This is a kind of unique, perhaps once-in-a-generation development. We will see significant productivity gains. And in fact, this is exactly how national wealth can be increased—through increased productivity. This administration supports open source models, but we do not support intellectual property theft.
And if we see foreign models stealing from our big companies, we have the ability to impose sanctions against them for it. This was Treasury Secretary Scott Bass, who was with me yesterday, talking about the AI boom and the threat to national security , as top executives at American AI companies sound the alarm about Chinese models.
We're having an artificial intelligence week here at Morning with Maria. All week long, we're taking a look at the most important companies and people behind the massive AI infrastructure and investment boom, including investments in the field. With me now is one of the leading investors in the field of AI .
Her company manages over $30 billion in assets and was an early investor in SpaceX, and its number one investment is Tesla. But she was an investor in SpaceX even before the high-profile IPO. And I'm joined by Arc Invest CEO Katie Wood herself. Katie, nice to see you. Thank you very much for being here.
How do you assess this race with China? I know you said AI is a huge investment opportunity, but right now we're worried about these new models from China, their "moon project" in the pre-IPO stage with a $50 billion valuation. How do you assess this situation? Well, we think it's good for America—this competition.
We perform best when we compete. We took a close look at the DeepSeek and Kimmy K, the newest model, and found that they cost much less. But they are also much less effective. So China is simply putting a huge amount of power into the AI equation, and their models are not as effective as ours. We are limited in energy resources.
Yes. I want to know your opinion on investing in this area, because there are so many different opportunities here: whether it's AI and models, or semiconductors, or energy. SpaceX is one of your main assets, and you are increasing your stake in SpaceX. You added over $80 million after the IPO. SpaceX shares are currently below their IPO price , at just over $123 .
The company will unlock another $116 billion in shares next month after IPO restrictions are lifted. Katie, what are your thoughts on SpaceX, given that the stock has fallen 33% in the last month? Yes, at its peak it is , but of course not at the IPO price. Um, we think this could be the most important company in history.
And I mean in world history, because we're talking not only about the actual exploration of a new world, the universe, in terms of the possibilities of launching and helping others, but also about a global communication network. Really, think about telecommunications, it was a very local business. In fact, historically the way to enter the markets of other countries was to buy a local telecommunications operator.
No more; This is a global business, and SpaceX is a pioneer, having 75% of all satellites in orbit. And in addition, we have global data centers or orbital data centers. So they will be the most economical and will give Elon and his team the opportunity to develop what we believe are some of the most complex advanced models in the world at the lowest cost.
So the opportunities are huge, and meanwhile, on Earth, SpaceX is leasing its data centers to Anthropic, Google, and others. So, this is an amazing story. You know, it's interesting because you just mentioned the telecommunications industry. We'll be speaking with the CEO of AT&T soon. And when you compare AT&T to SpaceX, both connect people, but they have radically different technologies, economics, and approaches.
How would you compare SpaceX to telecommunications carriers, particularly AT&T? Well, I think in the short term SpaceX can make deals with operators around the world, but in the long term, it plans to go directly to consumers or businesses. And it will be significantly cheaper as it scales, because it will be a global network.
And the secret to scaling technology is to reduce costs as volumes increase. So, you know, it's interesting that in the space industry, SpaceX has a first-mover advantage. This will be very difficult to catch up with. In fact, they have a ten-year lead. And the key to this was reusable missiles. 10 years ago, they first landed a rocket and then sent it into orbit.
No other company has managed to do this successfully. Even Blue Origin landed late last year . So we congratulate them, and we are very happy about it. We want this race to continue and we want to see a lot of players. But it was unable to successfully enter the desired orbit. However, it still restarted.
Katie, so many companies are implementing AI into their internal processes and customer interactions. We spoke with BNY CEO Robin Vince about how he's transforming the way his bank works with AI . Look. This is an extremely powerful technology, but the main thing is its implementation. And this is a key question, because technology has already reached such a level that for all of us, in private life or in corporations, the main struggle is how to integrate it more deeply so that it becomes part of every workflow in the company?
