So, we told you about this story a little earlier. If you haven't been with us before, the bottom line is that Elon Musk is promising to give every child in America a share of his company SpaceX. At SpaceX's current valuation, this is mainly about the stock. This unprecedented gift is valued at approximately $10.7 billion.
But what does this mean for children in the long term? Plus , there are still a ton of questions about logistics, eligibility, legal restrictions, and, you know, ulterior motives. So with us today is Phil Flynn, Senior Market Analyst at Price Futures Group. Phil, it's nice to see you. Thank you for being with us.
It's great to be here, and oh my god, this SpaceX news makes me want to be a kid again. I will tell you this for sure. I am delighted. Yeah, I mean, honestly, I think: okay. Do I meet the requirements? So, what do we know about this at the moment? So, it seems like there's a lot of uncertainty here right now.
Well, it's in the very early stages, but I think that's what's going to happen, and I'm very excited about it too. Because we often hear, "Oh, if we taxed millionaires and billionaires more, we could redistribute wealth." This would be one of the most effective ways to transfer some of Elon Musk's wealth to the general public and our future.
And what this really does, and I think this is very important, what we've been missing in this country, is increase financial literacy, you know? Because many people in this country, in the city of Chicago, don't know anything about the stock market. They are not aware of interest rates and how it affects them at the bank.
And it's a way for young people to start getting involved in stocks at an early age, like Trump's bills, where they gave every newborn baby a share of the stock market, because if you want to take part in the American dream, it's all about investing . And if you're going to pay for the American dream, you start investing now.
And so I think this is going to be a huge, wonderful thing for Americans. And I hope other countries and companies follow suit. I mean, I guess that's my question. Uh, so this is Elon Musk's company, and he's talking about giving away his own shares. But if you have all these stocks, um, help me out here, because economics is not my strong suit.
I have to be frank. Um, but could this have a significant impact on the company's valuation or investor sentiment towards it? Well, as a proud SpaceX shareholder, I'm glad the stock actually went up, right? It was a sign of confidence. And the way it's set up, because Elon Musk owns such a large stake in the company, it won't lead to any dilution of the stock.
This means my shares will still be worth the same, if not more. And if you think about it, SpaceX may be the most important company created in my lifetime, or maybe ever. Because when you think about the technologies they're dealing with— Starlink, space, possibly going to Mars in the future— it's going to affect every single person on this planet .
And it truly has the potential to become the most profitable company ever conceived by the human mind. So I think it's very generous that Elon Musk is allowing , you know, Americans to take advantage of what is really going to be the future. Artificial intelligence, space travel—things that I, you know, only dreamed about as a kid are going to become a reality, right?
And you know, one of the things that always bothers me is that when we talk about the poor and the middle class, the difference is that they never had the opportunity to invest and grow with the market. Yes, sometimes they get money from the government, and that's great . This helps them survive, but it does not help them accumulate wealth.
This will teach Americans how to accumulate wealth. You know, whether you're poor or rich, you have to save something for a rainy day. And if you're going to do it through SpaceX, that's going to be just amazing. But don't ask the kids to explain the cost estimate to me, because that might take a while .
OK. OK. Yes, and we don't have much time. But I'm curious. I mean, when we talk about getting people into the stock market, it seems like more and more people are getting involved. You have companies like that, let's say Robinhood, I was just giving an example. Um, where you could buy, say, a fractional share of a stock, you know, instead of a whole big stock.
Um, so this doesn't seem like the only way to get people into the stock market. No, that's not true. But it's almost like, you know, when you get a gift, instead of trying to figure out how to do it yourself, it motivates you a little bit, right? It's like, you know, when you got your first piano as a kid or your first guitar and then you became a rock star, right?
You know, that's the story. So when you get involved in it, you get that kind of experience, as opposed to just going somewhere by yourself. But no, I like the idea of Robinhood. And I like this idea because I think the more you encourage people to increase their personal wealth, the more it takes the pressure off the government, right?
And if we can, you know, if you look at what the stock market has done over the last, say, 50 or 100 years, you know, if the poor and the middle class had gotten involved in this to a greater extent, we wouldn't have such large deficits in Washington. You know, we wouldn't have to have all these programs.
So this is truly an empowering moment. I hope this is a sign of things to come . And I know that my nephews and nieces will be very happy, because they will be, you know, much wealthier than I was, well, at this age. Yes. Yeah, I mean, I definitely wasn't in the stock market when I was a little kid, that's for sure.
Yes. Um, I have to ask, after all, Elon Musk is a businessman, right? He is a businessman, he has been very successful in making a lot of money. So, in your opinion, what is Elon Musk's main goal in this? What does he gain from this ? You know, I hear so much criticism of Elon Musk because he's successful.
People seem to envy those who achieve success. Like, "Oh, he makes too much money. He doesn't deserve this money." I never believed that Elon Musk was doing this purely for the money. This man is a genius of our time. He is Alexander Graham Bell, he is the Edison of our time, isn't he ? I don't think he really cares about money.
Yes, he has accumulated a lot of money, but he is not doing it for the money. He's trying to guide us into the future and beyond, right? That's what SpaceX does, right? And you know, I mean, Elon Musk is not the kind of guy who accumulates property and sits around counting his money every day. I do this from time to time.
No, I don't. But in any case, my opinion is that money is not a motivation for Elon Musk. It is driven by technology, the future, and what lies ahead— the stars and the unknown. So, you know, so many people are focused on money. Listen, I think that over time, Elon Musk could become like Rockefeller or one of the greatest philanthropists in history.
But now he is busy trying to change the future and make the world a better place. Okay, Phil. Thank you for your opinion on this matter. It was nice to see you here this afternoon. Thank you . Thanks for the invite, and I'll have to talk to you about your retirement account later. Oh, I would be very happy.
I would be happy to talk about it. Okay, we will definitely invite you again. OK. See you later. OK. See you later. And we have to say that there is currently no official distribution plan or specific details on how this giveaway will work . But it's still in the headlines today, so we definitely wanted to discuss it.
Okay, it's 12:23 your time. You are up to date with events, more on that later .
