like another another part of amman's thinking what's that Uber has a ton of users yeah they do over 170 million worldwide that's a lot of potential customers oh yeah for anything new they try self-driving taxi delivery robots whatever they can think of it's like they've already got the customers ready right and that's hard for other companies to compete with yeah it's like a barrier to entry exactly okay so strong financials a plan for the future right tons of users and a willingness to change it's a good case for Uber's future it is but the big question is yeah is Amman right is Uber really going to like rule Transportation honestly I don't think anyone knows for sure yeah it's all changing so fast it's hard to predict so what should we be looking for well I think the key is whether they can actually do what they're talking about yeah they have a big plan they do but can they make it happen can they integrate the new tech handle the regulations stay Ahad head of the competition and do all that while making sure it's good for everyone yeah that's the tough part it's a lot to juggle it is this is what makes it so interesting though yeah it is it's not just about money and Technology right it's about how we all get around and that affects all of us so as we wrap up our Deep dive on Bill amman's big bed on Uber mhm here's something to think about okay pay attention to what's happening to the trends ask questions because the future is happening now now we all have a part in it we do this has been really interesting yeah I always learn something on these deep Dives me too like thanks for listening everyone