So we created our own platform. Her name is Eliza. Returning to our history. Wife of Alexander Hamilton. We have agent developers in our company. We conducted training for everyone. We spend 10, 20, 30, 40 hours on training. We really help people master AI. We already have over 200 solutions in production.
And we truly believe that AI can become a superpower for the company and its employees. So, Katie, I want to hear your thoughts on AI and how you invest in it. You said that AI would be the biggest investment opportunity of our lifetime. What industries do you think AI will change first, and how are you investing in this AI topic ?
Yes. Well, I think the first thing companies do is invest in productivity through AI. So from an active capital management perspective, this is very important. When communicating with companies, we want to understand exactly how they are implementing AI. For example, in ARK we use Palantir. Paradoxically, we are attracting more talent, very young professionals who are “digital natives ” in the field of AI.
And I agree that it's a change in mindset. Therefore, I think it is very important for every company to take this seriously. But if you look more broadly, at global transformation, yes. If any company is clinging to old ways of doing things, I think healthcare—and I know you've been doing stories about medicine and AI—is the most compelling area for AI: in terms of drug development, where it cuts time and costs; in terms of diagnosis, detection and definition of diseases, perhaps even before any symptoms appear.
As sequencing and AI technologies come together, adding to this CRISPR gene editing, we see treatments for disease, so the convergence of these three technologies is transforming healthcare. Yes, and you know, we also delved deeply into the defense sector. I mean, another industry that's going through a complete fundamental change is defense technology, how we're getting ahead of China.
The White House is reportedly considering further restrictions on companies using AI models from Beijing. This week we had Seronic CEO, Dino Mukus, on the defensive race. That's what he said. We don't have to beat China in the traditional sense: let's go and build what they're building. We are going to defeat China in a new way.
We are going to surpass China in terms of production volume , creating autonomous ships. Building the future of the maritime industry, software- defined platforms, new shipyards that are more efficient than China's, and holding them back with asymmetric capabilities— ships that can be built cheaper, faster, and managed by software.
We don't need to build 1,200- foot container ships. We certainly can and will do that at Port Alpha, but that is not necessarily the deterrence that our military expects, and that is what we will provide. Katie, where do you see the biggest opportunities in defense technology right now? And are you concerned about all this money being invested in AI, as people ask when we'll see a return on investment?
Well, of course, the question is that the government is funding a lot of this, and what will the real profitability be in the end? This administration is serious about getting us back in the game, and I completely agree. And actually, this is the broader thesis that the CEO of Seronic is making; This applies to all production.
So we're going to do to them what they did to us in telecommunications, which is they went straight into wireless. They didn't need to build fixed lines of communication. And they did the same thing with digital wallets. They went directly to WeChat Pay rather than the traditional banking system. So, they jumped us.
Meanwhile, they took away our manufacturing sector. Now we will do to them what they did to us in these two areas. We are moving into a new world. We have, you know, a lot of green zones, and we're bringing manufacturing back, and I think we're going to be ahead of China, because they actually have old technology now, built over the last 25 years.
Katie, what's your favorite AI-related stock right now ? Well, it has to be Tesla. And ultimately, I think it will be SpaceX when they merge. This is the most powerful company. You have the option of creating a robotaxi. And the possibility of an orbital data center. And I think a lot of people underestimate not only Optimus, which is of course an AI project, but also what used to be xAI and now SpaceX AI, and it's a cutting-edge model.
So there are many opportunities, and they are multi-trillion dollar opportunities. That's what I think surprises people—seeing Anthropic grow its annual revenue from $9 billion to $47 billion in six months. This is amazing. Six months. This is really wild. That's true. And I know that Tesla is your main asset.
Katie, it's always nice to chat. Thank you very much. Thank you, Maria. Katie Wood was with us.
