Zoom on the economy with the support of the Valet cantonal bank. Bitcoin, the name may not mean anything to you, yet the market for this electronic currency is flourishing. Its value has more than doubled in less than a year. So how can we explain this phenomenon? Behind this new generation currency lies François de Rine Maté, this issue, and we discuss it with two guests.
Laurence Sibau, good evening. Good evening. You are responsible for the Institute of Computer Science and Management at HSO Vallée and by your side is Étienne Marietto. Good evening. Good evening. You are the IT manager at the Valallet Cantonal Bank . So, we're going to start the discussion right away, but before we hear from you, I suggest you take a look at this visual reminder of the issues.
2017 is shaping up to be the year of Bitcoin. On Monday, this virtual cryptocurrency reached one of its highest levels in 3 years, $790 per unit, representing an 80% increase in just one year. Proof of this resounding entry into the pantheon of International Monophonies, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/CFF) have been offering the purchase of Bitcoin in more than 1000 branded ATMs since last November.
A true consecration for this alternative to cash which allows funds to be moved quickly and anonymously all over the world and all without transactions going through a central authority. But this famous electronic currency also has its dark side, such as its volatility. In 2013, Bitcoin rose to over $1000 before collapsing to $150 in early 2015.
Bitcoin, a currency with a complex definition, is both adored and criticized. But one thing is certain, it is now an integral part of the global economy. In total, all Bitcoin on the market represents a market capitalization of $12.7 billion. So, Laurent Sibau, as we understand, Bitcoin is a relatively complex monetary system; in simple terms, how does it work?
It has been working since 2009. It was launched by Satoso Nakamishi, a researcher, a group of researchers who are still very anonymous, we still don't know who launched the computer protocols called the blockchain in English and everything is based on this blockchain. You can put contracts on it, you can put money into it and you see it's a phenomenal success.
And this blockchain, it doesn't belong to anyone. It is freely available to the public, everyone can access it, and it is thanks to this that we can create a land registry. This allows for disintermediation in a classic way, whether in energy, health, other areas, or digital currencies. So. So, how exactly do we get hold of it ?
If I am interested in buying Bitcoin, how do I go about it? And who are the people who primarily use it today? So, you can do this since 2009. We take the canton of Tsug which now accepts payment of its taxes in Bitcoin. We have the example of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) that we just saw; it is used all over the world.
For example, you can now go to a SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) ticket machine. You simply take your smartphone, put money in the SBB ATM and you get Bitcoin which is converted on your smartphone to make other purchases anywhere in the world. Used by individuals and businesses. Absolutely. That's the case.
more and more. So, what's interesting is that there is no regulatory authority. It doesn't belong to anyone. This blockchain ledger on which Bitcoin is based is available to everyone. It's open source. As in 1996, we had this new protocol, uh, the internet protocol, uh, uh, the hypertext transfer protocol.
And it is thanks to this revolution that we know the internet as we do today. And now with blockchain, it's the same type of revolution that will develop services for the future in all types of possible fields: health, energy, the economy, banking. And Marieto, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/ CFF) in particular, we saw him get involved with Bitcoin.
I imagine you're following the phenomenon of when BCV ATMs will start delivering Bitcoin? So, it's true that Bitcoin is a technology that we are actively following, as Mr. Sibau said, it has been around since 2009. So, it's true that for us at Banque du Valet, it will need to be a little more democratized before you can load your electronic wallet from our ATMs, for example.
But it is certain that as soon as it can be used in a valet shop or in Switzerland, you will be able to load your Bitcoin wallet with a simple click or function from the Valet Bank's handsets or our mobile application. As a banking institution, do you view this technology in a rather positive light?
Yes, it's a no, we really see it in a positive light. In fact, Bitcoin itself, it's true that you won't come to the Banque Contonale du Valley tomorrow to open a Bitcoin account, that's for sure, but there is a whole technology behind it that is really advantageous for the bank. This would allow transactions to be made much faster, much more simply and much more securely.
So there is a big advantage even for banks. Laurent Sibau, while preparing for the interview, you were constantly talking about these new payment methods. Uh, what are the big advantages of this new way of doing things? It's about building trust, right? If I take the example of HTTP 96, our institutes were already here in Ser, there were a few dozen of us, and now we find ourselves 20 years later.
So, still using this same protocol, the internet was created. We now have over 600 jobs on the site in the fields of IT and digital technology with blockchain; it's the same revolution that is taking place. It's a new trusted third party. For example, we take the example of Airbnb, it represents 56% of the hotel supply in Valet.
The 15% margin that is taken from this , it still goes outside the canton, outside the country. With blockchain technology, we can do this kind of service internally without needing an intermediary. So it's a revolution in terms of service. Behind it we have digital technology, IT, that's our business, but we can develop services for the economy in the banking and energy sectors, and that's extremely interesting, it's about planning services for start-ups and spin-offs around this new technology in 5 years.
With all this technology, everything is digitized. Is there no way this system is truly reliable in terms of security? Yes, the blockchain is really secure so I won't go into detail about how it works because it's complicated, but in fact, instead of the information being in one place, it will be distributed all over the world in many places.
This means that in order to be attacked, you will have to attack all areas at the same time to attack something. In fact, you're doing the same thing as with your wallet. It's about someone coming onto your computer and stealing your electronic wallet, but it can happen on the street if you have your wallet stolen.
It's no riskier than using regular money, actually. So these new payment methods will of course revolutionize the way we consume and then pay. So before we continue, I'd like us to listen to an excerpt from a lecture by Christian Bachman. He is the director of the communication agency Destinatio, one of the first companies in the valley to work with Bitcoin, and he shares his impressions on the future of cash.
Ultimately, having cash in your hands is still important, especially for buying small things, but in the future, if we really think about the coming years, the next 20 years, it's going to be cashless even for the smallest things, and we're already seeing this on Micro where you can pay with services like Twint or Paymit, or Visa cards.
It's really becoming the trend now to pay with cash. Étienne Marieto, you share this opinion: the time of cash is over. Absolutely, I think that in Switzerland it will take a little longer because we are very attached to our money, but it is certain that even the Valletta group is working on these innovations.
We're going to come up with solutions where you can pay with your mobile phone in stores like Migros or really anywhere. There are countries that are already almost entirely cashless today and are further ahead than us. Quite. Sweden really has this desire to have no cash at all by 2020. They are already at 97% cashless transactions.
So they will succeed. Already a reality. Exactly. Laurent Sibau. Well, the Bitcoin market is still very volatile, you know. Its value can soar or fall. Despite everything, for you digital currency is clearly still the future. It's a matter of convenience, meaning there's no longer a need for an intermediary.
Until now, the intermediary for money has been paper. Now we all have our smartphones thanks to these protocols developed in research institutes such as ht, such as the Internet, such as the interfaces as we know them. And these digital currencies, it's the same thing, it's a question of convenience.
We approach the checkout, there is a transaction taking place in the world of the internet of things which is encrypted, which is secure and we no longer need this paper intermediary which takes up too much of our time and convenience, we are all a little lazy in life, well that is what will make the success of this application of digital currencies.
Is the disappearance of intermediaries a risk for banks? No, it's an advantage because for us too, sending money to the United States from Germany involves going through many intermediaries. The transaction will take longer, and for us too, it will incur additional costs. Therefore, banks also stand to gain from these elements.
There you go, gentlemen, thank you very much for shedding light on this complex subject which will clearly concern us all in a few years. I wish you a wonderful evening too, François. And for those who are interested and would like to delve deeper into the topic of blockchains, a major conference will be held at Technoarc on the subject. It will be on January 27th.
