Here is the stock classification according to Peter Lins. Peter Lins is a fund manager in the US who manages the Maglan mutual fund at Fidelity, whose returns have outperformed the US market with an average growth of 29.2% per year from 1977 to 1990. In his book, Peter Lins classifies stocks into six categories.
The first is slow growers. Slow Growers are companies with low profit growth which can be caused by losing out to competition or having their market share taken by competitors. For example, Unilever. Unilever's sales and net profit have tended to stagnate since 2017. The increase in net profit in 2018 was due to the profit on the sale of intangible assets so that Unilever's profit will appear to have grown at a glance .
Well, the second category is Stalw. Stalwor is a mature company that is usually a market leader but its growth has begun to be limited. For example, Telcom. The third category is Fest Grower. Fast Grower is a company whose sales and profit growth is consistently high. Shares in this category are shares that are highly favored by the market, so shares in this category will usually be valued higher by the market .
For example ADES. ADES' sales and net profit were able to grow very significantly. In fact, ADES's net profit has been able to grow at an average growth rate of 147% per year since 2018. Now, the fourth category is Ciklikal. Cyclical is a company whose sales and net profit increases are influenced by its cycle.
For example, commodity companies. In this example, we use ITMG, a coal company, where ITMG's net profit is in line with the increase and decrease in its average selling price. The high and low ASP is influenced by the coal price index, where in 2020 coal prices were at their lowest point. Meanwhile, in 2022, coal prices were at their highest point.
So, the fifth category is play assets. Asset plays are companies that the market values too cheaply. The market values a stock too cheaply because the company is in trouble. Whether it is a temporary or permanent problem. Typically, stocks in this category have quality assets such as cash and cash equivalents that are greater than their market cap.
For example, the total building of Persada or TOTL. In May 2022, TOTL was valued at IDR 298 per share with a market cap of IDR 1.16 billion. At that time, its cash position, tar, and short-term investments alone were more than its market cap. Totl is undervalued because the construction sector was one of the most depressed sectors during the pandemic, causing the market to become pessimistic about the prospects of construction companies like TOTL, which is reflected in the decline in its share price.
And within 1 year, precisely in May 2023, TOTL's share price had risen 50%, according to the target price I previously shared on stockbit. Well, the last category is turn around. A down round is a company that initially had poor performance or even made a loss, but was then able to turn things around and become profitable.
Well, this process is called turn around. Stocks in this category can provide very high returns. Because if a stock manages to turn around, stocks in this category can become fast-growing stocks. For example MAPA. Mapa is a real company that sells various products such as shoes, clothing, and sports equipment.
In 2020, MAP's net profit decreased by 99.7% from 687 billion in 2019 to 2 billion in 2020. This decline in performance was caused by the pandemic which caused the economy to slow down and people were unable to leave their homes, resulting in MAP outlets such as Planet Sport Asia being deserted by visitors.
However, after the pandemic was over and people began to return to normal activities, Mapa's sales and net profit began to recover. In fact, MAP's net profit in 2023 has doubled compared to before the pandemic. As a result, MAPA's share price has appreciated by up to 546% compared to 2020. What do you think?
