After losing my father and then failing in Class 10, I decided to make my career in the stock market to support my family of five. Somehow I completed my graduation and started trading with my grandfather until I turned 19, and then I joined the Kolkata Stock Exchange. My dream was my only education, hope was my only capital, and perseverance was my only guide.
Initially I was very successful and had some beginner's luck, but that soon started fading after I indulged in future trading. For 10 years I still did not have any savings. The situation was so bad that I was once unable to arrange 14 rupees to buy milk powder for my son. This made me realize that the stock market is a place where you make the easiest money in the hardest way. Every time, I lost all the money made from 10 small trades in one big trade. Once the situation was so severe that I was about to sell my mother's jewelry to pay off my losses. That taught me a very valuable lesson about stop-loss.
I realized that Rome was not built in a day, but Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed in a day. I decided to change my approach and started focusing on investing. At that time there were no business channels to share news and information, no internet to share free investing knowledge, and no conferences or campaigns like this to create awareness. The only method available was trial and error, so I followed that. At the same time, one of the most important additional tools I used was observing successful investors and following their style. I also tried to learn from their mistakes.
My ambition was to move to Bombay and try my luck at the Bombay Stock Exchange, the investors' paradise. But due to lack of capital and contacts, I had to return after two failed attempts. One day, sitting in Kolkata, I told myself that it is better to die in the ocean than to die in the hut. I took a third attempt, and this time luck favored me. Here I became a full-fledged investor. I had understood that investing is a business and that the market rewards you according to your perception. If you treat it as a gambling den, it will prove a gamble for you.
With every successful investment, my dream started becoming bigger. After securing my monthly expenses through other sources of income outside the stock market, I started taking bigger positions in companies. I had realized that the stock market is like an ocean: some come here to get their feet wet, some to fish, and some to explore minerals. The deeper you go, the riskier it becomes, but the reward is also very high. I was ready to take the risk, but to calculate it with proper planning, discipline, and safety.
I read the story of the bamboo tree. After sowing the seed, no green shoots are visible above the ground for 4 to 4.5 years. But after that, the seed suddenly breaks through the ground and becomes a 40-foot-tall tree within the next 6 months. So what was the seed doing for 4.5 years? It was growing underground, building a strong base to sustain the weight of a 40 to 50-feet-tall tree for the next 40 to 50 years. This is the story and reward of long-term investing in the stock market.
If you are focused, have the courage to take a calculated risk with a proper margin of safety, and have patience, you are on the path to becoming a successful investor. I wish all investors the very best in their lives. I'm sure this World Investor Week will help you change your perspective on investing in a very positive and profitable way.
In the end, I would like to recite a few lines of a song I wrote and sang, dedicated to my motherly Bombay Stock Exchange.
